Czech heritage records: the oldest and largest town halls, castles, chateaux, churches, bridges and breweries

Czech heritage records · overview

Oldest, largest, first. These are the questions people most often ask search engines, whether planning a trip, writing a school project or competing in a quiz. And records are exactly where the internet gets things wrong most often: a year is copied from one website to the next, “oldest surviving” turns into “oldest ever”, and legend is passed off as fact.

That is why we checked every record in several independent sources: the National Heritage Institute, the Archaeological Atlas of the Czech Academy of Sciences, site managers, Guinness World Records and academic literature. Where sources disagree, we say so.

The oldest town hall in the Czech Republic

King John of Luxembourg allowed Prague's Old Town to establish a town hall in 1338, so the Old Town Hall is named the first town hall in Bohemia. Brno's Old Town Hall has older walls, though, with its oldest room from the first half of the 13th century. Cheb and Olomouc have claims too. The article also covers the truth about the astronomical clock, the Brno Dragon and the crooked pinnacle.

The oldest brewery in the Czech Republic

Why records differ

In every article we come across the same reasons why sources disagree:

  • Founding or surviving building? The first church in Bohemia stood at Levý Hradec, but the oldest standing one is at Budeč.
  • What is measured? A castle's area with or without gardens? That is why Český Krumlov covers 6 hectares according to one source and 3 according to another.
  • Which territory? Cheb had a stone castle before Přimda, but has belonged to Bohemia only since 1322.
  • New research. Since March 2026, Loket has been a hundred years older than the textbooks said.

We will keep adding records. If you know of a mistake or a record that should not be missing, let us know.
