Kostel svatého Jiljí (Mladějov) Church

The Church of Saint Giles in Mladějov is a notable cultural monument, recognized for blending Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. Centrally located within the village on an elevated cemetery site, this sacred building dates back to the 14th century with significant modifications made in 1786. It stands as a testament to historical architectural evolution and has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 1964.

Constructed during the Gothic period in the 14th century, the church reflects broader European trends when Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire under the Luxembourg dynasty. Architecturally, the Church features a single-nave design with a closed presbytery supported by buttresses. The presbytery is vaulted with a cross rib vault and finished with groin vaults, showcasing structural techniques from both periods.

The church's interior houses various artifacts spanning the 17th to 19th centuries. The main altar is Rococo style—simple yet elegant—with a 19th-century painting alongside statues of St. Vojtěch and St. Prokopa. Two side altars are Classical style, portal-style from the end of the 18th century. The Baroque pulpit features statues of the Evangelists dating back to the second half of the 17th century.

Among its notable features, the church houses a sandstone pilaster epitaph from 1618 with inscriptions and coats of arms in the vestibule. Additionally, there is a late Renaissance stone fountain with a baluster base within the church. The tin baptismal font, standing on volute legs, dates back to the second half of the 17th century, enriching its historical and artistic value.

The surrounding area includes a robust bell tower built in 1793 on a 19th-century stone base. Adjacent is a Baroque parsonage from 1740, and across the street lies a Baroque castle, adding to the site's historical ambiance. The churchyard serves as the final resting place for František Josef Gerstner, a notable Czech mathematician, physicist, and pioneer in railway development.
