The ruin of the castle lies near the church of St. Philip and James in Lelekovice, the village of the district Brno-venkov in the South Moravian Region. Although only fragments remained today, archaeological research revealed the complex history of the building and its surroundings, which goes back to prehistoric times.

The castle was founded by the lords of Lelekovice in the 14th century. His founder was most likely Olomouc judge Hereš z Lelekovic, mentioned in written sources between 1339 and 1358. The first mention of the castle itself dates back to 1358. You had a brother named Bushka, a wife named Elishka and three descendants - the sons of Yishka and Bushka and daughter of Margaret. He died during a plague epidemic in the mid-14th century.

But the next generation was no longer in bloom. Hereš's son Bushek, who married Anna first and later Jutka later, died in 1368. Then the obvious economic decline began. The benefits collected from the subjects were no longer sufficient to maintain the standard of living of the owners of the smaller estate. One of the sons of Bushek sold his first estate in 1369 and nine years later he only owned half the castle. Hermane, another member of the family, only one third left.

In the second half of the fourteenth century, other people entered the fight for property in Lelekovice. Margrave Jan Jindřech tried to acquire real estate in the years 1373 to 1375. In 1379 Mikšík, Povbor and Heřman of Lelekovice transferred their shares - the division lasted and the owners increased. Louis of Ubušín got part of the castle by marrying Eulália, widow of Vznato of Lelekovice, and gradually expanded his part. In 1387 the castle was owned by several people, among whom were Heřman of Lelekovice, Ludvik of Ubušín and married Peter and Vzdnat Hecht of Rosic. It was the Hechts who managed to get the entire castle into one possession by 1392.

But the time of peace did not last long. In 1401 the castle was occupied by opponents of Margrave Yošt. The judge Erhart ze Skal intervened against them, who hurled into the conquest with the strength of the Brno townspeople and using firearms. Archaeological findings - bomb ammunition and a lead missile - indicate the intensity of the attack. The castle was damaged in the attack, and although Erhart received it in 1412 as part of the Lelekovice estate, it was never restored. From 1447 there was a mention of Jan Dupník's tenement from Nitkovic, which was probably located in the premises of the vanguard.

Josef Unger's archaeological research revealed a site where there were no visible traces of the mansion, almost a whole castle core. Research has shown that the island was settled in prehistoric times during a culture with Moravian painted ceramics at the end of the neolithic. Among the найденé artifacts were ceramics, animal bones and stone tools which could later be used as amulets or flint stones. The analysis of animal bones showed the predominance of livestock - mainly cattle and domestic pigs - while the game accounted for only about eight percent of the meat consumed.

The remains of the castle have long been protected as a cultural monument. However, in 2020, the Ministry of Culture decided that the 1989 registration was delayed, so the monument protection ended on the last day of 1987.

The ruins of Lelekovice castle lie not far from the Church of Saint Philip and James in Lelekovice near Brno. The first written mention of the castle dates from 1358. It was founded most likely by Hereš, also called Heřman from Lelekovice, a judge from Olomouc. He is documented in the years 1339 to 1358 and died during a plague epidemic.

The castle was then held by his descendants, but the family soon began to decline economically. Payments from the peasants were not enough to maintain the living standard of the owners of smaller estates. Vznata from Lelekovice sold the first property in 1369. By 1378, only half of the castle belonged to him, and his son Heřman retained only a third.

The castle then became divided among several owners. In 1387, one third belonged to Heřman from Lelekovice. The second was held by Ludvík from Ubušína, who had acquired it through marriage to Eulália, the widow of Vznata from Lelekovice. The third was shared by Petr and Vznata Hecht from Rosice. By 1392, they managed to acquire the entire castle.

In 1401, the castle was occupied by opponents of the Margrave Jošta. The judge Erhart from Skály intervened against them and with detachments of Brno townspeople captured the castle. He used firearms, as evidenced by ammunition found for a bombard and a lead bullet from a hand gun. The castle was damaged during the capture. When Erhart acquired the Lelekovice estate in 1412, he did not rebuild it and the castle fell into ruin. A mention of a Lelekovice fortified manor from 1447 may refer to a building on the site of the former outer bailey, but it could also be a building of the parish house.

No traces of the settlement were apparent at the site of the castle. Its remains were revealed only by extensive archaeological excavation by Josef Unger, who uncovered almost the entire castle nucleus. It also became clear that people had settled on the hill fort as far back as the end of the Late Stone Age. Some prehistoric polished tools were possibly reused in the Middle Ages as so-called thunderstones with a protective function or as flint strikers.

The bones found show what was eaten at the castle. Cattle predominated with 44 percent and domestic pork with 32 percent. Game made up about 8 percent, which is more than usual. Most often it was deer.

The castle remains were protected as a cultural monument. In 2020, however, the Ministry of Culture decided that the registration from 1989 had taken place late, and the protection thus ended already at the end of 1987.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring and autumn months, when the landscape in the South Moravian Region is colorful and temperatures are pleasant for walking between ruins.

For your journey, wear footwear with a fixed sole, which is suitable for the terrain of the ruins, and plenty of drinking water, as there may be no refreshments in the immediate vicinity of the castle. For the best photos of the castle choose the time shortly before sunset, when light highlights the structure of medieval walls and the atmosphere of ruins.

With children, the visit is ideal as an adventure expedition to the Middle Ages where children can explore the remains of the walls. Within short walks around the castle we recommend visiting the church of St. Philip and James.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the castle Lelekovice comes to life thanks to the awakening nature and lush green, which gently covers stone walls. Soft spring light creates an optimistic atmosphere ideal for walking. We recommend moisture-resistant shoes, because the surrounding roads can be muddy on a defrosted ground. It is best to visit the memory in the afternoon when it is already warmer.

The summer season brings intense sun and deep shadow in the corners of ruins, creating a strong contrast between illuminated areas and dark corners. Expect more visitors in the main season, so it is advisable to come first thing in the morning to enjoy your peace. Don't forget enough fluids, a hat and light, breathable clothes.

In autumn the surroundings of the castle will be coloured in golden and brown tones that complement the melancholy character of the ruins. Morning fog and low sun give the place a mysterious and dramatic form. The practical recommendation is layered clothes for handling variable weather and solid shoes for safe movement on slippery leaves.

In winter, the ruins of Lelekovice work strictly and minimistically, especially if they are covered with a layer of snow that highlights the contours of the walls. The atmosphere is quiet and calm, with a short day and a cool light. It is essential to choose warm thermal clothing and warm shoes. Due to the shorter opening time we recommend planning a visit in the morning.
