Dolní náměstí 49 is a protected house located at Lower Square 17 / 49 in Olomouci. The object bears the register number of the ÚSKP 13593 / 8-3590 and the GPS coordinates of this cultural monument of the Czech Republic are 49.59302, 17.25178. It is remarkable that it was created by combining two originally separate Renaissance houses into one building, which was subsequently modified in a baroque spirit.

There are no detailed reports of the oldest history, specific builders or original owners of this house. The historical development of the building is, however, due to building modifications that have been proven to have taken place during the 18th century when the Renaissance building was transformed into a Baroque spirit.

The architectural form of the house is based on its development. In the core there are two Renaissance objects which have been modified and joined into one whole. During the 19th century, the facade of the building underwent modifications that led to its current simplified form. Other specific building details, art elements or interior arrangements are not defined in the official monuments.

In view of the extent of the sources available, data on former owners, administrators and dramatic historical events associated with this particular house have not been retained. Likewise, there are no key historical events, battles or significant figures in the register records that would be present in this house.

Today this building is registered as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is located in the territory of Olomouce. The accessibility of the interior is governed by the current private or commercial use, but the view of the exterior offers an opportunity to see the historical development in Lower Square.

Visiting this place reminds of the importance of the historical building fund Olomouce and offers a view of the construction development ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque to the simplified modifications of the nineteenth century. It is worth stopping while walking through the city and personally exploring this subtle, but memorable, valuable track of the past.

Welcome to the heart of Olomouce in Lower Square. You are standing in front of the house with the descriptive number forty-nine, which is a registered cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Give this place a moment of your attention and let yourself breathe into the history that is in front of you at this moment in all its silent nobility.

Look in front of you at the overall appearance of this building. When you look at her front wall, you see the result of the long development that this building has undergone over the centuries. The historical roots of this house go deep into the Renaissance period. Imagine the time when the town square was only formed in its present form, when people walked through here in period clothes and when the first chapters of the local human living and craft began to be written here.

Let's move on in time a little further into the eighteenth century. At this time the house underwent a significant transformation, in which it gained a new face corresponding to the baroque style at the time. The Baroque brought to our cities pomp, movement and emphasis on the shapes that should have taken on every bystander. Later, during the nineteenth century, there were other building modifications. This time the creators went in the opposite direction and made the overall appearance of the facade simpler. You can observe this more sparsely made facade at this very moment when you stand on the pavement of the square and explore the exterior of this house.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and what you can see at the construction site. Since the exact names of the builders or creators who designed or modified the house remain secret in history, the matter of the building itself speaks to us all the more. Look carefully at how the old Renaissance foundations mix with later baroque interventions and nineteenth-century facade simplification. Each building layer carries traces of people living here, working and adapting their home to the image of their time. Try to perceive the fine transitions in the plaster and the overall composition of the house, which for centuries form a solid part of the local urban unit.

When we look for specific human destinies that would be linked to this house, historical sources have left us mysterious silence. The names of prominent historical figures who would have stayed in this house have not been preserved in written records until today. But what's the problem? That is where the special charm of such places lies. We can imagine the hundreds of residents, merchants, craftsmen, or families who have experienced their daily worries and joys behind these walls without knowing that their names will fade over time. The house itself became a silent witness to human lives, whose story is written in the very bricks and tones of his facade.

Many questions remain hidden from us because the chronology of the building phases hides unknown data and concrete details of who exactly and when laid the individual stones, took time. But this certain mystery gives space a special atmosphere. The House of Lower Square number forty-nine does not need the loud names of the famous monarchs to take our attention. His strength lies in his stability. It stands here as a fixed point in a variable world, remembers the changes of Renaissance, Baroque and later epoch and still completes the unique character of Olomouc historical centre.

I hope you enjoyed this stop and that you are taking away a pleasant experience of exploring the building layers of our cultural heritage. When you continue to walk on Olomouc squares and alleys, remember to keep your eyes open and to see those houses whose names of creators have been forgotten because the true soul of the city is hiding in them. Thank you for your attention, I wish you a wonderful rest of the day and a happy journey on your next discovery of the historical beauty of Olomouce. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

A tour of the historical house in the Lower Square in Olomouci is best planned for morning hours, where it is calmer in the city centre and the streets are not crowded with people. In addition, the morning light highlights the Renaissance and Baroque details of the historical facade.

For transport to Olomouce and to Lower Square you can use a car and public transport. Please check the accurate and up-to-date information about the most suitable connections of urban vehicles in the local traffic search engine in advance.

Take comfortable shoes with you for sightseeing, as historical tiles around the square can be uneven. A small bag with a drink will also be useful, and on warmer days the headgear will shine in the open area of the square.

The morning sun, which illuminates the facade, is best suited for photographing the exterior of the house in Lower Square. Beautiful pictures are taken from opposite side of the square, from where the overall architectural form of the building stands out in the context of surrounding historical buildings.
