The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located on the northwest edge of the village Cholina and is one of the protected cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. It serves as a parish church of the Roman Catholic parish and is a pilgrimage place that has attracted believers from the wider surroundings for centuries.

The construction shows four centuries of transformation. The original Gothic temple, originally dedicated to Saint Anne, had separate parts for Czech and German believers. The Renaissance reconstruction came in 1605, but the Thirty Years' War brought ruin - in 1643 the Swedish troops destroyed it. Restoration was gradual: only in 1661 did modest repairs occur. The decisive transformation was the present appearance that the temple acquired in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Mérotine builder Vincenc Vodička rebuilt it into a neo-gothic form with a slim tower. This reconstruction was completed by the reconsecration of the temple in 1867.

The interior of the church retains elements of the Gothic past - the main and transverse boat with presbytery. In the transverse boat there is a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph and St. Philomena, and at the entrance of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Vendelín. The centre of the temple is a neo-gothic altar of oak wood, decorated with statues of the Virgin Mary with Jesus (carried over in 1700) and four evangelists. The visitor will also notice the paintings of Saint Cyril and Methodius and the scene of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

The oldest tradition of the local temple is pilgrimage. Since 1637 there have been pilgrims dedicated to the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary Cholinska. The pilgrimage tradition has never been interrupted, which has left the church a place for more than 300 years where believers return.

Welcome to Choline and to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important cultural monuments of Central Moravia. You stand before the majestic temple, whose neo-gothic lines stand out in the local landscape and create a sense of spiritual calm and historical depth.

This church has a rich history. Originally there was a Gothic temple, which served as a place of prayer for all faith in the form of separate parts for Czech and German believers. In 1637 the pilgrimage to the miraculous statue of Our Lady Cholinska began, which shows the spiritual importance of this place since the early years. However, during the Thirty Years' War, namely in 1643, the Swedish troops devastated the church, a tragic moment in its history.

Now look up at the facade and see how architect Vincenc Vodička rebuilt the church in the second half of the 19th century into a neo-gothic form. Its design includes slim windows and distinctive lines that supply the temple with its present beauty. Note also the original Gothic character, which still resonates through the neo-gothic elements.

The key personality associated with this monument is of course Vincenc Vodička. His architectural work not only restored the church, but also strengthened his importance as a pilgrimage place and parish centre for the Roman Catholic community.

The interesting thing is that the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was dedicated to Saint Anne. This detail reminds us of its original function and spiritual importance to the population.

Let's move on to another aspect that makes this church unique. It is a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic and its history is closely linked to local traditions and pilgrimage to the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary Cholinská, which attracts visitors from around the world.

Let yourself explore another stunning interior and perceive the atmosphere of this place. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Cholina offers not only historical heritage but also an opportunity to deepen its spiritual path.
