Děvičky Zřícenina

Děvičky is a ruined Gothic castle located in the Pavlovské vrchy range within the Jihomoravský kraj region of southern Moravia. Perched on a limestone cliff at an elevation of 428 meters, it has been recognized as a cultural monument since 1964 due to its historical significance and dominant landscape presence. The origins of Děvičky trace back to the early 13th century when it was first mentioned in records as Dewiczky, serving as a royal border fortress under the Kingdom of Bohemia.

The castle's history is intertwined with legends and documented events that highlight its strategic importance over centuries. According to folklore, the name "Děvičky" derives from three petrified maidens whose statuesque forms are said to stand before the ruins today. These tales vary, including stories of a Tatar princess and her companions or daughters of a lord named Arnulf who faced tragic fates. Historically, Děvičky was first mentioned in 1222 as a royal border fortress under King Přemysl Otakar I's reign during the consolidation of Bohemia by the Přemyslid dynasty.

Architecturally, Děvičky likely began as a wooden structure before being rebuilt with stone at the end of the 13th century under King Wenceslaus II. This reconstruction marked its transformation into a more formidable stronghold. The castle underwent further modifications in the 14th century when it was granted to the Lichtenštejn family by King John of Luxembourg, who added defensive enhancements and constructed a small bailey. In the 16th century, Adam z Ditrichštejna purchased the estate, initiating significant renovations that included brickwork for residential spaces and a renaissance-style bastion with gun ports.

Ownership of Děvičky shifted over time, reflecting broader historical currents. After its initial establishment as a royal fortress, it passed to various hands including Lipolt z Hardeggu and Crha z Ceblovic in the mid-13th century. The castle's strategic importance was underscored during the Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1529 when its fortifications were strengthened. Later, during the Thirty Years' War, Swedish forces occupied Děvičky, leading to its plundering and eventual decline.

Today, Děvičky stands as a romantic ruin within the protected landscape area of Pálava, offering visitors panoramic views of the surrounding region. The site is accessible via marked trails from nearby Popice or Pavlov, with distances ranging from 1.2 km to over 7 km depending on the starting point. Efforts are underway by the volunteer organization Památky Pálavy to preserve and stabilize the ruins, ensuring they remain safe for public exploration.
