The Church of Saint Augustine in Valtic is a Roman Catholic church that today serves as a filial church of the Valtic parish. It belongs to the complex of the former monastery of the Brothers of Mercy and together with it is protected as a cultural monument.
The Brothers of Mercy came to Valtic in sixteen hundred and five. They settled in an older hospital, which included a Gothic chapel of Saint Barbara. They began construction of new monastery buildings only in sixteen hundred and sixty-two. From sixteen hundred and sixty-eight onwards, a single-nave early Baroque church then rose up, whose author was apparently Jan Křtitel Erna. It was built on the site of the Chapel of Saint Barbara, which stood near the altar of the new church.
Construction proceeded quickly. The church was consecrated already on June twenty-eighth, sixteen hundred and seventy-one, and two years later, in sixteen hundred and seventy-three, its towers were also completed. The towers acquired the appearance they have today in eighteen hundred and seventy-three. Then, according to the design of Viennese architect Josef Kaiser, they were raised by twelve meters and covered with copper. The church at the same time received a new roof made of fired tiles. Until then, for many years it had been covered only by a temporary thatched roof.
The main altarpiece with Saint Augustine was painted in seventeen hundred and fifty-seven by Jan Ignác Cimbal. The sculptural decoration of the interior was created in the eighteenth century by sculptor Ignác Lengelacher.
