Dům s Horní baštou House

Dům s Horní baštou, located on the Upper Bašta street in Štramberk in Nová Jicin district, is a historical monument located in the city conservation. Originally built as a cannon bastion at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, it was later converted into a residential house. It is included in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic and is an important part of local history.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the bastion was built as a key part of the urban fortifications protecting Štramberk in times of uncertainty and military conflict. The transition between the 15th and 16th centuries brought significant changes in Central Europe, with political structures and cultural development changing rapidly. The bastion, equipped with a battleship and ejected outside the wall, was a key defense component.

The house No. 307 is characterized by an oval plan made of quarry stone with tent roof covered with shingles. The original function of the bastion as a defensive object was gradually changed, which is apparent from the change of its structural elements. Shots on the floor were replaced by windows and a porch was broken into the side. Cimburi has been aligned, which shows the conversion of the bastion from the defense building to the residential building.

The history of Štramberka is rich and variable. According to the urbarian from 1558, 22 houses with wooden flooring were originally built in the square, which had the right to conical. In 1614 the number of farms increased to 28 and there was a rectory, church and school in the city. During the reign of Jesuits in 1656 there were already 53 houses in the city. The first brick house No. 10 was built on the square in 1799. In 1855, the fire destroyed 40 houses and two barns, affecting the city's development.

Dům s Horní baštou is connected to the city wall by a narrow neck. On the floor there are three wall-to-wall windows, while on the ground floor there are two shooting points and a torso support. The interesting thing is that a beer bath was located in the bastion, which gives the building a unique character.

Today the House with the Upper Bastion presents not only an architectural monument, but also a testimony about the history and culture of Štramberka. It's a place worth visiting for those who want to understand the past of the city and its development. To remember the historical value of such monuments is important not only for the preservation of cultural heritage, but also for future generations that could draw inspiration and knowledge from this past.
