The Sun House, also known as Old Rathaus, is a one-storey city house in the village Staré Město. From 1540 to 1650 he served as a town hall. The building combines Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist elements and is part of the City Heritage Reserve. The building is located on the west corner of Valdštejn Square no. 33 in the direction of Chelsea Street.

The oldest preserved parts are Gothic cellars with half-circle portals. Based on the building mass, it is possible to demonstrate the Renaissance origin of the house in the second half of the 16th century. During this period, Central Europe experienced the boom of the city administration, which corresponds to the function of the building as the town hall. The first repairs took place before the 17th century in the house.

The building has two floors above ground. The main facade is headed for the square. It dominates it with three arches of cross arches and half-circle arcades with flat champagne archivolt. The ground floor of the first floor is visually separated by a roof cordon ledge. The floor is broken by four Ionian pilasters carrying sections while the windows have flat parapet sections with rosettes. The entrance to the house consists of a Gothic-Renaissance portal with an early baroque door.

The interior of the hall and the side rooms on the right have a valence vault with lunettes. The rear tract of the building contains a half-vaulted vault and a well-arched corridor, while the ceilings on the floor are flat. The Valb roof with a ridge parallel to Chelsea Street was constructed after 1810. The south facade to Chelsea Street is not architecturally divided and shows classicist windows. The north side of the side wing ends with a rectangular Renaissance portal from the barefoot wall.

The fate of the building was marked by fires in the 18th century. After the fire in 1768, the town hall was significantly modified in the Baroque style and the original facade was built around 1770. After further fires at the end of the 18th century, the contemporary classical facade was created, reflecting the architectural trends of the Enlightenment period.

In 1962 the facade was modified and a new roof cover was laid. Between 2007 and 2008, two windows were renovated on the ground floor towards Chelsea Street, which was used as a shop window. Within these works were made local repairs and new paint facade.

The Sun House is today registered as a cultural landmark. It represents a valuable architectural record of layering various epoch within one object. Her visit allows you to perceive the transformation of urban architecture from goth to classicism.

Welcome to Old Town. You've just stopped at a place that carries deep calm and exciting stories of the past. You are standing right in front of one of the most interesting building buildings in this part of town, which is popular known as the Sun House. Although at first glance it may seem to be a simple single-storey house, its presence here is of enormous importance. Feel the atmosphere of the historic space where every wall edge and every roof line seem to tell about ancient times. This house is not just a part of the street, it's a living witness to the changes your city has been through for centuries. Look at him and try to imagine what he looked like when he was the heart of the local government.

Let's go back deep into the past together to understand why this house is so special. This object wasn't always just a public house. Between 1540 and 1650, the town hall was based here. Imagine the time when important things were being decided here for the whole community, when local officials were meeting here and where the fate of this place was formed. It was the real center of the universe for the people of the Old Town. Since 1540, there have been events that have shaped the lifestyle of people in the region for many decades. Although time was constantly spinning and the world around it was changing, this house remained a fixed point that served as a symbol of local power and governance.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and what you see right in front of you. This house is like a fascinating book that has been constantly rewritten over the centuries. If you look at its present appearance, you will see an incredible mixture of different architectural styles that have intertwined here into one whole. It is a fascinating combination of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and classical elements. Note above all the arch, which is one of the most distinctive features of this building. If you look closely at it, you can see the vault in its structure. These vaults create a beautiful and rhythmic space that gives the house its historical depth. Now look at the very front of the building. What you're seeing right now is the result of a classic style that gives him his present, balanced face. It's this style that dominates your view from the street.

The history of this house, however, was not always about peaceful duration. We have to take into account that the building has undergone dramatic moments that have fundamentally changed its appearance. There was a devastating fire in 1768. Imagine the moment the fire attacked this building and everything that was in the house at the time was in danger. However, this fire was not the end, but rather the beginning of a new chapter. After this tragic event, the building was significantly modified and gained its baroque features. It is thanks to this restoration that the house has acquired its new form, which carries the elegance and change that the time required. Over the next few years, the building was further carefully maintained. In 1962 there was an important adjustment of the facade and a new roof cover was laid, which ensured the protection of the whole building. And in 2008, another important work was completed, when windows were reconstructed on the ground floor and a new coat of façade was made, making the house look as clean and clear as you see it right now.

You might wonder who built this house or who lived in it. Although history has not given us the names of particular architects or the names of significant personalities that would be directly connected to this house, we can keep them in our minds. We can imagine the craftsmen who worked for the Gothic parts centuries ago, or the people who, after a fire in the eighteenth century, were hoping to rebuild their town hall. Even though the names remain forgotten, their work here is still alive and tangible.

The interesting thing that may interest you is how much this house is under its current form. The oldest and oldest preserved parts of this building are not visible parts that you see from the street, but Gothic cellars. These cellars are part of the foundations and are characterized by their scuttled semi-circular portals. It is a fascinating idea that beneath your feet, in the depths of the earth, the oldest parts that have seen the first inhabitants of this city still exist. So this house is like an iceberg, where only a small part of its history is visible on the surface, while the oldest and strongest is hidden deep beneath it. The entire building is today protected as a cultural real estate monument and is a solid part of the City Heritage Reserve, which means that its beauty and history will be protected for future generations.

Now you can continue your journey along the Old Town. Every other alley you take can offer you a similar sense of connection to the past. I hope you get this short look at the house At the sun helped better understand the soul of this place and that you enjoy the rest of your walk. I wish you many other wonderful experiences in discovering the secrets of this city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning when the sun illuminates the façade of the Sun House and highlights its Gothic elements. There are also fewer people in these classes and you can enjoy the architecture.

You can easily walk to the memory or use public transport. Check the current connection in the search engine.

We recommend taking drinking water and comfortable shoes for walking on historic alleys. It is advisable for families with children to prepare small tasks related to finding historical details on the building, which will keep children attentive.

For the best photos we recommend looking at the building from the opposite side to see the whole height. Soft light just after sunrise or before sunset gives gothic elements a beautiful depth.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the building shines in fine light and the surrounding streets awaken to life. Nature is beginning to bloom around here, which gives the place a fresh touch. We recommend wearing more layers of clothing because the weather is variable. The best is to arrive in the morning, when crowds of visitors are still mild.

The summer season brings a sharp sun and a noisy, energetic atmosphere. The facade of the house in full brightness looks very distinctive. Due to a large number of people, it is advisable to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid long fronts. Do not avoid light summer substances and do not forget enough water.

The autumn is dominated by the golden colour of leaves and frequent fog that give the monument a mysterious look. Light is softer and shadows deeper, which is ideal for observing the details of architecture. It is practical to carry a waterproof coat and visit a place in the afternoon when it is quieter in the streets.

In winter the town hall is cozy, especially when the surrounding area is covered with snow and the days are short. The atmosphere in advent time is extraordinary and magical. It's essential to have warm shoes and a fat sweater.
