Kostel svatého Jiří (Dobrá) Church

The Church of Saint George in Dobrá on Frýdecku is the parish church of the Ostrava-Opava diocese. It has been a cultural monument since nineteen sixty-four.

The Baroque church stands on the site of an older wooden church, which was moved to Soběšovice. The new church was built between sixteen eighty-two and sixteen eighty-six by Count František Eusebius of Oppersdorf. Relics of the holy martyrs Boniface, Reparata, and Patience were placed in the altar stone. They are still preserved in the altar table to this day. The bells initially hung in a separate wooden bell tower. According to records from sixteen fifty-two and sixteen eighty-eight, there were three bells in it, and a fourth small bell was added with the sanctus tower, that is, a small turret on the roof.

They began building a brick tower in May of eighteen sixteen. The construction was delayed by a severe crop failure and was financially supported by Archduke Albert of Saxony-Teschen, whose coat of arms is on the facade. In eighteen eighteen, three bells were pulled up into it. One of them was cast in seventeen fifty-five by the local priest Karel Ibram from Suchá at the bell foundry of Melchiore Schwann near Olomouc and weighed three hundred and fifty kilograms. The second bell cracked in eighteen oh six and eleven years later it was recast at the Opava workshop of František Stanke. In May of eighteen sixty-two, lightning struck the tower. The small fire that resulted was extinguished by rain and the tower then received a lightning rod. It is crowned with a Baroque onion dome with a lantern and the tower contains a clock.

The church is single-naved with two side chapels, the chapel of the Crucified and the chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a sacristy with an oratory on the upper floor. The facade projects toward the prismatic tower, divided by pilasters with scrolled capitals and the wings of the gable are decorated with vases. Both the nave and the chancel are covered with a barrel vault with lunettes. The original structure was twenty-nine meters long.

In eighteen fifty-two the church received a new main altar and flooring. Eight years later the roof over the nave and chancel was unified. The altar image of Saint George was purchased in eighteen eighty-three. In nineteen seventy-three, the side altars of Saint Joseph and Saint John of Nepomuk from nineteen oh eight and the pulpit had to be removed due to woodworm. After renovations in nineteen ninety-two, a new altar, ambo, and tabernacle were added.

The most recent major renovation took place in twenty twelve. It cost over four point seven million crowns, mostly from European funds. It renewed the roof including the roof frame, the sanctus tower, the facade and windows, and the church received a drainage system.
