Hotel Avion Hotel building
Hotel Avion grew up on the site of the older building in České street no. 20 in Brno, where the inn was originally located. In the nineties of the nineteenth century it was operated by the innkeeper Ignác Kostelecký, who delayed until his death around 1923. The takeover of the business belonged to his son Miroslav Kostelecký, who realized the huge potential in rebuilding the old building into a modern hotel. He decided to address the young and talented architect Bohuslav Fuchs, who was the voice of Czech functionalist architecture at the time.
Bohuslav Fuchs designed a new building between 1926 and 1927, with the construction taking place from 1927 to 1928. The exceptional nature of the project consisted of the size of the building - the plot measured only eight metres in width and Fuchs had to solve all functions of the hotel in these very limitations of spatial arrangement. As a result, the building was 40 metres tall and 34 metres long, which became one of the narrowest hotels in Europe. The new hotel started operation with 50 rooms, a cafe and a bar on the ground floor.
The building was recognised as an important architectural work and on 23 March 1964 it entered the list of real estate monuments. Since the 1980s, it has been undergoing partial repairs, which unfortunately led to insensitive removal of original equipment elements. The condition of the hotel deteriorated in the long term until a member of the famous circus family Stanislav Berousek bought it in 2005, who intended to repair it intentionally.
In 2010 Hotel Avion was included in the list of national cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The reconstruction plans, designed by the famous architect Eva Jiřičná, have been addressed in the long term, but the financial requirements of the project in the estimated price of 80 million crowns have proved impossible. The final reconstruction took place under the leadership of new owners of the Berouskové family in the period 2016 to 2022.
The hotel is built on reinforced concrete construction and hides a number of architectural attractions. Part of the interior is a staircase with a sailor's touch and railing, in which the sculpture decoration by Magdalena Jetelová was involved. The original rooms teach space through built-in cabinets.
Today the hotel offers accommodation with 27 rooms, three of which are triple and other double, which together provides seventy beds. There is a modernised café on the ground floor, which directly follows the museum dedicated to the history of the building and part of architect Bohuslav Fuchs. The museum with a view of the whole of Brno is located on the fourth floor, at a height of 40 metres, where visitors can see even one of the original rooms and enjoy the view from the terrace on the top floor.

Welcome to the heart of Brno, a place where history meets courage and precision. Right now, you're standing in front of a building that at first glance may seem subtle, but it's actually one of the most fascinating architectural pieces of the city. Look carefully at the facade before you. Notice how unusually narrow this building is. Do you feel like there's barely any way to fit into this space? You're right. You're standing in front of the Avion Hotel, a building that is the real triumph of human reason over limited space.
Let us now go back almost a hundred years in time, to the end of the twentieth decade of the last century. It is 1927 and Brno is experiencing its golden era of modern architecture. It is at this time that Avion is created according to the design of one of the most important architects of his time, Bohuslav Fuchs. Fuchs was a master of functionalism, a direction that put above all other benefits, purity of lines and efficiency. Imagine the situation the architect was in. He was given the task of designing the hotel, but he had a plot at his disposal that was extremely narrow. The width of the land was only eight metres. It would be a nightmare for ordinary builders, but for Fuchs, it was a challenge he accepted with incredible elegance.
Now if you look at the building again, try to imagine what spatial puzzles the architect had to solve. How to get all the functions of the hotel, including the cafe and the bar, into such a narrow zone of the country, while maintaining a sense of air and light? The result was a construction that was completed in 1928 and immediately became an icon. Fuchs used the reinforced concrete structure to maximize the inner space and create a stable but light object. Avion was not just an ordinary accommodation, it was a symbol of a modern city that was not afraid to experiment and seek new solutions.
Now pay attention to the overall impression of the building. Notice the rugged but noble simplicity. The functionalism you see here rejected unnecessary ornaments. Everything on this building has its practical purpose. It is this purity that makes Avion so timeless. It's an architecture that doesn't scream, but whispers about its quality and ingenuity. The building has served as a hotel since its beginning and has become a natural center of social life, where the Brno elite and travelers met in the cafe and bar.
Now let's think about the people who were connected to this place. In addition to Bohuslav Fuchs himself, other personalities have left their trail. Names such as Ignác Kostelecký, Miroslav Kostelecký or Stanislav Berousek play an important role in the history of the hotel. These people have helped maintain the continuity and importance of this place over the decades. Hotel Avion wasn't just a house, it was a living organism that adapted to changing times.
If you have the opportunity to look inside, I suggest you focus on the details that are key to this construction. One of the most significant elements is the staircase. It has a very specific, seagoing touch that, combined with narrow space, makes it feel like you're on board a modern ship. The sculpture decoration created by the talented Magdalena Jetelová also contributes to this experience. Its work gives a strong functionalism softness and artistic dimension, creating a perfect contrast between the technical precision of construction and human creativity.
The Avion building has undergone various stages of recognition over the years. Already in 1964 it was registered on the list of real estate monuments, which was a recognition of its architectural value. However, the peak came in 2010 when the hotel was declared a national cultural monument. This means that the state acknowledged that Avion is not only important for Brno, but is an invaluable asset for the whole Czech culture and architecture.
However, even a durable structure needs care. In recent years the hotel has undergone extensive and very sensitive reconstruction. The goal was to preserve the original brilliance of Fuchs' design while simultaneously shooting the building to the level of modern comfort. The renowned architect Eva Jiřičná was also involved in this process, which helped link history to the present with its approach. The entire reconstruction was completed in 2022 when Hotel Avion was reopened to the public in full glory. It's a fascinating example of how an old memory can be brought back to life without losing its soul.
And now I'm going to take you to one interesting thing that might surprise you. We mentioned the plot was only eight meters wide. Did you know that thanks to this unique dimension, Hotel Avion is one of the narrowest hotels in Europe? Imagine this - in the heart of the continent, where thousands of hotels are standing, it is this jewel in Brno that is one of the most extreme examples of spatial investigation. It is an almost architectural paradox: a building that is so narrow that it could be tight in it, thanks to Bohuslav Fuchs' ingenious design, it is spacious and airy. It is proof that restrictions are not an obstacle, but may be an inspiration for the creation of something truly extraordinary.
When you stand before this hotel today, feel the atmosphere of the place. Avion is a silent witness to the transformation of Brno, a witness to the advent of modernity and a witness to how the perception of beauty and utility changed. It's a place where iron concrete meets art and mathematical precision meets an architect's vision.
Thank you for accompanying me on this short journey through the history and architecture of Hotel Avion. It's up to you now. Go through the building from different angles, feel its rhythm and maybe try to figure out what other secret corners are hiding this narrow but deep piece of Brno history. If you have the chance, look inside and look for the nautical staircase and the works of Magdalena Jetel.
I wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty of our city. See you next time.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is in the morning during the working week when it is in the city centre more calm and you can better enjoy the unique spatial concept of the interior without a large number of other visitors.
The hotel is located in a pedestrian zone in the centre of Brno, so we recommend taking advantage of public transport. If you are travelling by car, use one of the paid parking homes in the wider centre, because direct parking at the building is not possible.
For photography we recommend to capture iconic functionalist facade from the street, where the narrow width of the building stands out. In the interior, use the natural light penetrating glass areas, which beautifully highlights the clean lines of Bohuslav Fuchs architecture.
Within 30 minutes' walk there is a historical centre of the city, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and Špilberk Castle. Vila Tugendhat is also an essential stop for architecture lovers, where we recommend booking an entrance in advance.
When visiting with children, count on the rooms of the hotel to be very narrow and chipped. The tour is more suitable for older children who appreciate the technical attractions of the building, for prams the movement in the interior can be more difficult.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring brings freshness to Brno and the waking greenery around the monument. The atmosphere is full of optimism and the light is fine, which is ideal for observing the facade details. We recommend you dress in layered clothes so you don't get caught in the weather. The best time to visit is in the morning, when crowds of tourists are still small.
The summer season stands out with intense sun and hot air, which complements the lively activity in the city centre. The building in bright light is very representative and energetic. Due to high temperatures and the biggest influx of visitors, it is advisable to come first thing in the morning. Don't forget light, breathable clothes and plenty of fluids.
Autumn offers a nostalgic mood and golden shades in the surrounding parks. The lighting is soft and naturally warm, which creates a cozy feeling while walking around the object. It's practical to carry a waterproof jacket or umbrella for frequent collisions. It is ideal to plan a visit to late afternoon hours.
In winter it is dominated by freezing air and short days, which, however, complements the holiday atmosphere in advent time. The monument in contrast to snow looks very elegant and mysterious. It is essential to choose warm clothes and fixed shoes. We recommend prior verification of opening times which are shorter in this period.
