Měšťanská střelnice in New Street is a unique classicist building built in 1838. It was built according to architect Anton Arch and the funding was provided by Olomouc Magistrate. The shooting gallery was first hit by the First World War and then by the First Republic. After 1918, she was no longer in fashion.

Classicism developed in Europe in the 19th century. At that time Olomouc was developing a Olomouc shooting club. In 1838, the Olomouc Shooting Association applied for permission to demolish the original building of the shooting range and for permission to build a new one. By September of that year, the new shooting range was completed and the founding charter was ceremonially signed on 19 September by the imperial prince Archduke Karl Ferdinand, the Archbishop of Olomouc and other important guests.

The shooting gallery was built according to architect Anton Arch. The funding was provided by the Olomouc Municipality. The shooting gallery was first hit by the First World War and then by the First Republic. After 1918, she was no longer in fashion. In 1938, it was sold to Ander and son Olomouc. After this sale, the place where the city's social life took place for 100 years changed its function completely.

In 1991, the shooting gallery was declared a protected object by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. It was owned by SK Olomouc at the time. After 1996 the construction moved along with another park area to Olomouc, which rented it to Ariel s.r.o. The shooting gallery was standing in a smaller park At the shooting range until 1998, when the construction hit the fire and was subsequently torn down.

The shooting gallery is remarkable with its unique architecture and historical context. Its creation is linked to the development of classicism in Europe and the development of the Olomouc Shooting Association. Its architecture is characteristic of classicism and was built according to the design of architect Anton Arch. The shooting gallery was first hit by the First World War and then by the First Republic, which changed its function. After 1918 she was no longer in fashion and was sold to Ander and son Olomouc. It was declared a protected building after 1991 and was torn down in 1998.

Today it is possible to see only the remains of the shooting range which was torn down in 1998. Her history is interesting and remarkable, and it's worth visiting.

Welcome to New Street, where you are now located in front of a unique monument building - the urban shooting range. This Classicist building will impress you with its elegant facade and historical value, which is hidden here. Look up at its symmetric lines and square windows that remind us of the time it was built.

Let's dive into the history of this building. The shooting gallery was built in 1838 according to the design of architect Anton Arch. The funding for this project came from the Olomouc Magistrate, which shows the importance and prestige of the shooting range at the time. It was created as a place for sports activities, specifically shooting, which was a common interest among the townspeople.

Note the elegant details of architecture. The facade is decorated with classical elements that give the building some seriousness and elegance. Although it may now seem like a mere facade, there were many shooting-related activities once.

Key stories associated with this building begin with the First World War. The shooting gallery was hit for the first time by war events, affecting her other fates. After 1918, when Austria-Hungary collapsed, the shooting range was no longer in fashion and began to fall into oblivion.

The interesting thing is that after several decades of neglect, the shooting range was sold to Ander and son Olomouc in 1938. After 1991, it was declared a protected object, which shows its historical and cultural value.

But now the shooting range seems like a mystery. In 1998, it was destroyed by a fire, which turned it into a ruin that you can see today. Although it no longer exists in its original form, its history and architectural elements are still resonating with everyone who looks at it.

Let us now explore the surroundings and notice other attractions of New Street. Měšťanská střelnice is just one of many stories that this part of Olomouc hides. I hope this guide inspired you to further discover and appreciate the historical monuments of our city.

Thank you for your attention and I wish you comfortable walks.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area of the building awakens to life and the fresh green gently covers the remains of the old walls. Light is soft and pleasant in this period, which gives the ruins a fresh look. I recommend you visit the place in the morning and bring a lighter jacket, because the weather is variable.

The summer months bring sharp sun and deep shadows that highlight the texture of the old stone. Plants around the shooting range are in full bloom and create an interesting picture with contrast of the ruins. The best time for a walk is a late afternoon when the air is colder and the clothes should be light and airy.

Autumn season is characterized by colorful leaves and frequent fog that make the building a mysterious object. The atmosphere is rather melancholy and calm. When visiting, it is advisable to choose waterproof shoes and come around noon to make the most daylight available.

In winter, the ruins work strictly and rigorously, especially if the walls are covered with snow or frost. The low winter sun creates long shadows and emphasizes the geometry of the building. It is necessary to dress very warm and plan the journey for the morning before the sun sets soon.
