Sloup se sochou Panny Marie v Bělé pod Bezdězem Marian column
Sloup se sochou Panny Marie v Bělé pod Bezdězem is a Baroque Marian memorial from 1681. It stands in a park on Masaryk Square in the district of Mladá Bbold. It was created as a thank you for saving the city from a plague epidemic and forming a major sacral dominant area.
Count Arnošt Josef z Valdštejna had the monument built in 1681. It was an impressive gift from the time of Baroque renewal and the strong influence of the Catholic Church. At that time, it was common for European cities to express their gratitude for the end of the plague by building Marian columns.
The building is on a stone staircase, which, after modifications from 2012, forms four stages. There is a square prism base with four inscription mirrors. The column has a profiled foot, a smooth blade and a pseudo-Corinthian warhead. On the top there is a statue of the Virgin Mary in contrast, located on its own four-sided pedestal. The figure's hands are tied and her head is framed by a gilded halo with stars.
In 1739, the administrator of the Belan parish Adam Schöppel had the statue polychrome and built a balustrad around the column, but it was not preserved. Another renovation took place in 1843 and 1864 when the statue was gilded. In 1908 further repairs were carried out with the cost of Dean Václav Španihel. Back then, the statue, the head and the heel were gilded and the inscriptions on the mirrors were restored. In 1931, the monument was repaired by a load of Archdeacon Frant. Seraf. Srcha. The work was done by the local sculptor Antonín Pokorný, who modified two inscriptions on the pedestal, including text in the facade and year of reconstruction.
A major change was the extensive reconstruction of 2008. The original Baroque statue was taken and stored in the lobby of the Belan Town Hall. At the top of the column they placed a faithful copy from the workshop Tomáš Vondruska. In 2012 the paving was restored around the monument and the stone staircase was changed.
The work is now accessible to all visitors in the centre of Bělá pod Bezdězem. It represents valuable evidence of baroque faith and historical events in the region. We recommend visiting the Masaryk Square and viewing this building with the original statue in the Town Hall building.

Tips for visitors
The best time to visit this baroque Marian pillar is spring and autumn days when the weather is welcoming and the trees in the park in Masaryk Square are picking up colors. The morning clock is ideal for a quiet tour without crowds, while the afternoon light can provide warm tones.
Transport to Belá pod Bezdez is ensured both by car and public transport.
For a comfortable walk around the park in Masaryk Square, take your comfortable shoes with you on a solid sole, because the surface can be uneven at times. We recommend taking water and a light snack if you plan a longer stay in the area.
For photography, the column with the statue of Our Lady is the most striking in the morning or evening, when the shadows are not so sharp and the colours of both the statue and the stone work finely. Try different viewing angles from different sides of the base to capture details of reliefs and inscriptions. Watch out for reflections from surrounding buildings that may disturb the images, and try to take pictures when there is no direct sunlight on the column if you want to keep the details of the shadows.
In the immediate vicinity of the column is located the Masaryk Square and the building of the local town hall, which form the historical core of the city. These locations are ideal for a short walk and get acquainted with the architecture of the city. For families with children, the park in the square is suitable for a short stay where children can enjoy the free space while parents admire the memory. It is important to ensure the safety of children near the road and to follow the rules of conduct in the park.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the monument is surrounded by awakening nature and fresh greenery. The soft morning light will highlight the details of the statue and the overall atmosphere feels hopeful. I recommend wearing layered clothes because spring weather is very variable. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.
The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors surrounding the countryside. The atmosphere is warm and bright days make the place a shining point in space. In the main summer season, choose light and breathable clothes and don't forget the sun protection. In order not to burn you, visit the memory rather in the late afternoon.
In autumn, the surroundings are colored in gold and red tones, creating a melancholy mood. Frequent fog gives columns a mysterious look and reduces ambient noise. It is advisable to wear a waterproof jacket and solid shoes in a damp lawn. For the best visual impression, I recommend time shortly before sunset.
In winter, the statue may look very noble, especially if it is covered by a layer of snow. The contrast of white rainfall and stone seems calm and clean, while frost gives the place rigor. Don't forget the warm gloves, the hat and the thermobra. In advent time, it is best to come before dark so that the monument is still well visible.
