Rozhledna a televizní vysílač Praděd is the highest solid artificial point in the Czech Republic, located at the top of Hrubý Jeseník in the Moravian-Silesian Region. This building, situated in the Silesian cadastral area of Malá Morávka, reaches an altitude between 1,637 and 1,638 metres, thus exceeding the peak of the highest Czech mountain of Snow.

The history of the building in this place dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when there was a hut and later a simple building. The first preserved building records dates back to 1891. In 1903, the Moravian-Silesian Sudeten Mountain Association in Frývaldov presented plans of architect František von Neumann and after approval the construction was allowed in August of the same year. In 1904 the construction of the original observation tower started, which was named the Watchtower Habsburg. Material from nearby Boards rocks was used for its construction. The tower was completed and collapsed in 1912.

The original stone building resembled a Gothic castle tower and was 32.5 metres tall. Its service life was shortened by inappropriate building material that was crumbling in moisture and lack of maintenance during the First World War. During World War II, the Germans used the tower for meteorological purposes and aerial observation. At that time, it was called the Adolf Hitler Tower and was supplemented by a tourist post cabin built by prisoners of war and total commitment. After the war, no new operator was found, so the lookout tower closed to the public in 1946. Although it was taken over by the Tourist Association Prague in 1951, the construction was abandoned due to vandalism and weather effects. For security reasons, it was closed again in 1957 and the whole tower collapsed on 2 May 1959.

The current transmitter was designed by architect Jan Liška from the Brno Building Project. The construction began in 1968 to cover the growing demand for television broadcasting. Due to the difficult construction conditions, the completion date has moved from 1977 to 1980. A asphalt road from nearby Ovčárny was set up to supply the premises.

The object combines concrete base, steel tube and laminate antenna attachment. The total height of the construction is 146,5 metres, which is the figure after the replacement of the antenna adapter in 1993. The transmitter is the fifth highest tower in the Czech Republic. In addition to broadcasting technology, there is a restaurant, hotel and view. At a height of 73 metres, there is a public observation platform from which in good weather you can see Snow, Lysa mountain, Radhosti and rarely the High Tatras or Little Fatra in Slovakia. The highest available platform is located 20 metres below the peak, while the antenna attachment itself can only be reached when the transmitter is stopped.

Originally planned special equipment of the restaurant interior, as with the Jested transmitter, but due to savings this realization did not take place. The work of art in the form of wooden sculpture The Drop was moved to the meeting room of the Czech Radiokomunitions due to fire safety.

This technical object represents a unique connection between the broadcasting infrastructure and the tourist centre. It is a place that thanks to its location and height offers visitors extraordinary views of the surrounding mountains.

Welcome to the top of Granddad. You are standing in a place that will immediately amaze you with your height, your strength and your fearless presence in this harsh mountain environment. Look around you, and then look back at the monumental structure that is standing above you that almost seems to be touching the clouds themselves. This structure is not just an ordinary tower. It is the highest solid artificial point in the Czech Republic. Do you feel the incredible power of this place? Do you feel the human inventiveness here colliding with the unrestrained power of the mountains? This building dominates the whole area and serves as a beacon for all who go to these heights. It's a symbol of technical progress and a place that carries deep traces of history.

In order to understand what you're seeing in front of you right now, we need to take time together. The history of this peak is not just a story about construction, but a story about endurance and a constant search for ways to stay in these extreme conditions. It all started in 1904. That's when the first lookout tower, which was known as the Habsburg Watchtower, was built here. Imagine the era when the first tourists came out here with respect for nature and when this important point was being built here. This original tower was stone and after years of work it was completed and officially renovated in 1912. It was a solid, traditional building that had its own dignity and that watched the surrounding countryside for many years.

But history has its dark and unexpected moments. Something happened in 1959, which probably shocked the visitors and residents of the area at that time. The whole original stone tower collapsed. For security reasons that had to be absolutely crucial at the time, this historical monument simply collapsed. It left nothing but an empty rock and a memory of what once stood here. But the human spirit will not be stopped. The ruins of the old world began to build a new era, an era of modern technology and fearless progress.

Now pay attention to what you're seeing right now. This current construction before you was completed in 1980. It is a work that is the result of precise planning and deep understanding of the difficult conditions that this summit must face. Notice the unique and fascinating design. It's not just an ordinary pillar. It is a masterful combination of various materials that must work together to withstand strong wind, frost and constant pressure changes. Look at the foundation - it is made of solid concrete, which provides the necessary stability and a solid basis for everything that stands over it. The steel tube provides the necessary height and strength for the entire construction. And finally, at the top, you'll see a laminate attachment. This combination of concrete, steel and laminate is absolutely unique and it is thanks to it that this object can fulfil its double and very important role.

The architect Jan Liška is behind this proposal. His vision was to create an object that would not only be a cold technical device, but a place that would serve the people. And that's what happened. This building is much more than just a transmitter. It's a major transmission hub that distributes signals to the wide area, but it's also a tourist center. This building combines the world of invisible electromagnetic waves with the tangible world of human rest. You can find a hotel and restaurant here, which makes this place an ideal destination for anyone who is looking not only for views, but also for a moment of peace along a difficult mountain path.

However, if we look even further into the details, we will find that this building is not entirely immutable today. Even in modern times, she goes through transformations to continue to perform her tasks. One of the important changes took place in 1993 - the antenna part was replaced at the time and thus the height of the whole building was slightly adjusted. This reminds us that Pradad is a living place that must constantly adapt to the new technologies and needs of the world, which is constantly changing under it.

Imagine the incredible work that had to be done to make this object stand so high above the perimeter. Every element, from the concrete base to the highest laminate piece, must be in perfect balance. It's a fascinating view of how human intelligence can connect with uncompromising nature.

But now I don't have to keep you in this silly tone. You have an incredible opportunity ahead of you. I invite you to move on and explore this place with all your senses. Take a look at the detailed work in the construction, see the atmosphere of this peak and let yourself be absorbed by the endless horizon that opens up here. Perhaps you will have a cup of hot drinks in the restaurant or enjoy a rest at the hotel to watch the clouds roll around this monumental tower. Enjoy every moment spent at this highest point in our country. Thank you for joining us on this short journey through history and architecture. See you at the top of the great-grandfather.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is most pronounced and the traffic is less dense. Due to altitude, weather changes very quickly, so we recommend monitoring the current forecast.

The way to the top can be difficult, get ready to climb.

Don't forget to bring enough drinking water and especially warm and waterproof clothes, even if it's summer in the valley. Fixed footwear with anti-slip sole is necessary for safe movement in the field.

For the best photos we recommend looking for sightseeing places around the transmitter during the golden hour. Panoramic images of the surrounding mountains are the most prominent here.

With the children, we recommend using the lighter paths within the Hrubý Jeseník or visit Little Morávka. There are also other significant peaks such as Snow, Lysa Mountain or Radhosti.
