The monastery mill in Louka is a classical water mill located in the village Znojmo, southwest of the monastery on the river Dyji. Together with the site, it is protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic and still serves for the production of electricity supplied to the network. This construction represents an important part of the historical economic background of the site.

The mill was founded by the premonstrate monastery in Louka. The oldest construction phases and the beginnings of the operation have been preserved with little detail. Historical sources show, however, that the building has undergone several reconstructions during its existence.

Originally, the Renaissance Mill had a major transformation in which it gained a late classical form. Architectural form an integral part of the wider economic background of the area. The water to the drive was provided and still provides a 150-metre-long drive that leads from the Loucký Jez through the floodgates.

The monument was owned by the Premonstrat monastery in Louka, which established it for its economic needs. Details of other specific owners or administrators in available sources are missing, but key technological milestones from modern traffic history are known.

The installation of Francis' 15 kW turbine in 1906 became an important technical milestone. After long years of operation and subsequent shut-down, the facility was able to repair and restore its operation in 1992. Since then, the object has been fully serving its purpose and produces electricity for the public network.

Today, the Monastic Mill in Louka is a functional technical monument building, which stands in close proximity to the Loucký monastery and the Dyje River. The visit to this site offers a view of the connection of historical architecture with industrial history and functional water technology, represented by preserved drive, eat and remodeled turbine from the beginning of the twentieth century.

Welcome to one of the most interesting technical and historical monuments on the Dyji River in Znojmo. You are standing in front of the impressive Monastic Mill in Louka, which stands before you in its impressive integrity. Feel the peaceful atmosphere of a place where the power of flowing water is combined with ancient human workmanship.

When you look at the mill building in front of you, you can, in your mind, admire the centuries that have escaped its origin. The history of this place goes far back to the past, namely, around the year twelve hundred. At that time the mill was founded by the order of premonstrates as an integral and extremely important part of the economic background of their powerful monastery in Louka. The monks knew well why they chose the bank of Dyje. Water was the main engine of progress and economic prosperity at the time. The mill was intended to provide livelihood and processing to breed for the whole monastery complex, making it a key link to their daily life.

Now let's take a closer look at the very form of the construction you have in front of you. Originally, the Renaissance style of the mill has undergone transformations over the centuries, the most significant of which came around the year eighteen hundred. At that time, the building was rebuilt into a late-classicist style, whose tracks can still be admired on the facade and the overall shape of the building. Take a look at the clean line of the facade and perceive the sophisticated composition that reflects the building taste of its time. Pay attention to how the building naturally fits into the surrounding landscape by the river and forms a harmonious whole with it.

The interesting thing is that this object was not just a witness to the ancient times, but still lives an active life. If you look around you, you might hear the quiet noise of water, which is still the most important element in this place. The whole facility is powered by a 150 meters long drive, which brings water from nearby Loucký Jez. The sources and historical records show that the technical heart of the mill has undergone an interesting development over the years. In nineteen hundred and six, a modern Francis turbine of 15 kilowatts was installed here, which was a big step forward in the area of the use of hydroenergy for the time being. And the story doesn't end there. In nineteen hundred and ninety-two, the entire facility was thoroughly repaired, which successfully restored electricity production. Today, this protected real-estate cultural jewel is still in operation and provides clean electricity directly to the network.

Stop for a moment and try to imagine the people who worked here centuries ago, monks who oversaw the monastery's economy, even craftsmen who designed and maintained the water system here. Their determination and um have lasted until today and you are now a direct witness to this legacy.

I hope that this stop at the Monastery Mill in Louka was rewarding for you and that you will receive a strong experience of connecting history, architecture and living technology. You can now continue to discover the other beauties of the Znojemsk region, or just stop and let the magic of this bank of the Dyje River work on you. Thank you for your attention and goodbye to other sights.

Tips for visitors

To visit the Monastery Mill in Louka near Znojmo, choose the morning hours when the sun is ideally radiating the historical facade and surrounding landscape along the river Dyje. We recommend a spring or autumn period when the surrounding nature is calm and photogenic.

With you pack solid shoes suitable for the movement of the natural terrain around the river and the Loucký Jez, a small snack and drinking water, as refreshments may not be provided in the immediate vicinity of the mill.

The best places for photography can be found on the banks of the river Dyje, from where there is a beautiful view of the water mill and its historical architectural elements associated with the premonstrati economic background.

In the wider area within 30 minutes walk or drive visit the nearby Monastery Louka and the picturesque banks of the river Dyje including the Loucký Jez, which form the historical and natural heart of this location.

For families with children, the surroundings of the river Dyje and the Loucký Jezu are a pleasant walk, but due to the unknown condition of the Monastery Mill itself we recommend to move with children only at a safe distance from the building and water.

Seasonal recommendations

The spring moons turn the surroundings of the Loucké monastery and the adjoining mill in Znojmo into an awakening oasis, where fresh green grass contrasts with massive historical walls and sun rays pleasantly warm the cold morning air without summer heat. During this period you will meet only a minimum of tourists, which allows quiet walks along the river Dyje, with occasional spring showers and colder mornings making it worth taking on fixed shoes and waterproof jackets, and the ideal time for visiting is in the morning when the fog above the water recedes to the spring sun.

During the summer the whole area comes to life, the atmosphere is alive and the sun is shining in sharp angles to the old masonry creates ideal conditions for photography, but the main season attracts the largest crowds of visitors. In order to avoid the greatest of the midday heat and a strenuous crowd of curious people, it is best to arrive first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the sun is softening its strength, and not to forget the headgear, sunglasses and plenty of drinking water.

The autumn landscape in the valley offers a unique spectacle thanks to leaves coloured in golden and rusty tones, which together with foggy herpes leave a deep impression of melancholy and quiet atmosphere on visitors. In the colder autumn days and in the approaching evening, when smoking is much earlier, it is essential to put on warm laminated clothing, windbreaker and fixed non-slip shoes due to wet leaves falling, the best time for inspection is around noon when the temperature reaches its daily maximum.

The winter period covers the memory in deep silence and often also in snow whiteness, which underlines the monumental architecture in dim daylight and creates a fabulous atmosphere with a minimum of people around it. Due to frosty weather, shorter daily time and limited operating hours in winter months, it is necessary to choose very warm winter clothes, hat, gloves and high-quality non-slip shoes to move on the frozen surface, the best place to go is around noon, when the outside is warmer and the surrounding landscape is best lit by low winter sun.
