Židovský hřbitov v Turnově is the only preserved Jewish cemetery in Semily County and a unique monument to the Liberec Region. It is located in Sobotecká Street, about 600 meters southwest of the square of the Czech Paradise, and is situated on an area of 2179 square meters. Its importance lies mainly in a well-preserved collection of about five hundred fifty tombstones which document the history of the local Jewish community from the 17th century to 1956.

The cemetery was probably built gradually from the mid-17th century when the first tombstones began to appear here. The Jews lived in the Czech Republic in isolated communities with limited rights, and Turnov became one of the places of their settlement. The oldest preserved tombstone dates back to 1680. In the 19th century, the situation of Jews in the Habsburg monarchy improved, as was reflected in the tombstones - since the mid-century, signs have appeared in German, later and Czech. In this way, they reflect changes in the language environment of the community.

Architecturally, the cemetery is simple, but its value lies in the well-preserved documentation of the life and death of the Jewish community. All tombstones are oriented west-east, with inscriptions facing south, typical of Jewish cemeteries. The material of tombstones is not described in detail, but it is probably stone slabs or monuments in different states. The cemetery wall was built in 1800 and a house for the undertaker, which served the practical purposes of the community. Today, this house is being used for an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Jewish community.

The community died in 1940, which meant the end of burial in the cemetery. The last funeral was here in 1956. In 1991, however, the cemetery suffered damage when building a road bridge through its territory. Some tombstones were relocated, but most were relocated. Yet the construction has left visible traces.

Among the attractions are the fact that there are buried ancestors of prominent personalities, as a writer Ivan Olbracht or poet Pavel Tigrid. The exhibition in the house near the cemetery wall offers visitors an overview of the life of the Jewish community in Turnov and its surroundings. This exposure is an important source of information about the past, which would otherwise be difficult to reconstruct.

Today the cemetery is protected as a cultural monument and is open to the public. His visit is important for historians and all those interested in cultural heritage. The cemetery is part of the wider cultural context of Turnova and offers a unique opportunity to become acquainted with the history of the local Jewish community.

Welcome, dear visitors. You are standing in front of one of the oldest and most interesting places in our region - the Jewish cemetery in Turnov. Around you lies a quiet place where centuries and history meet. Look at the tall stone walls surrounding you. There are hundreds of tombstones here that testify to the life and sadness of the people who have rested here.

The cemetery here has a long and rich history. The first preserved tombstone here dates back to 1680, which means this place is more than a three-year-old. Jews have been part of Turnova's life for a long time, and their cemetery was a place where they met relatives and friends. In the middle of the eighteenth century, a morgue was built, which was used for burial and was also home to the grave man here. The nineteenth century began to be written in Czech, which shows how the Jewish community in Turnov adapted to the local language.

Now pay attention to how the tombstones are arranged. They are oriented west-east, which is typical of Jewish cemeteries. The inscriptions on them are turned south so that people can pray to Jerusalem at the funeral. Look up where some tombstones are decorated with fine reliefs or texts in Hebrew, somewhere also in German. Some of them are old, their stone faces are worn out in time, but they still tell stories.

In 1940, the Jewish community in Turnov died because of tragic events. The last funeral was here in 1956. In the 1990s, a bridge was built over the cemetery, which means that part of the tombstones were moved to preserve their integrity and security.
