Popravčí kříž in Jáchymov in Karlovy Vary is a Baroque monument from 1731. Originally served as a place of last prayer sentenced to death. Today he stands before the Royal Mint and is also known as God's torment. The monument bears witness to the urban execution site and religious practice of the 18th century.

The memorial was created in 1731 under the Habsburg administration. It characterized the Baroque style, the development of religious influence and centralization of power. These trends reflected in the form and purpose of the whole building.

The monument is made of granite Tuscan pole on granite stage. On top of it is a sandstone chapel in the shape of a prism tabernacle with a tent roof, closed by a cross. On the front side of the pedestal is the year 1731 and Christ's sign IHS. The chapel is decorated with reliefs: the front side shows the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John, the left escape of the Holy Family to Egypt, the right hand of the Virgin Mary with Jesus and the back of the Lord's introduction to the temple.

The development of infrastructure has led to several relocations of the monument. Originally he stood on the Sibenice Hill, where there was a city execution site. At the end of the 18th century it was moved to the lower part of the city to the Panský mlýn, at the bridge via Veseřice. Later placed on the left side of the new imperial road from Ostrov to Jáchymova. The last change took place in the second half of the 20th century in the construction of today's road; That's when the memorial got its present place outside the Royal Mint.

The object originally served as so-called Popravčí kříž. Before the execution of the death penalty itself, the condemned were last prayed here.

Today the monument is accessible in the center of Jáchymova. It combines religious art and the history of urban justice.

Popravčí kříž is a valuable memento that resembles ancient customs and urban development of the city. Visiting this place is recommended for anyone looking for traces of history in Jáchymov.

Welcome to Jáchymov, a place where history has deeply carved into the landscape and into the stones themselves. Stop now and focus fully on what you see right in front of you. You are standing in front of a monument that bears the name Popravčí kříž, even though we often refer to it as God's Torture in folk language. At first glance, it may appear to you as a quiet, inconspicuous element of the urban landscape, but if you look at it more carefully, you will find that this monument holds very hard and deep stories from the past. Feel his presence and the atmosphere of this place, where today he stands outside the Royal Mint building, but where there once was a completely different, much rougher tension.

Let us now return together in time many centuries back, up to the year of tyre seven hundred thirty one. It was this year that this Baroque monument was created. But at that time, he wasn't standing here where you are. His original home was Gallows Hill. Imagine this place in the eighteenth century. The gallows hill was not a place for walking, but a place of ruin and the last seconds of human life. It was here that the cross was placed to serve as a place of last prayer for the most innocent and the most guilty, for all the condemned to death. It was the last point of hope, the last spiritual refuge where a man in deep sadness and fear could seek a cliff with God before he carried out his last punishment. It is a freezing notion that this stone has sucked in the pain and silence of many people who have parted with it with their earthly life.

Now, please pay attention to the very form of the monument. Look at the structure. You will see that the monument stands on a solid granite pole, which is produced in Tuscan style. The Granite is a hard and durable stone, which symbolizes the stability and invulnerability of fate. Notice how this column carries its superstructure. At the top of the column there is a chapel made of sandstone. Sandstone is a much finer material than granite, which allows more detailed processing. Take a closer look at the reliefs, the carved paintings in the stone that decorate the chapel. You can see here the representation of the Crucifixion, which directly refers to suffering and sacrifice, and also the depiction of the Holy Family, which in this harsh context brings a sense of humanity, love and hope. These images should have been a reminder to the condemned that even in the greatest suffering, there was a way of redemption.

When you look down at the pedestal itself, notice the small but important details. There are seven hundred thirty-one years here, confirming the age of this witness in history. Next to the year you will also see the letters Kr. Although the exact name of the author or the specific personality that was worth creating the monument remains in oblivion, this short mark is one of the few tracks that we have left from the time of its creation. It's fascinating how so little detail can link today's visitor to the craftsman who carved this stone almost three years ago.

But this monument did not live in just one place. His journey through the city is basically a map of the changes Jáchymov was going through. As I mentioned before, he started on the Sibenice Hill. But then came the end of the eighteenth century and the memorial was moved to the lower part of the city, the neighbourhood of the Pansky Mill. Here he was still fulfilling his role as a place of prayer and respect. But time went on and in the nineteenth century Jáchymov was changing, new roads were being built and the city was developing. At that time the cross was moved again, this time to the left of the new imperial road that led from Ostrov. Imagine this stone traveling with the city, watching changes in traffic, architecture, and people's minds. Until finally, in the second half of the twentieth century, Popravčí kříž was moved to its current location, where it is now standing before the Royal Mint.

Here we come to one interesting thing, which can give us some thought. It's the contrast between the original purpose of the memorial and its current surroundings. Today, there is a cross in front of a building that was a symbol of power, money and government, that is, the coin house. But originally he stood where the law ended and the sentence began. This movement from the place of execution and death to the place of wealth and power is very symbolic in itself. It reminds us that life is variable and that even the darkest memories can be incorporated in the normal rhythm of the city in time, where people today just walk around and admire the beauty of baroque art without realizing how many tears and prayers this stone once accompanied.

When you look at the monument now, try to perceive the quiet dialogue between hard granite and fragile sandstone. It is a dialogue between relentless punishment and a fragile hope of salvation. Popravčí kříž is not just a piece of worked stone, it is a monument to human destiny. It is a reminder of a time when justice was carried out very strictly and publicly and when faith was the only support in the last moments of life.

Now that you have learned about the path of this monument and its profound importance, I suggest you stay with it for a while. Try to imagine what sounds accompanied this cross on the Sibenice Hill and what sounds accompany it today in the centre of Jáchymova. The difference in the atmosphere is what makes history so fascinating.

Thank you for accompanying me at this brief stop at the Executioner's Cross. I hope this insight into the past has helped you better understand the spirit of this city. Now invited to further explore Jáchymova. Go through the surrounding alleys, see the architecture, and look for other clues that people left before us. I wish you a pleasant continuation in your discovery and farewell.
