Hvožďany Fortress

Nestled in the village of Hvožďany within the Příbram District lies a partially preserved Renaissance castle, transformed into a Baroque architectural marvel over time. In a significant transaction in 1543, Apolena redeemed the castle from Jiří z Kalenic and subsequently shared ownership with her husband Jan Koce z Dobrše. By 1593, Arnošt Václav Vitanovský had acquired a share of the estate, eventually selling it to Karel Leopold Caretto-Millesimo in 1664.

Throughout its history, Hvožďany Castle has witnessed various key events and transformations. Initially abandoned, the original structure was replaced by a new castle in the first half of the 16th century. The Baroque transformation shifted its primary function towards economic purposes. In the late 1940s, the main building underwent another significant change when it was converted into apartments.
