The fortress Líšnice is a medieval fortress from the first half of the 14th century, situated on a rock edge above the valley of the river Líšník in the district of Šumperk. This protected cultural monument was used to protect the strategic trade route and is today an important archaeological site.

The building was built by páni z Kunštátu. Although the first written mention dates back to 1353, archaeological findings suggest that the creation of the building can be dated back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its main purpose was to control and protect the trade route connecting Olomouc, Moravian Trebova and Svitavy.

The original core of the fort had dimensions of approximately 37 × 32 metres and was surrounded by a circular wall of quarry stone. The fortification was made up of two deep ditches with walls. The outside had a width of 13 to 16 meters and a depth of four meters, while the inner was 15 to 17 meters wide and six meters deep. The outside wall was up to 2.5 metres high. Between the two trenches there was probably an elongated front with a width of 12,5 to 19 metres.

The fort was owned by páni z Kunštátu. It was conquered three times between 1417 and 1436. Its final destruction occurred in 1436 after the raid of the Moravian Margrave Albrecht, after which it was not renewed. The last written mention of 1494 mentions the object as desolate.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the monument suffered further devastation. Some parts of the buildings were dismantled and used as building material. Moreover, part of the building destroyed the mining of the stone in the quarry, which interfered directly with the fortress area.

Today the site is wooded by mixed vegetation. There is no marked tourist path to the fort. Access is possible from the village Líšnice along the local road towards the Old Mill, then turning right around the stream to the quarry and then after the pavement.

The fortress Líšnice is a valuable witness to medieval fortifications and strategic planning in the region. Visiting this quiet place allows the terrain to observe the remains of a once important defense system.

Hello and welcome to the historical monument of the fortress Líšnice! You are standing right in front of the fascinating rest of the medieval fortress, which boasts a view over the valley of the Líšník stream. Its position on the rocky edge gives the place a unique atmosphere and a memory of the past.

The fortress was built probably in the first half of the 14th century when páni z Kunštátu needed to protect the strategic trade route between Olomouc and Moravian Trebova. In 1353, it mentioned for the first time in writing, indicating its importance for the region.

Look around you: you see parts of the core of the fortress and the circular wall. These elements are the remnants of the original fortification, which was built to prevent access to the enemy. The original core had dimensions of 37 × 32 meters and was surrounded by a wall of quarry stone. This material added not only strength but also aesthetic character to the fortress.

The strength of Líšnice is also significant thanks to the personalities associated with its destiny. In 1436 it was destroyed after the raid of the Moravian Margrave Albrecht, indicating the political instability of the time. The last written mention of the fort appeared in 1494 when it was referred to as desolate.

The interesting thing is that despite its disappearance and decay, it still radiates an historic atmosphere. The fortress Líšnice serves as a monument to the past and allows us to imagine life in this fortress.

As long as you're here, look around and let your sense of history take over your spirit. The fortress Líšnice is a great place to look back and commemorate the rich history of this area.

Thank you for your visit, I hope you enjoyed it. If you have further questions or want to explore more regions, we will be happy to guide you through other attractions!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is the late spring season or autumn when nature is the most colorful and weather most stable for walks in the wooded area.

Since you are on a rocky edge and there is a quarry nearby, we recommend that you take with you fixed shoes, plenty of water and possibly repellent for protection against insects.

For lovers of photography are the best moments of sunrise or sunset when light hits rock formations and ruins of the creature, creating interesting shadows and atmosphere.

Families with children can use the surroundings to walk in the valley of the Líšník river or to discover rocky terrain, but care must be taken for the uneven surface.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the ruins of hardships in Líšnice wake up with nature. The light is fine and scattered in this period, which highlights the texture of the old stone. The first flowers begin to bloom around the chateau, and the young leaves provide a fresh green colour for the place. It is ideal to choose the morning hours when the air is the cleanest. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning cold can be overlooked, but the afternoon sun can already warm.

Summer months bring intense sunshine and warm atmosphere to the hazel hardness. The bright vegetation around the ruins is in full bloom and creates a rich contrast with grey walls. Due to the high temperatures and possible increased interest of visitors, we recommend that you come immediately after opening to avoid the greatest heat and crowd. Don't forget enough drinking water, headgear and solid footwear that is necessary to move on uneven terrain between the stones.

Autumn visit offers a melancholy and mysterious atmosphere that is perfect for ruins. The morning fog surrounding the ruins creates a magical picture and the golden colors of the leaves around the hardness give the place a nostalgic touch. In this period it is best to visit the memory in the afternoon when light breaks at a low angle. Prepare for changing weather, so you must carry a waterproof jacket and shoes with good moisture protection.

Zimą acts as a desolate and silent reminder of the past. Without leaves, the ruins are clearly visible against the grey sky and frost can create interesting patterns on the stone ruins. The atmosphere is calm and lonely, which the lovers of silence appreciate. Due to shorter daily times and lower temperatures it is necessary to plan a visit around noon and choose very warm, wind-resistant clothes. Also watch out for possible snow or ice on the trail leading to the monument.
