The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kojetín is one of the important Roman Catholic temples of the district of Přerov and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It serves as a parish church of the parish Kojetín.

The history of sacral construction in Kojetín begins in the deep Middle Ages. It is believed that the first church in Kojetín was founded in the 11th century. The following век brought its reconstruction, so the church that stood at the site of today's construction dates back to the late 13th century. For centuries, his role was not changed until the Thirty Years' War hit him in 1643. When the Swedish troops invaded, the temple was severely damaged and its renewal extended.

Only in January 1687 did Count Ferdinand Julius of Salm-Neuberg decide to ask the Bishop of Olomouc Charles II of Liechtenstein for permission to build a new church. Retrieving the restoration of the old building meant a conscious decision to start over. The construction was completed in 1692 and so Kojetín had a temple building which would correspond to his position and could thus fulfil his functions for a newly forming parish.

The architecture of the church speaks of interbreeding styles and cultures. The construction is 41.7 metres long and reaches 24,6 metres wide with all caples. Its height is 18 metres, while two towers with crosses grow to 50 metres and dominate the Kojetín landscape. The facade is decorated with a Baroque portal containing elements of Renaissance style. Above the entrance there are eight niche, in which there are statues of saints that provide iconographic anchoring of the church.

The interior is organized according to a classic plan with one main boat and two secondary boats. The interior was equipped in the spirit of Viennese Classicism in the middle of the 18th century, which gives its inner spaces elements of elegance and moderation. The valuable items of inventory include the 1739 painting of St. John the Baptist, which comes from the hand of an unknown Italian artist and represents a quality work which has been given a place in the sacral space.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary thus testifies about the changes in religious life in Moravia from the Middle Ages through the war trials to the Baroque restoration. The visitor can observe and admire not only architectural elements, but also the quality of the content and care with which the temple was provided in the past.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church in Kojetín in the Přerov district. It serves the Kojetín parish and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

A church apparently stood in Kojetín already in the eleventh century. The one on today's site was built only at the end of the thirteenth century. In 1643, during the invasion of Swedish troops, this church was severely damaged. Its restoration dragged on for a long time, and so the church's patron, the Tovačov lord Count Ferdinand Julius von Salm-Neuburg, asked the Olomouc bishop Charles II of Liechtenstein in January 1687 for permission to build a new church. The construction was completed in 1692.

The church is 41.7 meters long and with its chapels is 24.6 meters wide. The church itself is 18 meters high, but its two towers with crosses reach a height of 50 meters. The façade is decorated with a Baroque portal with Renaissance elements. Above it are eight niches with statues of saints.

Inside, the church has one main nave and two side naves. The interior furnishings are in the style of Viennese classicism from the middle of the eighteenth century. There is also a painting of Saint John the Baptist from 1739, whose author is an unknown Italian artist.

For kids

About 334 years ago, when everything around it was still different and people spoke in different ways than we did, in a small town Kojetín began building a church that everyone can see today. It was like when someone wanted to build their most beautiful digs and use everything they had - even a little magic, because the church is baroque beauty.
