Kaple Nejsvětější Trojice (Markvartovice) Chapel

The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity in Markvartovice exemplifies early Baroque architecture, showcasing both religious significance and resilience through conflict. Situated on the cadastral territory of the municipality of Markvartovice in the Moravskoslezský kraj region, this filial Roman Catholic chapel was built in the mid-17th century. Its historical importance is highlighted by its registration as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 1964.

The chapel's origins date back to the mid-17th century when Bohemia was part of the Habsburg Monarchy and undergoing significant religious and political changes after the Thirty Years' War. Historical sources suggest that Alžběta Polyxena, hraběnka z Vrbna, may have commissioned its construction, as indicated by a cornerstone dated 1652 found during renovations in 1886.

Architecturally, the chapel began as a simple structure with only a chancel built from large blocks adorned with ornaments. In 1886, it underwent significant renovations that included replacing a wooden tower with a brick one and expanding the nave. The exterior features an oblong masonry building with a polygonal chancel, a sacristy attached to its southern side, and a partially embedded bell tower in the façade. The bell tower is topped by a pyramidal roof covered with shingles. Architectural elements such as lisenes framing the façade and a main cornice running over the mass of the tower enhance its aesthetic appeal. Internally, the nave is vaulted with three fields on arches supported by piers, while the sacristy has a flat ceiling.

Throughout its history, the chapel has faced various challenges and changes in ownership or administration. During World War II, in April 1945, it suffered damage and was burned down during liberation battles. The original altar, featuring the coat of arms of the lords of Vrbna, along with wooden statues of Saint Wenceslas and Saint Urban, were destroyed. Restoration efforts began in 1947, replacing lost elements like the original altar and statues with new ones commissioned in 1949. Further restorations took place in 1981, focusing on the façade, roof, and interior painting.

Key events in the chapel's history include its initial construction in the mid-17th century and subsequent renovations in 1886 that expanded its structure. The discovery of a cornerstone dated 1652 during these renovations provides insight into its early history. Another notable event was the requisitioning of the original bell, cast by Hanuš Knauff in 1653, during World War II.

Its interior is equipped with modern furnishings, including a new altar, pews, and a crossway from 1949, reflecting its continuous adaptation over time.
