Synagoga v Brandýse nad Labem, often called Brandej, is located on the street Na Potoce no. 140 in the old city heart. This classicist object, also known under the German name Brandeis an der Elbe, and Hebrew or Yiddish, that is an important historical monument. Originally, it served as a prayer space, later it was converted into a warehouse and has now undergone extensive revitalization.

The building was built in 1827-1829 on the site of the earlier synagogue destroyed by the fire of the same year. During the construction of the new building, the older foundations and the surrounding masonry were partially preserved. In addition to the prayer hall, the building served for other needs of the community, including the rabbi's apartment and school class.

Architecturally, the synagogue is classical with empirical elements. The prayer hall is surrounded by a two-story women's gallery on three sides. The interior is a preserved Baroque shrine from the 18th century. Originally, the bima was located in the middle of the hall, but was moved to the railing at the east wall at the end of the 19th century. The archaeological survey also revealed the foundations of an older oval gallery.

After the Holocaust, which led to the demise of the local Jewish village, the synagogue after World War II was converted into a drug warehouse in 1962. This transformation involved the demolishing of wooden galleries and overpatting of cargo elevator installations.

In 1995 the synagogue became the property of the Jewish village Prague, which used it as a depository for the Jewish Museum. It was selected for project Ten Stars - Revitalization of Jewish monuments in the Czech Republic and between 2010 and 2014 was renovated in the amount of CZK 25 307 000, financed from the European Union.

Today the synagogue is operated by the Federation of Jewish Communes in the Czech Republic. It was ceremoniously reopened on 10 July 2014 and the following day the first service from the Holocaust took place here. There is an exhibition of the sources of Judaism: Rabbi writing. Although the Jewish community no longer exists in Brandýse nad Labem, its location near Prague allows sporadic worship for believers from Prague and abroad. There is also a Jewish cemetery nearby.

Synagoga v Brandýse nad Labem is key to understanding the history of Jewish heritage in the region, offers insight into the rabbi tradition and represents a renewed monument that has once again become part of active space.

Welcome. You're standing in front of a building that's much more than just a set of walls and roofs. Before you is the synagogue in Brandýs nad Labem, a place that carries traces of many destinies, periods of silence and moments of deep faith. Feel this atmosphere. Can you feel the weight of history floating in the surrounding space? This building is not only a witness to the past, but also a symbol of incredible endurance and ability to be reborn, even though everything seemed to be lost.

Let us now return to the time when everything began to be built in this place. Imagine the fatal year of 1827. That's when the tragic drama took place in this place when the fire destroyed the previous synagogue that stood here. It was a huge blow to the local community, a loss of the heart of their lives together. But human will was stronger than flames. In 1829, the new synagogue was completed. This building wasn't just built as a place for ritual prayers. It was a living part of everyday life. Because there was much more to it than you could at first glance admit. In addition to the prayer hall, a rabbi found his home here and in other rooms there was a school class. It was a place where the sacred was connected to the everyday, where new generations were raised and traditions were maintained that shaped the identity of the whole neighborhood.

Now pay attention to the construction itself that you are currently observing. Although at first glance the building may appear to be a unified appearance, its face is the result of many layers of time. When you look at her appearance, you realize that what you see has undergone a fundamental transformation. Over the years, her character changed according to the needs of the time. If you are now looking at its facade and its overall structure, see in them the reflection of the great revitalization that took place between 2010 and 2014. It was thanks to these extensive works that the building was able to restore its original dignity and meaning. Before, in the period after World War II, this building was almost unrecognizable. In 1962, a major reconstruction took place because the building was then used as a medical warehouse. Imagine the contrast - the place where prayers and children's voices used to be heard has become a storage space. This functional change led to significant architectural modifications that left a mark on the building. So what you see today is the result of a long process of searching for the original spirit of this place.

Now let's move on to a story that may be the most dramatic point in the history of this object. As I mentioned before, the era of medicine storage was a very difficult time for the synagogue. The loss of her original sanctified character was a deep blow. However, hope returned again in 1995, when the building was acquired by the Jewish village Prague. It was a turning point that set off the road to recovery. After years of effort, repairs and careful restoration, 2014 was marked with a solemn reopening. The synagogue returned home to the role it was created for.

If you decide to enter, prepare to meet something absolutely extraordinary. Even though the building has undergone so many reconstructions, within it lies a real treasure that has endured even the darkest times. It's a preserved Baroque shrine dating back to the eighteenth century. It's a fascinating detail that will immediately take you to another era. Imagine the beauty and spiritual power that this space radiates, even though the world was changing around it, burning and building again. This shrine is like a silent witness to an earlier history that can resist all storms.

Something that might really interest you in your search is the invisible power of this place. Think about how the building was able to transform from the place of prayer through a practical warehouse back to the spiritual center. There is a mystery - how did it preserve the essence, even if its external form was changing? The invisible continuity, the constant presence of history, is what makes this synagogue so special.

But I will no longer hold you back. I suggest you continue your search and be carried away by the atmosphere of these spaces. Take a look at the details that allow you to better understand the work of those who have decided to save this memory. Come in, feel the peace and quiet that prevails here, and let them tell you stories that wonder keep whispering. Thank you for your journey and I wish you a pleasant encounter with the history of Brandýs nad Labem.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Brandýse nad Labem brings to the synagogue a fine, bright light that reflects from freshly restored windows and underlines the historical details of the building. The first flowers bloom in the surrounding parks, creating a pleasant background for photography and a peaceful walk. We recommend arriving early in the morning when there is an even smaller visitor current and temperatures are pleasantly cold - light jacket or sweater will make you comfortable.

The summer days in Brandýsa are sunny and warm, which underlines the rich color of the stone facade of the synagogue and creates contrast with the blue sky. Green greenery spread in the surrounding area and the trees cast cool shadows, which is ideal for relaxing after a tour. In the main summer season the visitor's interest increases, therefore it is best to arrive right after opening, most often around eight in the morning, and avoid afternoon crowds. We recommend comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a light hat; If you are planning a longer stay, take a bottle of water with you because the indoor areas can be hot at noon.

The autumn atmosphere around the synagogue is coloured with golden leaves and slightly colder air, which underlines the quiet elegance of the historical object. The weaker sunlight creates soft shadows, which is excellent for detailed inspections of interiors and architectural elements. In this period the visitor traffic is already less intense, so you can schedule an afternoon visit around the 13th hour and have enough time to look around. Suitable is layered clothing - sweater under light jacket - and firm shoes, because the leaves can be slippery on the sidewalks.

The winter season brings a quiet, almost meditative character to synagogue, where snow covers the roof and surrounding gardens, creating a romantic contrast to stone walls. Shorter daylight and cooler temperatures underline the historic atmosphere and allow you to focus on interior decoration without disturbing external stimuli. Dress warm - thick coat, scarf, gloves and waterproof shoes - and prepare for possible waiting in line that may be shorter, but still requires patience.
