Leopoldsruhe is a former hunting lodge in Pohořelice in the Brno-venkov district. It stands in the area of the former farmyard Velký Dvůr and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The lodge was built shortly after seventeen forty-three by Jan Leopold z Ditrichštejna, who acquired Velký Dvůr together with the purchase of the židlochovický estate. The author of the building is František Antonín Grimm. It is a baroque single-story building in the shape of the letter U with a courtyard of honor, which is enclosed by a wall and two farm buildings.
This form was completed only by a later owner. In the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Albert Sasko-Těšínský purchased the estate. He had a boundary wall built around the castle with a courtyard of honor and had a park laid out.
The castle belonged to the Habsburg-Lorraine family, most recently to Bedřich Rakousko-Těšínský, until nineteen nineteen. It was then nationalized on the basis of the Saint Germain treaty. From nineteen twenty-four it was managed by Czechoslovak state forests and estates and was inhabited by Czech employees of the nationalized Velký Dvůr. After the Second World War, the castle was taken over again by the same administration. From nineteen forty-nine, the state enterprise Czechoslovak state estates established a central training school for worker cadres in it.
Then came a period of decline. In nineteen fifty, the castle with farm buildings was entered in the register of monuments as a very valuable artistic and historical object. Already a year later, however, the estates stated that it was in very poor condition. Monument specialists found the castle unmaintained in nineteen fifty-two and poultry kept on the ground floor. The building then passed between research institutes in Pohořelice and often changed purpose. In nineteen fifty-four it served as a cultural center and for a class of an elementary school, in nineteen sixty there were apartments in it. From nineteen sixty-nine it belonged again to State Farm Pohořelice and after nineteen eighty-nine it was taken over by the state in a devastated condition.
A turning point came in two thousand and one, when the object was acquired by the Association of Foster Families. Between two thousand and two and two thousand and seven it was reconstructed at a cost of twenty-four million crowns, of which six and a half million crowns was covered by a grant from European Union funds. Since two thousand and three, the House Halfway has operated here, a social center for young people.
