Muzeum Cheb Museum

Muzeum Cheb is located in the Pashelbel house, on King George of Poděbrad Square in Cheb. Established as one of the oldest Czech regional museums, opened to the public on 15 May 1874. The museum focuses on Cheb's history, Albrecht von Wallenstein and the Thirty Years' War, making it an important cultural place that survived both world wars.

The origin of Muzeum Cheb returned to its premises in 1873 Georg Schmid(t), archivist and librarian. Its foundation was intended to preserve regional history at a time when the Czechs were part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and experienced significant cultural and political changes. This period meant the transition of Europe through industrialisation and the relocation of national borders.

The museum building dates back to the 14th century, originally built in Gothic style. At the beginning of the 17th century it underwent Renaissance reconstruction and reflected its historical importance as a townhouse, which over time served various roles, including a residence for city officials such as Wolf Adam and Alexander Pachelbel. The history of the building is further enriched by its connection with Albrecht von Wallenstein, who was murdered in 1634.

The museum's ownership recorded several changes, starting in the early 17th century, figures like Wolf Adam and Alexander Pachelbel. After the 30-year war, she became part of the city's property. Over time, important administrators such as Georg Schmid(t), Karl Siegl and Heribert Sturm played a decisive role in their development and preservation. During World War II, despite the challenges of Sturm's nationalist relations, efforts were made to protect valuable exhibits from the allies' bombing.

Among the key events in museum history are the fire in January 1907 which damaged part of his collection. The subsequent inventory of Karl Siegl revealed around 3,300 items, including significant acquisitions such as the Hermann Hallwich Wallenstein collection and the ethnographic collection donated by Unser Egerland. During World War II, valuable exhibits were evacuated to protect them from Allied bombing, which is proof of museum resistance.

Muzeum Cheb today stands as proof of regional history and offers exhibitions that go back to the rich past of Cheb, including its connection with Albrecht von Wallenstein and the Thirty Years War. His collections include unique artifacts such as Cheb Antepedium and Romanesque embroidery from the Clariske monastery in Cheb.
