The Church of Saint Martin in Slatiňany is an originally Gothic building from the 14th century. It is first mentioned in 1350. From the same period comes a mention that the settlement was called Slatina Svaňkova, named after the local vicar Svaněk. From the medieval church, a three-sided presbytery with its original vault has been preserved.
Slatiňany experienced turbulent times. In 1469 it was burned down by Matthias Corvinus and in 1639 by the Swedes. In 1660 the current castle was founded here, and from 1677 the local estate belonged to the Auerspergs. From 1801 priests commuted from Chrudim and the parish acquired its own priest. The first vicar was Václav Sklenář. The church was repaired in 1769 and 1845.
By the end of the 19th century, the church could no longer accommodate the growing population. Prince Auersperg therefore requested plans for its expansion in 1888 from the local builder František Schmoranze. In the spring of 1891, demolition began. First the sacristy fell, so that foundations for the new tower could be dug. Then the bells were removed, the old tower was torn down and the masonry of the nave was demolished down to the triumphal arch. The nearby old school building was also demolished. The following year, mass was celebrated in the oratory because the vault and roof were still being completed. The church was consecrated on 13 November 1892. The furnishings of the interior were paid for by the parishioners through collections, and the building materials were covered by church property funds.
Schmoranze's reconstruction gave the church a romantic neo-Gothic appearance. From a single-nave building it became a three-nave hall church. The tower in the western façade is built up to the crenellations from Škrovád sandstone and topped with a brick pyramid with a stone cross. It measures 33 meters. The buttressing pillars, gable and other architectural elements are also made of sandstone. On the south side stands a two-storey oratory, on the north a sacristy.
The main entrance is formed by a portal with a pointed arch decorated with grape vine leaves. Above it is an inscription from a psalm and a circular window with stone tracery. The church originally stood alone, today it is connected to the castle by a corridor on the first floor. Since 3 May 1958 it has been protected as a cultural monument.
