Kostel svatého Mikuláše (Mladoňov) Church

Church of Saint Nicholas in Mladoňov is a Baroque building from 1740. Since 1964, the church complex together with the cross has been registered on the list of cultural monuments.

The church and rectory existed in the community already in the 14th century. Mladoňov is mentioned in a charter from 1350 concerning the establishment of the Litomyšl bishopric. The church at that time was dedicated to Mary Magdalene. In 1423 it was damaged by Hussites and in 1540 a collection was held at the request of the Olomouc vicariate for its repair.

The present Church of Saint Nicholas was built in 1740 at the expense of the local nobility, on a different site than the original one. It stands by the cemetery in gently sloping terrain in the middle of the village, beside the road. The entire complex is surrounded by a whitewashed boundary wall. In front of the entrance gate on the south side stands a sandstone cross from 1801.

The church is single-nave with a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular chancel. It is built of stone and brick and covered with smooth white lime plaster. The presbytery is narrower than the nave but equally high. The main façade transitions into a square tower with a clock, topped by an onion dome. The edges of the façade are decorated with sandstone balls with crosses. Above the presbytery, a small hexagonal turret rises from the roof, the so-called sanctus bell turret, also ending in an onion dome. From the northeast, a ground-floor sacristy adjoins the presbytery, and on the southeastern side there is an attached vestibule with a sandstone frame around the entrance.

Inside, the space under the tower is vaulted with a low vault decorated in the corners with plastic drops. A wooden staircase leads to the gallery, that is, to the music loft. The wall beneath its railing is decorated with stucco ornaments in the form of saddle cloths, which are the flowing covers that were placed under horse saddles. The space under the gallery is accessed through an open arcade. A small western space is lit by a window with a stained glass depicting Saint Nicholas.

The Stations of the Cross in the church were painted by Jan Dittmann. The painting of Saint Nicholas above the main altar was created in 1836 by František Leiter.

Between 2010 and 2015, the roof and timber frame of the church as well as the sacristy underwent complete renovation. The roof was covered with new slate tiles and the timber frame received protective treatment against insects and mold.
