The Chapel of the Guardian Angels in Pustkovec, Ostrava, stands as a testament to the region's rich religious history and cultural transformations. Originally built in 1882 on land donated by the local community, this Roman Catholic chapel was consecrated in 1926. Over time, it has undergone significant changes, including its transition to Orthodox use in 2003. Its historical significance is further highlighted by its proximity to the newly constructed Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built between 1997-1998.

The chapel's origins are rooted in a period when Roman Catholicism was prevalent in the region. Constructed as a single-nave structure, it served the local community until World War II, during which it sustained damage but was subsequently restored. In 1949, renowned Silesian artist Valentin Držkovics adorned its interior with paintings, though these did not survive due to dampness. The chapel's journey through history reflects broader religious and political shifts in post-communist Czechoslovakia.

Architecturally, the chapel began as a simple Roman Catholic structure. Despite suffering damage during World War II, it was restored and later expanded in 1975 after complex negotiations with church authorities. This renovation allowed it to better serve its community until the fall of communism facilitated the construction of a new church nearby, diminishing its relative importance.

Ownership of the chapel has seen dramatic changes over the years. Initially owned by the local community and managed by the Roman Catholic Church, it was transferred to the Orthodox Church in 2003 following an agreement that allowed for its use in Orthodox religious services. This transition underscores the chapel's adaptability and enduring relevance within the community.

Key events in the chapel's history include its initial construction in 1882, consecration in 1926, renovation and expansion in 1975, and its eventual transfer to Orthodox Church use in 2003. Despite these changes, the original altar and Držkovics' paintings did not survive due to dampness, marking a poignant reminder of the chapel's vulnerability over time.

Today, the Chapel of the Guardian Angels stands as a symbol of religious continuity and cultural adaptation. Located near the Pustkovec District Office in Ostrava, it remains accessible to visitors interested in its unique history. Its transition from Roman Catholic to Orthodox use highlights the dynamic nature of religious practice in the region. Visitors are invited to explore this historical monument, appreciating its architectural simplicity and the rich tapestry of stories it embodies.

The Chapel of Guardian Angels stands in Pustkovci, a district of Ostrava, not far from the municipal district office. Today it is also called the Orthodox chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels. However, its story began in the Roman Catholic Church.

The community donated the land for construction in 1882. A single-nave chapel was built on it, but it was consecrated only in 1926. By the end of the Second World War it had been damaged and subsequently repaired. In 1949, Valentin Držkovic, a renowned Silesian painter, decorated its interior with murals. His paintings did not survive due to moisture in the walls. The original altar also did not survive, and its author is unknown.

During the period of normalization, local believers wanted to build a new church, but the church secretary at the time would not allow it. Meanwhile, the chapel was becoming inadequate due to the number of believers. After complicated negotiations, the believers were allowed to at least repair the chapel and expand it with an extension. Several more years were spent clarifying property relations, so the reconstruction took place only in 1975.

The way to the church was only opened by the fall of the Communist Party after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius rose in Pustkovci in 1997 to 1998. The nearby chapel thereby lost its significance to a certain extent.

It gained a new role in 2003. On the basis of an agreement, the Roman Catholic Church then lent it for services to the Orthodox Church. In 2007, the chapel received an iconostasis and icons painted on wood. Since 2016, it has belonged to the Orthodox Church.
