The Baroque statue of St. John Nepomuk stands on the way to St. Martin's Church in Lower Skorošice in Jesenick. This work from the first third of the 18th century is an important proof of regional sacral creation and has been on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic since 2014.

The creation of the statue falls into the period of the high Baroque, when intensive sacral construction took place in Czech countries. Jan Nepomucký became one of the most revered saints at the time, and its portrayal was commonly found in urban and rural landscapes. The author of the work remains unknown. The original plinth with a carved date of origin was not preserved, which makes it more difficult to determine the age.

The building is carved out of the Klad rough grain sandstone and represents a typical baroque sculpture work. The saint in the traditional canovice garment stands in contrast. In his left hand he holds the cross with the crucified leaning against his shoulder while holding the biret at the right side. His right hand is attached to his chest. The head of the saint is decorated with a metal ray nimbus painted in yellow. The current base in the shape of a chamber needle is lined with concrete and bricks and ends with granite plate.

Originally, the statue stood in the middle of the Lower Skorošice. A major change took place in 1833, when it was moved to the current road station after the fire of the old church. In modern history, the monument went through restoration in 2005, which ensured its preservation.

Thanks to its historical value and artistic representation, the statue of 2014 was declared a cultural monument. Today, it is freely accessible to visitors headed for St. Martin's Church. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to explore the Baroque tradition that has shaped the Czech landscape for centuries.

Welcome to the road that will guide you through the history of this place. You're standing in front of one of the most important things you can see here. Before your eyes is the statue of St. John Nepomuk, the silent and serious guardian of this journey. Please feel the atmosphere of this place where history joins every stone detail and where time has stopped to tell you its story. This statue is not just an artwork, it is a witness to events that have shaped the lives of people in the Lower Skorošice for centuries.

Let us now look together at the work itself and understand its origin. This Baroque statue dates back to the first third of the eighteenth century. Even though we no longer know the name of the artist who carved it, his championship is evident in every move and every detail. The statue was made from a Klad rough-grained sandstone. If you look at her closely, you might notice her extraordinary texture. This material is not as smooth as marble, but it has some roughness and depth that gives it a sense of weight and unwavering. Every grain of this sandstone carries a trace of the time and natural forces that have played with it for hundreds of years.

Now pay attention to the figure itself. Look how it's shown. He is wearing traditional canoe clothing, which refers to his high status and spiritual role. Note the details of his clothes, which carry the spirit of Baroque - dynamics and richness of shapes. In his left hand, he holds firmly and respectfully a cross that is a symbol of his faith and sacrifice. If you raise your eyes higher, you'll see a metal nimbus on his head. This radiant element around the saint's head gives the whole figure nobility and brightness. The metal nimbus reflects from the light and creates a kind of glow around the holy head that distinguishes it from ordinary people and reminds it of its sanctity.

Look down now, on the foundation on which the statue stands. You may find his resemblance unusual. The current base is built from concrete and bricks and ends with a solid granite plate. It is a robust and firm foundation that today protects this precious work. However, it is important to know that this base is not original. Unfortunately, the original foundation on which the statue stood after its creation has not been preserved over the centuries. On that old pedestal was once carved the year of its creation, but this information was lost in the falls of time. Today, it's one of those little mysteries that stays in this place.

And this is where we touch one of the most important events in the history of this place. So why is the statue standing right here, by the road, on the access road to St. Martin's Church? The answer lies in the tragic past. In the year one thousand eight hundred thirty-three something happened that shook the whole village. The old church in Lower Skorošice burned down. This event was a great test for the local community. In order to preserve the statue of St. John Nepomuk and remain in the eyes of the people, this year it was moved to its present place by the road. This change of place was a necessary step to protect this valuable treasure from danger, while at the same time making the statue continue to serve as spiritual vodka for anyone who walks the way to the temple.

This statue has undergone many changes in the New Testament so that it can remain as good as you see it right now. In the year two thousand and five, the statue was carefully restored. Thanks to this work, its features and material have been preserved. Its importance for our region was so great that in the year two thousand fourteen it was officially declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This is proof that even such a small object can be of enormous value to the whole country.

Looking at the statue, you can realize how fragile what we consider eternal is. Sandstone can be subject to wind and rain, metals can oxidize and buildings can burn. Yet here Jan Nepomucký stands, still the same in his face, still the same in his silent narrative. It's a fascinating contrast between the fleeting of human life and the durability of art and faith.

Now that you know the story of this saint and his journey to the present place, I suggest you continue. The statue will accompany you quietly on your way to St. Martin's Church. Please feel the beauty of the surroundings and try to feel in every step the connection with the history that has just surrounded you. I hope this brief view of the statue of St. John has brought you new thoughts and peace. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a beautiful and inspiring walk. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or during the golden watch before sunset, when soft light beautifully depicts the Baroque details of the statue and highlights the structure of the stone. Take your comfortable shoes to move in the field and the camera with you, with the best pictures taken from a mild ceiling to excel the silhouette of a saint against the sky or surrounding greenery. In the immediate surroundings, do not miss a tour of St. Martin's Church in Lower Skorošice, which is a historical whole. For families with children, the place is suitable as a stop when walking through villages, with open space making movement safe even for smaller visitors who can discover details of sculpture work in a quiet environment.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring nature awakens around the statue and the surroundings are colored in fresh green. Light is soft and pleasant in this period, which creates a calm atmosphere. I recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning temperatures may still be low. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is fresh and there are not too many people around.

Summer: It is very sunny in the summer months and the surrounding green is in full bloom. The atmosphere is warm, but due to the high temperatures, it can be hot at the sight of the monument. To avoid the biggest crowds and hot sun, come early in the morning. Don't forget light clothes, headgear and plenty of water.

Autumn: Autumn season offers beautiful golden shades of leaves and often foggy morning, which gives the statue a mysterious form. The light is low at this time and very interesting to observe small things. Prepare a waterproof jacket and shoes suitable for moisture, because the soil can be muddy. An ideal visit in the afternoon is when the sun creates long shadows.

Winter: Zimą makes the monument very peaceful and lonely, especially if the landscape is covered with snow or freeze. The atmosphere is cold and raw, which highlights the historical appearance of the statue. It is necessary to wear very warm clothes and protect yourself from the wind. Given the short days, it is best to arrive around noon to use the maximum amount of daylight.
