The Elbe department store located in the centre of Ústí nad Labem on Revolutionary Street is an important monument to neo-expressionist architecture from the 1970s. Built according to the design of the architect Rozena Šrátová and opened in 1974, this building boasts one of the first escalators of Czechoslovak production. His facade with aluminum cloak was designed to evoke the color of the Elbe. The department store is not only an architectural monument, but also a witness of historical changes in the urban area of Ústí nad Labem.

It originated in a place destroyed during the air strikes at the end of World War II. The construction began in 1967 and ended in 1974 when the building was opened to the public. The parcel lay between the bus and train station Ústí nad Labem. At that time Czechoslovakia was going through a socialist era, which also affected urban projects like this department store. Consumer cooperative Unit invested in the construction and after 1995 ownership moved to the company 7th commercial, a.s.

Architectural is built in neoexpressionist style. The building has a rectangular plan with two pairs of towers in opposite corners which contain staircases and technology. The characteristic feature is the facade with aluminum casing, originally silver tone, now dark grey. The original slate tile was replaced with a white plaster. Interiors were designed by Mojmir Böhm, Ladislav Špád and Antonín Werner.

In 1974, the building was opened to the public and has since become an important part of the urban picture. In 2010, the owner considered removing the Elbe sculpture, which was part of the urban solution of the intersection in front of the house. The sculpture created by sculptor Karel Kronych remained unpreserved until 2020, when a plan for reconstruction and conversion into a fountain appeared. At the beginning of 2020, obchodní dům Labe was listed in the proposal for inclusion in the monument protection.

Today it is not only an architectural monument, but also a place with rich history and cultural significance. Its neoexpressionist style and unique facade make it a significant part of the urban panorama Ústí nad Labem. It is important for visitors not only to appreciate architectural details, but also to understand the historical context and changes that the department store experienced during its existence.

It stands as a witness to the changing Czech urban space and is an important reminder of 20th century history and architecture. It would be a recognition of its importance not only for the town of Ústí nad Labem, but also for the whole Czech culture. Visiting this department store offers an opportunity to appreciate the rich history and architectural creations of the past.

Welcome, you are facing a unique construction piece that dominates the central part of Ústí nad Labem. In front of you, there is a massive facade on Revolutionary Street, its surface shines under the sunlight and reminds of the color of the flowing Elbe, on which the city bears its name. The first look at this object will interest you in its massive volume and clean lines, which are based on the architectural direction, which in the 1970s began to promote itself as a significant response to previous modernist tendencies. The air around you carries the light noise of urban transport, but at the same time you feel the calm that comes from a carefully thought-out space that was created with regard to the public and aesthetics.

Let's move on to the time this building was born. The Elbe department store was opened in 1974, i.e. in the period when Czechoslovakia was undergoing intense changes in public space and in the architectural concept of cities. The proposal falls on the manuscript of architect Rozena Jránová, who at that time was among the leading representatives of the new architectural direction, called the neo-expressionist architecture. This direction has tried to connect functionality with strong forms to induce emotional response. The construction was built in a place that suffered heavy bombardment during World War II and was completely destroyed. After the war, the city decided to use this open space to create a new public centre that would not only replace the lost buildings, but also symbolize recovery and progress.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. The facade of the department store is covered with an aluminum cloak, whose surface captures light and changes its shades according to the time of day, thus reminiscent of the variability of the Elbe River. This material was considered modern and technologically advanced at the time, which underlines the innovative nature of the construction. Over the entire height of the building is a straight line that highlights the horizontal dimension while creating a sense of stability. There is one of the first escalators of Czechoslovak production at the level of the entrance space - a technical solution which at that time represented great progress in public transport infrastructure. If you look down, you can imagine people moving up these moving stairs over the past decades, moving quickly and comfortably between the floors of the department store. The whole object is designed to act as an open and welcoming space where urban life meets modern technologies.

Among the key stories related to this place are the personality of Rozena Jortová, whose design was not only an architectural output, but also an expression of her belief in how urban spaces should serve people. Joke focused on creating a place where business activity will be mixed with public meetings and where each visit will be accompanied by an aesthetic experience. Another important moment in the history of the house is its opening in 1974, when the first lights were lit in front of hundreds of people and the public could enter a new space for the first time, which promised comfort and modern service. Although the tenants and offer of shops have changed over the years, the structure itself has been preserved and continues to serve as an important hub of urban life.

The interesting thing that can impress a visitor is that obchodní dům Labe is one of the first buildings where home escalator was used. At a time when most of such facilities were imported from abroad, Czechoslovak engineers managed to produce a reliable and functional model that was installed here. This technical success was seen as a symbol of national industrial power and an indication that the country can produce high-end technologies even in the area of public space. Another stimulating issue that often occurs in connection with this house is what was the original intention of the architect regarding the colour design of the facade. Although today we see the aluminum coat as a reflection of the color of the river, the original documents suggest that Jortová wanted the surface to change during different seasons to reflect the variability of nature around the city. This plan adds another layer of importance to the building and connects it to the surrounding environment.

Finally, I invite you to move on and explore everything obchodní dům Labe has to offer. Enter the main space, walk along the windows, listen to the noise of people and discover how the modern business concept intersects with historical context. Every step you take will allow you to look into the period when Czechoslovakia was trying to strike a balance between tradition and innovation. I hope that this moment will not only provide you with information, but also a sense of connection to the city, its history and the vision that Růžena Žertová has placed in this place. Thank you for taking the time to listen to this guide, and I wish you a pleasant discovery of further corners of Ústí nad Labem.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in the centre of Ústí nad Labem brings to the surroundings of the Elbe department store a gradual awakening of nature and a soft, longer light that highlights architectural details of the historical building. The atmosphere is quieter than it is in the summer months, and the sidewalks are less crowded, allowing for a more peaceful tour of the facade and surrounding streets. This period is ideal for visitors to observe changing shading on plaster and to walk along the river where the first flowers flourish. Practical advice includes layered clothing because spring weather is usually variable and temperatures may vary significantly during the day. The best time to visit is in the morning, when visibility is best and the crowds are still sparse, which makes it easier to take pictures and orientation in the historical core of the city without undue delay.

Summer brings to the surroundings intense sun and long days that create sharp shadows and highlight the texture of the stone and bricks of the department store. The atmosphere is more lively and the streets are full of people, which gives the place dynamism, but it can also be disturbing. A clear blue sky is specific, which contrasts with historical architecture and makes the building a significant point on the panorama. Practical advice focuses on the protection of the sun, i.e. the hat and sunglasses, and the choice of time of visit. It is recommended to come either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the top heat and the largest crowds of tourists and locals. Water is necessary in the summer, which is why it is always good to have it at hand while walking around the centre.

Autumn in Ústí nad Labem offers warm, golden tones of lighting that match the colours of leaves in nearby parks and squares. The atmosphere is more melancholy and peaceful, with a feeling of heat inside buildings and cold outdoors, which creates a pleasant contrast. A soft diffuse light is specific, which softens the hard line of architecture and gives the historic home of the Elbe a romantic touch. Practical advice includes clothes with wind protection because autumn wind can be unpleasant, as well as shoes with good heel for possible wet leaves and slippery sidewalks. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun rises at a low angle and creates dramatic shadows that are ideal for photographic images.

Winter in the city centre brings short days and dark skies, which contrasts with artificial lighting of the department store and surrounding streets. The atmosphere is cold and often cloudy, which underlines the historical nature of the building and creates a sense of comfort when viewed from the outside. Specific is a white or grey climate that can highlight architectural elements and details of the facade, especially if there is snow. Practical advice focuses on warm clothing, including gloves and scarves, and on caution on slippery sidewalks. The best time to visit is the late afternoon when evening lighting is switched on and the boudoba gets a different night character. It is important to have a fully charged mobile phone for navigation and communication, because winter can affect return planning by shortening the day.
