Sloup se sousoším Kalvárie in the village Zelenecká Lhota in the district of Jičín is a sandstone late Baroque monument from 1772. It is located in the centre of the village near passable communication and represents a typical example of religious art in the late 18th century.

The monument was built in 1772, which corresponds to the period of late Baroque in Czech countries. At this time, many similar religious columns and calvariums appeared in the landscape, while in a wider European context, the ideas of enlightenment gradually gained influence.

The whole object is made of sandstone. The construction is situated on a sandstone stage with a quarted plinth on which there is a slightly conical base with volute wings at the bottom. The front side of the pedestal is decorated with the relief of Saint Izidor, the patron saint of farmers, which is shown in a short unbuttoned coat with a spade in the left hand and the right hand on the chest. The base ends with a massive corrugated ledge on which is mounted metal lantern with matte glass.

Three main figures are placed on the ledge. In the centre there is a stone crucifix on a small plinth with a clover's end and a nudity of naked Christ in a loincloth with a head bent towards the right shoulder. On the left of the cross is a statue of the Virgin Mary of the Painful and on the right a statue of St. John the Evangelist.

In more recent history, the memorial recorded a negative event in 2017, when an attempt was made to steal the statue of the Virgin Mary, in which the statue was broken. Subsequently, in 2019, the damaged part was restored.

The monument stands in the centre of the village Zelenecká Lhota in front of the house No. 15 by the road leading from the Old Castles to the Mrkvojda. It is freely accessible and serves as an important element of local sacral architecture.

This monument represents valuable evidence of baroque spirituality in the landscape. It is advisable to visit it when passing through the region of Jicin.

Welcome to Zelenecká Lhota. You just stopped in front of one of the most important and beautiful symbols of this place. You are standing right in front of the sandstone sculpture of Calvary, which acts as the silent guardian of the entire village. While life can flow around you and people can travel through close communication, this monument carries the peace and depth of the past. Look at him as a whole, the weight of the stone that has stood here for over two centuries. Feel the atmosphere as the light reflects off its surface and how this sandstone pure material changes slightly depending on how strong today's sun is. This monument is not just a piece of stone, it's a story told through shapes and symbols.

Now let's go back in time to understand why this object is even standing here. This sandstone monument was created in 1772. This was the time when religious faith and art were closely linked and people wanted to express their commitment to such lasting and noble shapes. This is a work of late Baroque style, which means that in its lines you can feel certain dynamics, movement and emotions that are characteristic of this era. In the context of the end of the eighteenth century, such a sculpture served as a place of prayer, as a stop point for bystanders and as a reminder of spiritual values for the whole community. Although we do not know the names of the particular artists who have worked this stone, their championships are evident in every detail you will see now.

Now pay attention to the construction itself and how it is assembled. Your eyes should start at the ground and move upwards. The whole object stands on a solid, block-shaped plinth that gives it stability and a sense of unshakefulness. Above this base is a conical base whose shape is gradually narrowed and leads the view above. Notice how this base is processed. It's not just a simple support for statues, it's part of the whole artistic expression. On this pedestal you can see a very important element, the relief of St. Izidor. Saint Izidor is the patron saint of farmers, which is of profound importance to this village. Imagine all those generations of people who worked here in the fields and who turned to this monument in the time of harvest or in the time of straits. This relief is the link between the celestial and earthly life of the villagers.

Now, if you raise your sight even higher, you'll find a curly ledge. This curve is not random; It is the ripple that gives the whole sculpture the typical baroque feel where the lines seem to be in constant movement. The most important statues are then placed on this ledge. The main center is crucifix with the figure of Christ. Next to him, in the vicinity, you will see the statue of Our Lady of Pain and the statue of St. John the Evangelist. This group of characters forms the heart of the whole sculpture. It's a scene full of emotions to make a visitor think about humanity and patience. Watch how these characters are distributed, how they communicate with each other with their attitude, even if they are carved out of solid sandstone.

Even such a beautiful and noble monument had to face the dark sides of human nature. You may not realize this, but this object has been through a difficult time. In 2017, this historical monument became the target of a relentless act. There was an attempt to steal and then damage the statue of the Virgin Mary. It was a moment when it seemed that part of this history could be irreparably lost. However, people have decided not to give up this work. Thanks to the efforts to save it and the subsequent restoration that took place in 2019, the statue returned to its original, dignified state. This story about damage and the subsequent corrective process is proof of how much people value their heritage and how important this monument is to the local community.

Looking at this monument, you can realize how fragile history is, even if it's engraved in stone. This sandstone that you see is solid, but still subject to time and human actions. Even though he's standing by a passageway where people keep moving, he can keep his sacred and silent presence. It's a fascinating contrast between the constant movement of the world and the static force of this sculpture.

I hope this view of Calvary has brought you more than just the perception of an old stone. I hope you have also seen human stories, the efforts of craftsmen from the last century and the efforts of modern people to preserve beauty. Ask your eyes to stay with the details of reliefs and statues for a while longer before you go on your next journey. Zelenecká Lhota has many other secrets and beauty waiting for you. I wish you a nice and peaceful walk through the rest of the village. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the monument surrounds the waking green and fresh air. Soft spring light gently decorates the details of the sculpture and creates a sense of renewal. We recommend wearing more layers of clothing because the weather is very variable in this period. The best time to visit is in the morning, when nature is the most lively.

In the summer months the object acts in contrast to the dense shadow of the surrounding trees and bright sun. The atmosphere is hot and full of life. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and not forget the headgear. To avoid the greatest heat, it is best to arrive early in the morning or shortly before sunset.

Autumn brings the golden colour of leaves and frequent mists to the surroundings that give the place a mysterious and melancholy touch. Light is golden and low in this period, which is ideal for viewing the shape of the monument. Moisture-resistant shoes and a warm jacket are practical. For the best visual impression we recommend a visit in the afternoon.

In winter the white colour of snow is excellent, which highlights the contours of the stone pillar. There is silence and the freezing purity of the air, which seems very brave. It is necessary to wear warm thermal underwear, gloves and a hat. We recommend that we leave in broad daylight, so that all details can be seen.
