Prelatura v Ostrovačicích is located in the northern part of the village, in the immediate vicinity of the church of St. John the Baptist and St. Wenceslas in the district of Brno-venkov. The one-storey building with attached chapel is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and forms a harmonious architectural complex together with the adjacent rectory.

Ostrovačice has been in the property of benedictors since the Middle Ages. The first documentary proof of their connection to the local parish dates back to 1255, when the abbot Martin I was documented as the patron saint of the church. Although the islanders' goods were stopped in the middle of the 15th century and in the early 17th century, they always returned to the hands of the Order. Since the second quarter of the 17th century, the parish managed the benedictini from a nearby monastery in Rajhrad as its administrators.

The breaking point needed security. During the Ottoman wars and the Hungarian uprising, the monks repeatedly resorted to Ostrovacice. For the first time in 1683, when they were afraid of Polish troops dragging to the aid of the besieged Vienna, then from 1703 to 1704 in escape from Kurucs and probably also in 1707. It is this experience that has led to the decision to build its own seat here. In the years 1723 and 1724 a one-storey residence with chapel was established, which was added to the back of the rectory, which increased the area to the ground plan of the letter L. Construction was implemented by František Benedikt Klíčník. The original plans were ordered by the Rahrad Probost Anton Pirmus in 1718; Their author was presumed to be according to the earlier interpretation of Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, according to a recent analysis rather Christian Alexander Oedtl - the originals have not been preserved.

The residence served not only as a refuge but also as a residence of the administrator or economic inspector of the island farm. In the 18th century Ostrovačice became a pilgrimage place by Papa Klement IX. called indulgences. It was also taken care of by the lay brotherhood. In 1765 the building was expanded and the interiors were renovated; The work was led by the masonry master Matyas Jednej from Moravian Krumlov, whose signature bears preserved plans. Further maintenance took place in 1849.

Architectural property is preserved in surprisingly good quality. In the common rooms are visible Baroque wall paintings depicting the allegory of the Creation of the World and the wisdom of God. The chapel kept its decorative wall paintings, a niche with a stone altar menza and remnants of the cancelled altar. The long neglect culminated in 2007 in an emergency, but in 2016, the church began a gradual reconstruction of the interiors, which is ongoing until now.

Visiting Ostrovačice means not only seeing a modest but cultured structure, but penetrating deep into the history of local piety, faith in the distinctive role of monks and their influence on the landscape they inhabited.

The prelature in Ostrovačice stands next to the local church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Wenceslaus. Together with the adjacent rectory, it is protected as a cultural monument.

Ostrovačice had belonged to the Benedictines since the Middle Ages. Already in 1255, the abbess Martin I from Břevnov is documented here as the patron of the church. In the years 1469 and 1619, the Ostrovačice property was pawned, but each time it returned to the ownership of the order. From the second quarter of the 17th century, monks from the Benedictine monastery in Rajhrad managed the local rectory.

The rectory soon served them as a refuge as well. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, they retreated here several times when the monastery faced danger. The first time in 1683, when they feared Polish troops marching to help Vienna besieged by the Turks. Again in the years 1703 and 1704, they fled from the Kuruc forces and possibly also in 1707. Therefore, in the years 1723 and 1724, the Benedictines had a single-storey residence with a chapel built for themselves, namely the prelature. It adjoins the rear part of the rectory, so the entire complex has an L-shaped floor plan. A monk who served as the economic inspector of the Ostrovačice estate also lived in it.

The original plans were commissioned in 1718 by the Rajhrad provost Anton Pirmus. The older hypothesis attributed them to Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, but according to Antonín Jirka's analysis, they were created by Christian Alexander Oedtl. The plans have not survived. The small château itself was designed and built by František Benedikt Klíčník.

In the 18th century, the importance of Ostrovačice as a pilgrimage site grew, which Pope Clement the Ninth rewarded with indulgences. A lay brotherhood that cared for the church was also headquartered here. In 1765, the residence was expanded and undoubtedly the interiors were also renovated. During this reconstruction, the mason Matyáš Jednuška from Moravský Krumlov worked here, whose signature is borne by the preserved plans. Another repair of the château came in 1849. Later, the building served only functional purposes and in 2007 its condition was critical.

In the common rooms, however, Baroque wall paintings with allegories of the Creation of the World and Divine Wisdom have been preserved. In the chapel, decorative wall painting remained, as well as a niche with a stone altar table and decorations from a demolished altar. Between 2016 and 2021, the church undertook their restoration.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during sunny days in spring or summer months, when you will best see the Baroque exterior of the building. Due to the ongoing reconstruction, we recommend monitoring of official information channels to make sure the object is accessible to the public.

It is ideal to photograph the Baroque architecture of the prelature in the morning, which highlights the details of the facade. We recommend that you bring quality footwear suitable for movement around the building, where the terrain can be uneven as a result of reconstruction work.

In the immediate vicinity of the prelatura is the church of St. John the Baptist and St. Wenceslas, which forms an historically important whole with its residence. Walk around the village Ostrovačice offers a peaceful atmosphere of South Moravian countryside.

We recommend families with children to join the visit with a light walk around the village. Due to the ongoing reconstruction, care for the safety of children near the construction site and follow all safety instructions marked around the monument.
