The Morový sloup, also known as the Mariánský sloup, is a baroque column situated in Brno's Freedom Square, Czech Republic. Built between 1679 and 1683, it commemorates the plague that affected the city from 1679 to 1680. This notable monument is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and five plague saints, making it a significant historical landmark in the city.

The Morový sloup was constructed during a time when the plague was a major health crisis in Europe. In the late 17th century, the plague was a widespread disease causing significant loss of life and economic disruption. The construction of the Morový sloup was a response to this crisis, built during the reign of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, who was also the ruler of Bohemia at the time.

The column was designed in the early baroque style, inspired by a similar column in Vienna. It was built using white and grey marble from the Pernštejn quarry, with the original central column replaced by a new one made of Salzburg marble in 1686. The column's head was created by Jakub Conenall between 1687 and 1688. The design features a statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus, currently replaced by a copy, as well as four statues of plague saints in the corners of the pedestal, created by Baltasar Frobel and Jan Kašpar Pröbstl in 1683.

The Morový sloup has undergone several restorations and repairs. In 1964, it was declared a cultural monument, and in 2006, it underwent a major reconstruction as part of the Freedom Square renovation. The column was restored to its original appearance and reopened on October 15, 2006, with a blessing by Bratislava bishop Vojtěch Cikrle.

Today, the Morový sloup stands as a prominent landmark in the Freedom Square, surrounded by other historical buildings and monuments. It is a significant historical and cultural site offering a glimpse into the city's past and its response to a major health crisis. Visitors can see the column and its intricate design, a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage.

Guide

Show guide text

Welcome! You are standing before one of the most significant historical landmarks in Brno. Before you stands the Moravian Column, a Baroque column built between 1679 and 1683. It is a monument commemorating the plague epidemic that struck Brno from 1679 to 1680. The monument is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and five saints who contributed to saving the city from the plague.

Let's step back into history. Construction of the column began in 1679 and was completed in 1683. In 1964, the Moravian Column was declared a cultural heritage site, and it underwent extensive reconstruction in 2006. During this reconstruction, the original statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, which was originally placed at the top of the column, was replaced.

Look up and notice the capital of the column. It was created between 1687 and 1688 by Czech sculptor Jakub Conenale. It is a masterpiece of late Baroque, characterized by delicate details and rich ornamentation. Examine the façade of the column and observe how its architecture is reflected in the lavish decoration.

Let's return to history. After all, the Moravian Column holds a special place in the heart of Brno. There were several personalities who contributed to saving the city from the plague. One of them was Ferdinand Pfaundler, who saved many lives. Another notable figure is Baltasar Frobel, who founded a hospital where many people afflicted by the plague were treated.

Notice that the Moravian Column was originally built as a monumental sculpture intended to commemorate the Siege of Vienna in 1683. It was indeed an awe-inspiring structure that became a symbol of faith and determination for the citizens of Brno.

Now, I invite you to look around and explore other historical landmarks in the vicinity. The Moravian Column is just one of many interesting places in Brno worth exploring. I hope you learned some fascinating information about this historic monument during your walk and enjoyed its atmosphere. Thank you for your attention, and we hope to see you again soon!
