Bassova vila stands in the Brno Lip Street in part Pisárky and is one of the remarkable examples of functionalist architecture of the 1930s. It was built in 1932 for the Bass family, traders in the textile industry. The project was developed by architect Zikmund Kerekes, who created the construction in full accordance with the ideals of modernist architecture of the interwar period.

Eliska Bass (1878-1942) was the head of the household, who lived as the widow of her husband Zikmund Bass (1881-1930). Together with two sons, Kurt and Bedřech, she inhabited this newly built villa.

The villa represents a typical two-story building with a flat roof. Its rectangular plan and asymmetrical facade are oriented to the street in five axes. The characteristic element is the glazed bay in the first axis which passes through both floors. On the ground floor is the main entrance with three-wing glass doors. On the first floor there is a balcony from second to fifth axis, supported by four pillars. The second floor is equipped with three-piece windows in the middle axes and in the last axis there is a two-piece door leading to a half-circle balcony with tubular railing.

The Bass brothers became involved in the dramatic events of World War II. Bedřech Bass (1910-1979) graduated from the Law Faculty of the German University of Prague in 1924-1934 and worked as a lawyer in Brno in the following five years. After the German occupation he fled abroad and entered the Czechoslovak foreign army in 1941. He joined the Czechoslovak unit in the Soviet Union, which was involved in the liberation of Czechoslovakia, and reached the rank of lieutenant. Kurt Bass (1912-1966) joined the foreign army also in 1941. He fought at Tobruk, was transferred to England and France and took part in the Dunkerque fight. After returning to Czechoslovakia he was sentenced and imprisoned in 1950; He didn't get full rehabilitation until 1990. Their mother Elishka died in 1942 after transport from Terezin.

The villa represents not only an example of quality functionalist architecture, but also a testimony about the fate of the Czech Jewish family during the Second World War.

Welcome to Bass' villa, a unique functionalist architectural monument in Pisarky. You are standing in front of an asymmetric facade, which is a symbol of modern design in the 1930s. Right now you can see how the villa stretches along the street, with its shapes and lines resembling modern art.

Let's move forward in time and find out how this villa came into being. In 1932, architect Zikmund Kerekes worked out a project for the Bass family who were textile traders. The Bass family was known for their business activity and their villa was their home. Zikmund Kerekes focused on the ideals of the modernist architecture of the interwar period, which are characterised by functionalism and simplicity.

Now pay attention to the facade of the villa. Notice how the individual parts of the building complement each other and form a harmonious whole. The facade is made of bricks and has a simple but effective design. The facade of the villa is rich in details designed by architect Kerekes. You can see how elements like windows and doors harmonically fit into the overall design.

Bassova vila is also associated with many interesting stories and personalities. The Bass family was very active in the textile industry and their villa was their home. Elizabeth Bass, the mother of the family, was a great supporter of art and culture. Zikmund Bass, the father of the family, was a textile trader and died before building the villa. Bedřich Bass, son of Eliška and Zikmund, was a lawyer and participated in the liberation of Czechoslovakia. Kurt Bass, son of Eliška and Zikmund, fought in the Czechoslovak foreign army.

Bassova vila is also an interesting example of functionalist architecture in the 1930s. Its design is unique and reflects the ideals of the modernist architecture of the interwar period. If you have not yet examined the interior of the villa, you can go back inside and examine it in more detail. Or you can continue your tour of Pisárec streets and discover other historical monuments and attractions. Thank you for visiting Bass' villa and we hope you enjoyed it.
