Hrad Kostelec nad Labem is a partially preserved castle located in the town of Kostelec nad Labem, Mělník District. Established likely in the 13th century during King Přemysl Otakar II's reign, it served as a noble residence until the late 16th century. The remnants are preserved in house number 720 on K Rudči Street. Its significance lies in its association with Czech queens and nobility, including the lords of Dubé, who played roles during pivotal events like the Hussite Wars.

The origins trace back to when King Přemysl Otakar II expanded Czech influence across Europe. This era marked significant political and territorial consolidation for Bohemia within the Holy Roman Empire. The castle's establishment in the 13th century reflects this broader historical context of growth and power.

Architecturally, Hrad Kostelec nad Labem was fortified by water from a now-vanished branch of the Elbe River, highlighting its medieval defensive significance. The surviving northern wing features walls from its earliest phase, while interior cross-walls and barrel vaults in the ground floor date to a late Gothic renovation. These elements underscore the castle's historical architectural evolution.

Ownership has changed hands several times throughout history. Initially likely owned by King Přemysl Otakar II, it was held by Rudolf I of Saxony as a pawn in 1359. In 1371, Elizabeth of Pomerania had it in pawn and transferred it to Ales of Dubé in 1380. During the Hussite Wars, the castle was besieged by Jan Žižka in 1424. By 1432, it belonged to Bohumil of Klinštejn, then Jindřich Berka of Dubé. From 1499, it was owned by the Lords of Všehrd until purchased by Jan Vančura of Řehnice in 1572. In 1586, Emperor Rudolf II acquired it and integrated it with Brandýs nad Labem.

Key events include its siege by Hussite forces led by Jan Žižka during the Hussite Wars. This event highlights the castle's strategic importance and involvement in significant historical conflicts. The integration of the castle with Brandýs nad Labem by Emperor Rudolf II in 1586 marks another pivotal moment in its history.

Today, Hrad Kostelec nad Labem is incorporated into a residential building, preserving its historical essence. Visitors can explore the remnants of this once-grand structure and reflect on its storied past. The castle's strategic location near the Elbe River continues to highlight its medieval defensive significance. Its preservation within modern architecture offers a unique glimpse into Czech history.

Hrad Kostelec nad Labem stands as a testament to the rich historical tapestry of the region, offering insights into the lives and times of Bohemian nobility. It is a site worth visiting for those interested in exploring the layers of history embedded within its walls.

The castle in Kostelec nad Labem in the Mělník region is today partially ruined. Its remains are hidden in the masonry of house number 720 on K Rudči street. At first glance, it is not a castle, but a residential house that contains a much older structure.

The castle was built most likely in the second half of the thirteenth century, during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar the Second. The first written mention of it, however, dates from 1359. At that time, it was held as a pledge by Saxon Prince Rudolf the First. In 1371, Queen Alžběta Pomořanská held the castle in pledge, and in 1380 she transferred it to Aleš of Dubé.

At the beginning of the Hussite Wars, the castle belonged to Aleš's son. In 1420, the Hussites besieged and captured it. Four years later, Jan Žižka himself was besieged in Kostelec.

In 1432, the town and castle belonged to Bohumil of Klinštejn, and after him it was acquired by Jindřich Berka of Dubé. In the second half of the fifteenth century, a number of owners succeeded one another here. From 1499, the castle was held by the Nobility of Všehrd. Jan Vančura of Řehnic bought it from them, and it belonged to his descendants until 1572. During this time, the castle underwent Renaissance reconstruction.

In 1586, Emperor Rudolf the Second redeemed Kostelec from the pledge and attached it to Brandýs nad Labem. This ended the castle's role as a manorial seat. It continued to serve only economic purposes.

The castle was originally protected by water from a vanished branch of the Elbe. From it, the northern wing of the castle core with a rounded corner has been preserved. The northern and southern walls of today's house date from the oldest building phase. The interior partitions and barrel vaults on the ground floor are younger and were created during the late Gothic reconstruction.
