Stará radnice v Kostelci nad Orlicí is a classical corner building in Palacký Square, originally founded as a Renaissance house from 1574. This object is characterized by layered architecture and a distinctive clock tower, which represents the development of civil architecture in the local community.

The building was originally a Renaissance township house from the 16th century, which corresponded to the flowering of civil architecture in Czech cities. In the 17th century it underwent a Baroque reconstruction during which the clock tower was built in 1694.

The current appearance of the town hall is the result of a classical adjustment from 1810 to 1824 which reflected the then European trends towards order and ancient patterns. The single-storey building has a L-shaped floor plan and is closed by a saddle roof. The facade, which looks into the square and Tyršova Street, is decorated with lisenas, while the windows on the ground floor and on the floor share a common shampoo.

The south facade has a wide stone portal on the ground floor and a balcony with cast iron railing on the floor. Above the combined window on the floor there is a triangular tympanone with embossed cartouche which shows a coat of arms with the motive of a two-tail lion with a crown. The most striking element is the prism clock tower with roof made of valbic roof, lantern with high cone and poppy.

The building has served various purposes over the years. Apart from the city hall, she was once a museum. Currently there is a basic art school.

On the facade is a commemorative plate with bust of Baroque composer František Ignác Antonín Tůma.

The Old Town Hall is a valuable witness to architectural developments from the Renaissance to Classicism. Her visit offers a view of the history of the Church of Orlici.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Old Town Hall in Kostelec nad Orlicí are spring and autumn months when the weather is welcoming for a walk along Palacky Square and surrounding streets. There are also fewer tourists at these times, which allows a more peaceful tour of the historical core of the city and better images without crowds. Summer days may be hot, so it is advisable to plan a visit for morning or evening hours.

Public transport is the city well available, the current connections and times of departure check out in online timetables search.

When you visit, bring comfortable shoes, because historic paving cubes and the inequality of the square can be difficult on your feet. We also recommend having drinking water and a light snack if you plan a longer walk around the city. Since this is an outdoor monument, it is advisable to dress according to current weather and have an umbrella or sunglasses at hand.

The Old Town Hall is ideal for photography thanks to its corner position in Palacky Square. The best light for façade images is in the morning, when the sun lights the building from the side and highlights the details of Renaissance, Baroque and classical construction. Also try the views from opposite side of the square where the overall context of the building can be captured in the historical environment. Pay attention to the details of the window frame and roof elements that reveal building changes over centuries.

Since there are no specific places in the area in the background, we recommend to walk through the historical core of Kostelce nad Orlicí after visiting the town hall. The city offers a quiet atmosphere and other architectural monuments that are easily accessible by foot. For families with children, Palacký Square is a safe and welcoming area where children can freely run and explore the surroundings. We recommend that we check in advance whether the town hall is open for internal inspections or accessible only from the outside and adjust the length of the visit accordingly.
