Usedlost čp. 8 (Kouty) Homestead
Residence No. 8 in the municipality of Kouty u Poděbrad in the district Nymburk is a rural area from the first half of the 19th century. It represents a unique document of the masonry of folk architecture in the region. It consists of a residential building, entrance gates with a goal, a hoarder and a shed. Since 10 February 1987 the entire complex has been registered as a cultural monument.
The construction was created during the development of the wall of folk architecture in Czech countries. The combination of practical grafted structures with representative brick elements was typical, which is also evident in this object.
The residential building with a half-wall roof is on the northwest side of the complex. Its north-facing facade breaks the plinth and rustic in corners. Under the asymmetrical trapezoid shield there is a ledge and two segmented windows with mortar vaults. Directly in the shield are placed two smaller windows with serrated frames. The east side of the skylight has remained grafted and the ceiling beams are protruding above the threshold.
A significant element is the entrance gate arched with a valence arch with a mortar frame and a distinctive jeweler. In the base of the arc are visible four-sided warheads. Pilasters are used on the sides with Roman warheads and a foxhole motif. Esviciously bent wings with ledge ends in volutes. Above the large wooden doors, which have the upper part of the plank folded radially in the shape of flames, there is a stucco-raised mirror with a trimmed edge. Between the gate and the house, the clutch is formed by a gate with a rectangular frame and a profiled ledge which is wound in volute above the entrance. Both buildings are covered with overalls and painted with white and wine paint. This is evidenced by the use of baroque sculptures in folk construction.
The area also includes a shouchar situated east of the house and the gate. Colna, which is part of the farm, was later adapted to the garage. Originally, the farmhouse belonged to the stables, but they disappeared during the 20th century.
The estate No. 8 is a valuable testament to the farm management and construction art of the 19th century. The preserved details make it an important target for anyone interested in regional folk architecture.

Welcome to the village Kouty near Poděbrad. Right now, you're standing in front of House Number Eight, which is the real jewel of the local countryside. When you look around you like this, you will see an area in front of you that will immediately transfer you to a time when the rhythm of life was determined by the earth and each building had a clear purpose. In front of you is a set of buildings that form a harmonious whole. The dominance is a residential building, to which other economic buildings, such as the hoarder and the kolna, are adjacent. The whole area is closed by a significant entrance gate, which serves as a gateway to the history of this place. The first impression of this place is a sense of stability and craftsmanship, which is clear from how the buildings are located and how they relate.
Now let's stop a little bit at how this area came into being and at what time we're at. This estate was built in the first half of the nineteenth century, approximately between a thousand eight hundred and a thousand eight hundred fifty. At that time, the development of a wall of folk architecture took place in this region. People began to replace older, more susceptible materials with firmer houses, suggesting the growing prosperity of farmland in the vicinity of Poděbrad. This complex was designed to serve as a full-fledged farmhouse where housing and management were combined under one roof. Although today we do not know the specific names of architects who drew these plans, it is clear that they were masters of their craft who understood the needs of rural life and the aesthetics of their times.
Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details that you can observe right in front of you. Note how cleverly this complex combines practical elements with those representative ones. While some parts use grafted structures that were common at the time for their functionality and thermal insulation, other parts are walled up, which provided a farm of importance and resistance. Please look carefully at the entrance gate, which is one of the most significant elements of the complex. If you focus on its details, you'll see planks folded in a ray that resembles the shape of a flame. It is a very delicate and courageous decorative element. In addition, you will find a stucco mirror, which is a decorative element from the plaster, which gives the gate elegance and shows that the owners of the farm were careful about the appearance of their home. Note also the roofs of buildings that are covered by overalls, which is a traditional material that gives the whole area a typical look of the old Czech countryside.
When we think about the people who lived here, we have to realize that this farmhouse was the center of the universe for the whole family and their helpers. Although the historical records today do not include specific personalities that are known worldwide, every stone and board here tells the story of hard work, a close connection with soil and family traditions that have been passed down here from generation to generation. Imagine a morning crowd of people at the gate, the noise from the shed, or the movement in the hoarder where the crops were stored that guaranteed survival in the winter months. This space was not just a set of buildings, but a living organism.
The interesting thing that may interest you is to change this place over time. While the main buildings were preserved, between the year 1,000 and the end of the century, the original bread gradually disappeared. It is a fascinating example of how agriculture has changed and how some parts of the farm have ceased to be needed while others have gained value. It is precisely because of its uniqueness and the fact that there is a pattern of masonry architecture, the entire complex was officially registered as a cultural monument in the year one thousand eight hundred eight-seven. That means the state has recognised its irreplaceable value for our history and culture. It's basically an open book of architecture that shows us what a typical farmhouse looked like in the nineteenth century.
When you look at these walls today, feel the atmosphere of peace and stability. This area survived two world wars, changes in regimes and technological revolutions that changed the face of the Czech countryside. Yet it still stands here and reminds us that the quality of craft and respect for materials can overcome time. It's a place where time has stopped and where we can quietly think about how much the way we live today has changed compared to the people who built their gates with flames over a hundred and seventy years ago.
We now invite you to view this area at your own pace. Take a walk around the house, look again at the details of the entrance gate and feel the texture of the walls and wood. Let yourself be absorbed by the history of this place and try to imagine what sound the car must have had to enter through this gate at a time when Kouty was the center of the farm. We hope that you are interested in this short journey into the past and that you have found in this area the beauty of simplicity and honest work. Thank you for spending a moment with us at this beautiful monument. We wish you a pleasant further journey and many other discoveries in our region. Goodbye.
