Burkvíz Ruin

Burkvíz, also known as Luginsland, is a medieval chateau ruin in the Czech Republic on Castle Hill in 654 m height. It is located between the village Burkvíz and the village Vraclávek, highlighting the strategic importance of chateaux for regional defence and politics in the Middle Ages. Despite ruins, Burkvíz remains an important historical monument protected as a cultural heritage.

The origin of Burkvíz is somewhat mysterious thanks to limited documented evidence of the date of its establishment. But archaeological research suggests that it existed at least from the mid-13th century during the colonization of Silesia. There was substantial development and territorial consolidation in the region at this time. The chateau probably served as a central center of local administration or defense, although it could have been built earlier. Historical sources mention a nearby fortress called Lugswalde around 1050, which guarded the northern Moravian border under Duke Břetslav I, which suggests a former strategic presence.

From an architectural point of view, Burkvíz consisted of two main components: kernels and seizures. The oval core measured approximately 60 to 44 meters and was surrounded by a rock-cut ditch, now partially filled with erosion. A stone wall without mortar created an outer wall around this area. The expansion northwest of the core was a horseshoe-shaped assembly, measuring 72 to 38 meters. Today, dense forests cover most of their historical order. The excavations between 1935 and 1940 revealed the foundations of the retracting wall within the framework of the construction, indicating robust medieval construction methods.

The ownership records for Burkvíz are thin until the end of the 15th century when Jiří Stoš z Kounic held it. In 1474, the Matyáš Korvín army besieged and captured the chateau, calling its end an active fortress without further efforts to restore.

Today, Burkvíz is an interesting place for interested people in medieval history and architecture. The remnants offer a tangible connection with the past, with visible traces of its core and seizure structures that provide a view of its original design and purpose. Although a large part of the site is overgrown, it remains accessible and offers picturesque views from its elevated position.
