Obchodní dům Centrum, located in the centre of Brno, is a functional construction of architect Vladimir Karfik from 1930-1931. This building is the only interwar work of Karfik in Brno and since 1988 it has been protected as a cultural monument. Originally planned as a 28-story skyscraper, it was reduced to eight floors due to unstable terrain.

It was created in a period of economic crisis and political change in the 1930's, affecting the architectural style of functionalism. This style focused on practicality and simplicity. Vladimír Karfík designed a high building with a height exceeding 100 metres, which was to be the headquarters of Bata. The planned 28 floors had to be reduced to eight due to unstable terrain.

The architecture of the Centre's department store is characteristic of functionalism, which is reflected in simple lines and glass use. Originally, the building was designed with horizontal strips of clear and white glass, which it lost in 1966 due to insensitive building modifications for the needs of the Centre Business House. These changes affected the original aesthetics of the construction.

The ownership of the department store started with Bata, which had its registered office in 1930-1931. After World War II, the house was moved and became the headquarters of the Trade House Centrum, which led to the mentioned building modifications in 1966.

There have been several interesting events related to the department store over the years. In 2008, architect Eva Jiřičná proposed the construction of an unfinished skyscraper, which was intended to build on interwar aesthetics and included apartments and green terraces. However, this proposal was not implemented because of the opposition of the Brno National Heritage Institute.

Today, the Centre is protected as a cultural monument and is worth visiting for its historical value and architectural importance. Despite changes, it remains a unique representation of functionalism in Brno, which makes the building an important place to understand the architectural and cultural heritage of the city.

Obchodní dům Centrum is a reminder of the time when architecture focused on functionality and simplicity. It is a testament to the vision of Vladimir Karfik and his efforts to create a modern building despite technical and economic constraints. Visiting this monument offers an opportunity to explore not only its history, but also the architectural principles of functionalism, which shaped many modern buildings in Europe.

Welcome to the very heart of our beautiful Brno. Stop for a moment, take a breath and look ahead. You are standing in front of a building that is a silent but very important witness to ambition, modernity and unexpected compromises from the beginning of the last century. The Obchodní dům Centrum stands before you. The first impression that radiates from this building is a sense of purity, order and complete practicality. It's a building that doesn't try to impress a visitor with unnecessary decorations, gold details or complex rhythms. Instead, it welcomes you with its form and its clear purpose. Feel its presence in urban space and try for a moment to imagine the rhythm of life in this place decades ago, when this building was a symbol of new times and progress.

Let us now look together at how this interesting building was created and in what historical context it was born. We are in the year nine hundred thirty. Then Brno was one of the most modern cities in the region, vibrating with energy and looking for its new face. It was in this atmosphere of optimism that the building of the Trade House Center under the guidance of an architect named Vladimír Karfík began. The work was very fast and already a year later, in the year nine hundred thirty one, the construction was completed. The cartel has put its vision of modern business space into this project, which would serve people while representing the technological shift of that time. What is really unique about this place is that it is the only work by Vladimir Karfik from the interwar period that still stands in Brno. This makes this building a real architectural jewel and a rare specimen of its creation in our city.

Now pay full attention to the very form of the building. Look at her facade and see the overall composition. What you see is a typical and pure manifestation of a style called functionalism. You may have met this word before, but in the context of this building, it means one fundamental thing: the form must correspond precisely to the function. Note that you will not find any useless columns, no invented ornaments, statues or decorative moldings that would simply decorate the facade without fulfilling any practical purpose. Everything here is sober, practical and purposeful. It was this simplicity of lines and cleanliness of surfaces in the 1930s that was a symbol of modern thinking and courage to respond to old habits. The building has eight floors that make up its present appearance. When you look at it, see how harmonically it fits into the surroundings, and yet it retains its own, unmistakable identity because of its geometric precision.

But the history of this place wasn't just about preserving the original lines. Every building lives, breathes and changes with the city and its inhabitants. In the year nine hundred sixty-six Obchodní dům Centrum underwent construction modifications. These changes were made in such a way that the building better served the needs of commercial operations and new ways of selling goods. Unfortunately, these interventions affected the original aesthetics that Vladimír Karfík originally intended. It is a sad but instructive reminder of how easily the author's vision can be affected when priorities move from beauty and architectural integrity to purely practical use. Yet the value of the construction was never lost. Its importance was recognised much later and in the year nine hundred and eighty eight the building was officially registered as a cultural monument. This means that the state and the city have recognised its irreplaceable importance for our history and for the overall form of the Brno Centre.

And now we come to the part that may interest you the most that makes this building almost a legend. Look up on the roof again. You see eight floors ahead. But did you know that the original plan was much, much braver? Vladimír Karfík originally designed a skyscraper. And not just a small skyscraper, but a building on 28 floors. Try to imagine for a moment. If this plan had actually been implemented, one of the highest houses of the time would have stood before you, which would have completely changed the silhouette of the Brno Centre and perhaps could have been seen from many remote parts of the city. Then why didn't it happen? The answer to that question lies deep beneath your feet, in the country itself. The terrain on which the building stands proved unstable during construction. The soil was simply unable to bear such a colossal weight of twenty-eight stories. Architect and builders had to react very quickly and drastically shorten the project, which led to the current form with eight floors. It's a fascinating story about how nature can stop even the most ambitious human dreams and make us humble.

But this incomplete and unused potential remained in the memory of many future generations of architects. Much later, in the year two thousand eight, the renowned architect Eva Jiřičná returned to the subject. She designed the completion of this unfinished skyscraper. Her vision was to build on the interwar aesthetics and finally bring Karfik's original idea to a height that he himself had planned. Even though this vision has not become a reality, it shows how strong a print this building has left in the minds of those dedicated to spatial creation. The building remains in some tension between what it is and what it could be.

Obchodní dům Centrum is therefore much more than just an ordinary place for shopping. It is a monument to courage, a symbol of modernity and a lesson of humility before the forces of nature. It's a place where practical functionalism meets an unrealized dream of a skyscraper. I hope this short trip to history has helped you see this building in a new light and that you will no longer see it as just part of an urban development, but as a fascinating story written in concrete and glass.

Now I encourage you to go around the building again slowly, feel its rhythm, observe its clean lines, and perhaps in your mind imagine the remaining twenty stories that have never seen the light of day. Try to remember how you would look down the street from this place if you were standing on the 28th floor in the year nine hundred thirty-one. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty, secrets and hidden stories of our city. When you're ready, please proceed to the next stop on your walk. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the early afternoon, when the sun illuminates the facade of the shopping centre from a street view. This moment is ideal for photos because the light does not mask the details of architecture.

When you visit, take with you suitable shoes because the street around the monument can be irregular. This will make you travel more comfortable.

For families with children, the area surrounding the shopping centre is suitable because nearby there are parks and other fun spaces. Children can enjoy free time on the playground or on walks.

In the surroundings you can visit the historical centre of Brno, which offers various cultural attractions and restaurants. There are also museums and galleries nearby, which can be an interesting addition to visiting a department store.

🏰 Prohlídka At this monument

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surrounding area of the building is revived by flourishing trees and the city is getting a fresh breath. The light is pleasantly soft in this period, which is ideal for observing the details of the construction. We recommend taking several layers of clothing because the weather can change quickly. The best is to come in the morning when the air is fresh and the movement of people is not yet so intense.

During the summer season, high temperatures are felt in urban development and the sun hits the facade very intensely. The atmosphere is very lively and busy. In order not to attract too much heat and crowds of visitors, we recommend planning the visit for early morning hours. Dress very lightly and have water in your pocket.

Autumn brings golden colour and leaves to the streets, creating a color contrast to architecture. The light is low and creates long, interesting shadows on the building. It is advisable to wear warmer overwear because evenings become colder. The best time to walk around the sights is in the afternoon when the color of the surroundings is the most beautiful.

Zimą days are short and the lights are low, which creates a quieter but gloomy atmosphere. If snow falls, the city is very quiet. It's essential to wear a proper coat, scarf and hat. In Advent time, there are more people around, and it should be assumed that the opening time may be shorter in the winter months.
