The Church of Saint James the Greater, sometimes also referred to as the Church of Saint James the Elder, is a Roman Catholic parish church in Horní Libchavě in the Českolipsko region. Its present Baroque form dates from 1736 and the church is protected as a cultural monument.
However, its history goes back much further. The church is first mentioned in writing in the register of papal tithes from 1352. Its foundation probably relates to the nearby Klinštejn castle, which we have the first written record of from 1339. The dedication to Saint James the Greater is documented as early as 1372. The parish then belonged to the Litoměřice archdeaconry of the Litoměřice deanery.
What the church looked like at that time, we do not know. The next record of it comes from 1426, when it was burned down by the Hussites. During the course of the 15th century it was restored. From this period apparently comes the tower and also the sacristy, which was supposed to have been added in 1499.
After 1623, the Order of Malta took over patronage of the church, which at the same time administered the local parish, the community and the local castle. At the instigation of the order's grand prior Gundakar Popp von Ditrichstein, a new Baroque church was built in 1736 in place of the older church. From the medieval structure, particularly the prismatic tower was preserved. Between 1810 and 1812 the church was extended by a vestibule. The patronage of the Knights of Malta lasted until 1926 and in 1930 the administration of the church passed to the Diocese of Litoměřice.
