The memorial of Victoria Kornel of All Held is an Art Nouveau piece with bronze bust, which has been standing since 1901 at the All Held Square in Chrudim. The work of academic sculptor František Rouse protects the status of the real cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The statue worships an important Chrudim native and combines sandstone elements with rich symbolism.

The work was created at the turn of the century, at the time of the blossom of the Art Nouveau and strong national confidence in Czech countries. Back then it was common to worship personalities of national renewal and history through public works of art. The author of the monument is the academic sculptor František Rouse, who revealed the object in 1901.

The whole monument is made of sandstone and bronze. The dominant feature is a sandstone semi-circular rail with benches on the consoles. It ends on the sides with square columns with tiered feet. The top of the columns is decorated with mixed chalices on conical legs, while the front sides complement deep frames with embossed reliefs. There are four rectangular fields with inscriptions on the inside of the rail above the benches.

In the middle of the railing is a prism plinth. Its front side carries a frame with an embossed relief of two shields - left decorated with eagle and a true lion in the jump. The whole motive surrounds the draperies with the lime branches. On the pedestal is placed up a narrowing conical four-sided pillar, on which lies the bronze bust of Victoria Kornel of the All Held. The portrait shows a plain, bearded face with indicated clothing.

The heel of the pillar is decorated with acantic ornament of laurel branches and writing straw. A coat of arms with the dog's cimbura emblem, a helmet with a postcard and three ostrich pens is placed above the inscription which refers to All-Hrudim as the native of Chrudim and the author of the book About the Rights of the Land of the Czech Book of Nine.

Over the years, the monument has become a place of great events. In 1920, he held a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the death of Victoria Kornel of All Held. Another important moment occurred in 1960 during the reconstruction of the monument accompanied by the exhibition and conference of legal historians.

The monument stands in the district of Chrudim on the Výhrdov Square right in front of the district court building. In 2020 he underwent a complete renovation, which makes him in perfect condition today. Integrated benches in the railing allow the object to serve as a place of urban rest.

The monument represents a valuable combination of history, law and Art Nouveau. It is a crucial stop for anyone who wants to know the great personalities of the Chrudim region.

Welcome to Chrudim. Right now, at this moment, you are standing in a place that bears the name of one of the most important men in this city. Before your eyes, there is a monumental work that combines the strength of metal and the softness of stone. Look at this bronze head that stands out from the sandstone base. It's a monument to Victor Kornel of All Held. Before we go into his deeper secrets, let yourself just breathe for a second and feel the atmosphere of this place. Can you feel the weight of history floating around? This space is not just another piece of the square, it is the vivid memory of our city, which now invites you to explore.

Now let's move on to why this monument is even standing here. This monument is not just a random work of art, but an expression of deep respect for the man who was Chrudim's birth son. Viktorin Kornel ze Všehrd was a character whose name was very important in these streets. This whole work was created by a respected academic sculptor František Rouse. When the memorial was first inaugurated in a thousand nine hundred and one, it was a moment of great pride for the city. Since then, this object has been going through many milestones. In the year of a thousand and nine hundred and twenty, there were four hundred years of his death, which showed how deeply this figure was rooted in the hearts of the local people. So the monument is not just a static object, but a few generations that passed by it.

Now pay attention to the architecture and what is right in front of you. The whole object is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau style. If you look at the shapes, you'll see that they're not just rough and straight. Art Nouveau loves organic shapes, curves and fluidity that resemble nature. Notice how the shiny bronze and matte sandstone are beautifully combined here. The bronze bust, which is the center of the work, captures the face of a man with great dignity. The sculptor Rouse was able to imprint character and strength in the metal. But don't just look up. Watch as the monument spreads wide. See that sandstone semi-circular banister? It's a very elegant element that gives the whole place a sense of closure and peace. And most importantly, this railing isn't just for decoration. It contains benches that encourage you to sit here for a while, relax and just observe the outside world. It's part of urban life, a place where history meets the daily rest of the people.

Now let's take a closer look at the foundation itself, the plinth on which the bust stands. Here is a rich symbolism that may interest you if you focus carefully on it. Notice the relief. See two shields? One of them adorns the eagle and the other a lion in the jump. These creatures are surrounded by delicate branches of lime. These markings aren't just random ornaments. Eagle and lion are symbols of strength and courage, while the lime, which is so important in our culture, gives the whole piece an organic and vivid feeling. These symbols communicate with each other and tell the story of the pride and tradition that this man represented.

You may find it interesting how the town took care of this monument over time. His journey wasn't endless. Already in the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight, this building was recognised as a real-estate cultural monument of our country, which means that its protection is a priority. In the year one thousand nine hundred sixty a correction was carried out and in the year two thousand twenty a complete and comprehensive renovation took place. Thanks to this care, today you can see the monument in its today's beautiful form. It is proof that although time passes, we as a society are trying to keep our history for future generations.

Notice the interesting thing about how this monument became part of everyday life. While it is a high art created by an academic sculptor, thanks to these sandstone benches it became a meeting place. It's not just an object you're looking at from a distance, it's a place you can physically use, where you can sit down and become part of this space. This is very rare in modern urban life - having such a connecting point between great history and simple human rest.

I hope that this brief view of the work of František Rousea and the life of Viktor Kornel of All Held enriched you and allowed you to see this monument a little bit differently than you may have seen in a quick passage around. Don't forget to sit on one of those benches again and just be in the presence of this beautiful place. Chrudim has many other secrets and beautiful places waiting for you. I wish you a pleasant walk and another beautiful discovery of our historical treasures. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the monument surrounds the waking green and fresh air. The soft spring light highlights the details of the statue and the space makes it fresh. We recommend dressing up in layers because the weather is usually variable, and come in the morning when the monument is quiet.

The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors of surrounding nature. The atmosphere is full of energy and heat, which gives the place a dynamic feel. Due to the greatest number of visitors and heat, it is best to visit the place early in the morning in light, breathable clothes.

Autumn fills the space with golden leaves and misty wounds, creating a nostalgic and calm mood. The walks are most pleasant in the afternoon golden hour, when the light falls at an angle. Don't forget your waterproof jacket or umbrella.

In winter, the monument is very sober and majestic, especially if the landscape is covered with snow. The contrast of the white surroundings and the material of the monument is fascinating. It is necessary to have warm shoes and gloves, while planning a visit to the short daylight.
