Dolní Lutyně is a municipality in the Karviná District, in historical Cieszyn Silesia. It lies in the lowland of the Olše River east of Bohumín and borders Poland to the north. It consists of Dolní Lutyně and Věřňovice, which merged in 1975. It was first recorded around 1305 as Luthina. Until 1946 it was called Německá Lutyně (German Lutyně), to distinguish it from neighbouring Polská Lutyně. In the 18th century it belonged to the Irish Taaffe family: Nicholas Taaffe had the Baroque Church of St John the Baptist built in 1740–1746, and a statue of St Patrick stands beside it. The village has a mainly agricultural character. Near Věřňovice there are two natural monuments in the Olše floodplain, and the surroundings are part of a bird area. More than 5,300 people live here.
