The Palace of Yalta, formerly known as the Palace of Moderna, is an important functionalist building in the historical centre of Brno on the Dominican Square. The building was created between 1928 and 1929 according to the design of architect Jaroslav Polívka. It represents not only the cultural monument of the Czech Republic, but also an important contribution to the modernist heritage of the city. Originally there was a business passage, cinema and office space, which reflected the dynamics and modernization of Brno in the first half of the 20th century.

The foundation of the palace is related to the 20th years of the 20th century, when functionalism was promoted in Czechoslovakia. Jaroslav Polívka designed the building as a two-piece five-story building with purist design, typical of the architecture at the time. The palace was originally housed by the restaurant and cinema Bio Moderna, which underlined its role as a centre of urban life.

The building is characterised by its functionalist structure. Two-part construction has five floors. There were cinemas and restaurants on two lower floors, which are typical features of purism. An important element remains the business passage on the ground floor, which was crucial despite numerous changes in ownership and reconstruction.

The history of the palace was influenced by several key events. After completing in 1929 he moved to the hands of YWCA, which in the upper floors planned a hostel for women and girls. Since 1934, the building was owned by the state. After 1989, the passage went into private ownership and its operators often took turns. In 2006 the building was acquired by the city of Brno, but due to repair costs it remained empty and closed until 2016.

In 2016, Premiere properties bought the building for CZK 101 million. After extensive reconstruction by owner Richard Saliba with investment of over CZK 120 million, palác Jalta was reopened in June 2019. Modernization took place in cooperation with sightseeing specialists. The tenants could have partially modified their premises. Today, for example, the Austrian and Moroccan fee consulate, ČTK branch, law firms and American high school are located here.

Today palác Jalta serves as a living center of urban life. Its history reflects the social and economic changes of Brno through changes in ownership and use of the building. Visitors here can explore the modernist style and immerse themselves in the rich history of the city.

The Palace of Yalta forms an important part of the cultural heritage of Brno. Its presence in Dominican Square is decorated by the city centre and testifies to architectural innovations and social changes of the 20th century. Visiting this object is necessary for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of Brno over the years.

Let's dive into the past. The palace was built between 1928 and 1929 according to the design of renowned architect Jaroslav Polívka. It was a time when the city of Brno was undergoing rapid development and modernization. Originally palác Jalta was home to the cinema theatre Bio Moderna together with the business passage. This object symbolized a new era when the city opened up to modern commercial and cultural activities.

Look up at the facade of the building and notice its simple but elegant design. Functionalism is evident here in the symmetry and purity of the line. The architecture of the Yalta Palace is distinguished by its design for maximum use of space and functionality, which was typical of this architectural direction.

The architect Jaroslav Polívka is among the key personalities associated with this building. His vision transformed this place into an icon of functionalism. Richard Saliba, another historical figure, played a role in the changes that palác Jalta experienced after 1989 when the building was transferred into private hands.

The interesting thing is that after the period of neglect and decline, palác Jalta was reopened in 2019 after a comprehensive reconstruction. Today, it serves as a multifunctional space for offices, schools and even consulates, which shows its adaptability and continued importance.

Now that they have immersed themselves in the history and architecture of the Yalta Palace, we invite you to explore other parts of the Brno city. There are many other hidden pearls waiting to be discovered. Thank you for your visit and we hope you enjoyed your stay. When we meet again!
