Fuchs villa in Žatci is a solitary residential building from the end of the 19th century. Since 1994 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The building is located in 1012 Volynský Čechy Street and represents an important example of historical architecture associated with the author, architect Wilhelm Fuchs.

The villa was established in the second half of the 19th century, at the time of industrial development of Czech countries, when richer layers invested in representative settlements. The architecture was often returned to older styles; in the case of this villa, the creators were inspired by the Tuscan Renaissance.

The construction has a U-shaped ground plan and a valb roof. Its characteristic features include a corner tower, a double risalite and a leading arcade. The facade is made up of solid masonry, supplemented by belt and corner bosages. The exterior and interior are decorated with architectural details such as balustards, pilasters and sgraffiti.

The history of the object is closely linked to its owners. In 1902 the architect Wilhelm Fuchs himself lived in the building. The later major owner was Hans Krippner. His fate was tragically concluded in July 1945, when he was the victim of postwar violence against the German population.

The year 1994 became an important milestone in the modern history of the building, when the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic declared the villa a cultural monument. The construction was officially recognised as a valuable document of historical architecture.

Fuchsova Villa is an interesting destination for people interested in 19th century architecture who visit Žatka. The city offers a rich historical centre famous for the tradition of growing hops and monuments on the UNESCO list. The visit to the building allows you to see the way of representative living in the late 19th century and to remember the layers of history that survived in the Žetek building.

Welcome, you are standing in front of Fuchs' villa in Žatec, one of the most interesting examples of the city residence of the late nineteenth century. In front of you is an impressive building with a U-shaped floor plan, the roof of which is dominated by a characteristic Valb form. Note the elegant corner tower, which is laid over the corners of the building and gives the whole building a significant silhouette. The facade is made of a concrete masonry, the surface of which is supplemented with belt and corner bosáj, which underlines the historical feel while revealing the craftsmanship of the creators. The whole scene is complemented by balustrads, pilasters and sgraffiti inspired by the Tuscan Renaissance, which decorate both exterior and interior. Your eyes are now looking at these elements, and together we will immerse ourselves in the story that this villa hides.

Let us move on to the very origin and historical context of this building. The villa was built at the end of the nineteenth century, namely in the years when Žatec developed as an important centre of salt industry and urban culture. The main initiator and author of the project was Wilhelm Fuchs, an architect who decided to create a residential building that reflects not only his personal taste but also his architectural trends. In 1902 Fuchs lived here alone in his work, allowing him to watch in detail how his proposal turns into a living space. After World War I and during World War II the villa witnessed dramatic events - in 1945 Hans Krippner lived here, whose fate was tragically interrupted by postwar violence. Despite all the difficulties experienced by the villa over the years, it remained preserved and was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 1994, thereby obtaining official protection and recognition of its historical value.

Now pay attention to the architecture surrounding you. The U-shaped floor plan allows you to see the inner court, which is part of the overall composition and provides space for private meetings and public events. The Valb roof, typical of the period in which the villa was built, gives the building a robust and slightly romantic look. The National Tower, located on every corner, is not only an ornament, but also a practical element, which has in the past served to improve the lighting and ventilation of the inner spaces. The double risalite, which stands out from the main facade, and the front arcade underlines the symmetry and rhythm of the entire object. On the facade, you meet with belt bossages that roll along the upper edge, and with corner bossages that decorate the corners and underlines their importance. Balustades are lined by terraces and windows, with elegant shapes resembling Renaissance motifs. Pilasters, located along the pole lines, add depth to the facade and play light and shadow. Sgraffiti, which adorns certain parts of the outer shell, brings colour accents and reminders of artistic influences from Tuscany which Wilhelm Fuchs admired and wanted to transfer them to his work.

Stories and personalities associated with this place are as fascinating as its architecture. Wilhelm Fuchs, author of the construction, was not only an architect, but also a passionate collector of works of art and a lover of historical styles. His vision is reflected in every detail of the villa, from the overall composition to small ornaments. Hans Krippner, who lived here during World War II, was a local businessman and was one of the important personalities of the then Žatka. His fate, which ended tragically in 1945, resembles a darker chapter in history, while underlining how much different human destinies can meet in one building. In 1994, when the villa was declared a cultural monument, a new chapter was opened - the protection and restoration of this architectural gem became a joint effort of city authorities, experts and local people who wanted to preserve the legacy of past generations for the future.

And now I'm offering you an interesting thing that can attract even the most curious listeners. The villa boasts not only its floor plan and valb roof, but also a double risalite and a leading arcade that is typical of Renaissance inspiration, but in the local context it has a unique character. The National Tower, which you just saw, was designed to serve as a landmark for visitors and locals, while underlining the symmetry of the entire building. Another unusual element is the sgraffiti, which on the facade captures motifs inspired by the Tuscan Renaissance - such a connection of Italian elegance with the Czech environment is quite rare and gives the villa a unique cultural dimension. If you look at balustrads and pilastries, you can imagine how social meetings, musical evenings and art exhibitions have been held in these stone walls in the past.

In conclusion, I invite you to further explore this architectural treasure. Walk around the villa, feel the atmosphere that persists for over a hundred years. If you have the opportunity to look at the details of the facade up close - belt and corner barefoot, sgraffiti, pilasters and balustades will reveal to you the craftsmanship and artistic intent that Wilhelm Fuchs has put into every stone. Let yourself be inspired by the stories of the people who lived here and think about how history and the present intersect in this space. Thank you for taking the time to listen to this guide story, and we wish you a pleasant rest of the visit to Žatka. Let Fuchs' villa bring you not only an aesthetic experience, but also a deeper understanding of the rich cultural tradition of our city. Say goodbye to this place with respect and leave knowing that you have touched a unique piece of Czech architectural history.

Tips for visitors

For visiting the villa is ideal sunny day during spring or autumn months, when the low sun beautifully paints the details of the facade and corner tower. In summer the view of the construction can be partially limited by the growing greenery in the gardens.

If you are travelling by car, take public storage places in the wider city centre and walk to the villa to enjoy the atmosphere of the old town.

Don't forget to take a high-quality camera with wide-angle lens to help you capture the entire available U-shaped building. The best light for shooting details of the turret and architectural elements of the facade is in the morning.

When walking with children, use the path to the villa as part of a larger quest for the knowledge of history. In the vicinity of the villa there is the historical center Žatce, which is listed on the World Heritage List, which offers children the opportunity to discover interesting streets and tradition of hop cultivation.

After searching the exterior of the villa, proceed to the historic heart of the city. You can walk through the places associated with the hop tradition and admire the sights that are included in the UNESCO list and form a unique character throughout the city.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring of September the villa accompanied by awakening greenery and blooming gardens. Soft spring light gently accentuates the facade details and the overall atmosphere is fresh. I recommend wearing a lighter jacket and visiting a place in the morning where the air is cleaner and the surrounding area less crowded than in the season.

The summer season brings rich green trees and sharp sun, which creates significant shadows on the walls of the building. The atmosphere is hot and full of life. The best time to walk around the house is early morning or late evening to avoid the greatest heat. Light, breathable clothes and a sun hat are suitable.

In autumn, the surroundings of the villa turn into gold and red tones, creating a melancholy mood. The fog in the morning gives the building a mysterious look and highlights its historical character. It is advisable to carry a waterproof coat and choose a sunny afternoon for the best color contrast with the facade.

In winter, the architecture of the villa is more stringent and cleaner, especially if it is covered by a layer of snow. Without the leaves on the trees, the construction is better seen from a distance and feels calmer. Due to the short days, it is ideal to visit around noon when the most light is. Don't forget the warm sweater, gloves and fat shoes.
