Klingerovo mauzoleum Mausoleum

Klingerovo mauzoleum is a family tomb in the village of Nové Město pod Smrkem, built in 1901. The building dominates the local cemetery and represents an important monument thanks to architecture inspired by the Italian Renaissance and original stonework.

The building was built by the descendants of Ignaz Klinger, founder of the local textile factories. Some sources indicate the year of construction until 1912. At the time of the creation of the mausoleum, an intensive cultural and architectural recovery took place in Central Europe. This reflected a return to historical styles, especially the Renaissance.

The building has an overhead and underground floor. The remains of the Klinger family are stored in the underground section. The style of the building resembles the works of late Renaissance architect Andrea Palladia, who drew from the architecture of ancient Rome. Similar patterns can be found, for example, at Villa Capra in Vicenza or at the church Il Redentore in Venice. The value of the work underlines original sandstone linings and detailed stonework.

The Klinger family owned the building. After World War II, the building began to dissipate, and in 1987 it was considered as demolition. The fate of the mausoleum changed on October 11, 1993, when it was included among the real-estate cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. A large reconstruction took place between 1995 and 2000 with financial support from the Ministry of Culture, the district office in Liberec and the city.

Today the renovated mausoleum is an important architectural element of the region. It is an example of historicism, which has preserved its original form and stonewalling details. This monument is worth visiting anyone who is interested in the architecture and history of the local industrial heritage.
