Vápenka in Supicovice, located in the district of Jeseník, is a historical monument from the 19th century, which represents an advanced type of construction with air ducts. This conical building, built from quarry stone and chamotte bricks, was built in 1856 by A. Dreschler for the extraction of quality marble, which became important building material during the industrial revolution. In 1973, the limestone was included in the list of real cultural monuments and still represents an important part of the local heritage.

The history of stone mining in Supicovice dates back to the 16th century, when four stone lambers and two limestone furnaces are mentioned. At that time, the stone was mainly burned to lime for construction purposes throughout Silesia. Only from the 19th century, especially the second half of it, began to benefit from quality marble as a building stone. This context has supported the development of mining activities in the region of Jeseník and has led to the construction of the Pipicovická shaft limestone furnace, which represents a more advanced design type.

The limestone architecture is characterised by its conical form and the use of quarry stone. The inside of the furnace is lined with a chamotte brick lining, which was typical of the effective burning of stone. The three arched openings lead to the area of the fire pit and the rolling arches provide additional structure stability. On the front of the furnace is a plate with the inscription "GOTT SEGNE UNSERE UNTERNEHMUNG 1856," which highlights the historical importance of the construction.

Vápenka was built by A. Dreschler and its operation lasted until 1908 when it disappeared. For centuries it served as an important element of local industry and became part of the cultural heritage of the Jeseník region. Today's construction is accessible to visitors who want to pick up the history of the industrial revolution and technological progress of the 19th century.

Visiting the lime kiln in Supicovice is an opportunity to explore not only architectural but also historical aspects of the industrial era in Bohemia. Its unique design and heritage from the 19th century represent a valuable contribution to understanding local history and technological innovations of the time.

Welcome to Zipicovice. You're standing right where the untamed force of nature meets incredible human ingenuity. Before your eyes, this strange, monumental structure stands out from the surrounding terrain and dominates the whole place. Perhaps at first glance you are surprised by its unusual, almost unnatural shape and how firmly and organically it fits into this environment, this place where a precious stone has been extracted for centuries. Feel the atmosphere of this place. You can feel the peace and quiet that is now ruling here, but at the same time, try to imagine the huge noise, dust and constant movement that existed here in the past. This building is not just a pile of stone and bricks. It's a living witness to a time when one tried to understand and control the raw materials of the country to create the foundations of the modern world.

Let us now go back in time together to understand why this building is standing here in the first place and how important it was for this region. To understand its existence, we have to look at the middle of the nineteenth century. It's a thousand eight hundred fifty-six. At that time, the world was going through a huge transformation. Industrial expansion was gaining strength, and people were looking for more efficient and advanced ways to exploit the wealth that the country offered them. It was this year that this limestone was built. Its purpose was not only to extract marble, but to use it as indispensable building material. This limestone was a key element for the processing of materials that were being conquered here in the local quarry. It was a place where the raw power of stone turned into a useful product, which subsequently served to build many important buildings. This construction was a symbol of the region's progress and economic strength at that time.

Now pay attention to the very form of this building. Look at her unique geometry. Notice how the whole structure narrows towards the top and creates this characteristic conical shape. It's not a coincidence or a purely aesthetic decision. This form has been designed with great care to meet strict technical requirements. This geometry had its practical reasons for the process of incineration and subsequent processing to be carried out as efficiently as possible and for the heat to remain where it was most needed. If you can get closer, notice the details that form the inner life of this furnace. The whole structure was embossed with special chamotte bricks. These bricks were selected to withstand the extreme temperatures created by the combustion process inside the furnace. Without this resistant layer, the whole building would not survive a short time. Another fascinating and at that time completely advanced element is the air ducts. These little passages were the heart of technology. They made it possible for the air to flow correctly within the structure, which was absolutely essential for maintaining a stable temperature and for the proper functioning of the whole process. It is a fascinating example of how the then builders managed to work with the laws of physics and how deep their understanding of technology was, all without modern computers and digital tools today.

Although the names of many workers who worked here every day were lost in the abyss of time, the figure of the man who designed this construction remained known to us. Architect A. Dreschler was the one who gave this limestone its face, its strength and its functionality. He was the visionary who was able to combine the practical need for marble mining and processing with the most modern technological methods of his time. Imagine the people who started their work here in a thousand eight hundred fifty-six. They had to learn to control these new, complex systems. Every day they fought with fire, stone and high temperatures to create a material that later served to flourish architecture throughout the area. This construction is therefore not only the work of the architect, but also the result of the efforts of many unknown hands that worked here.

You may now be interested in one interesting thing that gives this construction even more weight. You may be asking why this limestone is still standing here and why it is so carefully protected. It is because its importance exceeded the boundaries of a mere industrial object. This limestone was such an exceptional example of the advanced construction of its time that in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-three it became part of our common heritage. It was officially listed as a real-estate cultural landmark. It means that it's not just an old building in the quarry anymore, but it's a rare artifact of history that tells us the story of human progress, technical genius, and how the world changed over the centuries. Its conical form is now a symbol of the era when science and craft began to unite in something much larger.

Now that you know much more about what is standing right in front of you, I suggest you continue your next walk around this place. Take a look at the surrounding terrain of the quarry, perceive the silence that now rules here, and try to reimagine the enormous movement and energy that was here more than a hundred and seventy years ago. Every detail of this building has its meaning and every stone here has its story. Thank you for spending this moment with this historical monument and for your interest in her past. We wish you a beautiful journey and many other interesting discoveries in the next survey of this beautiful place. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: Vápenka offers a refreshing atmosphere in spring when nature wakes up from winter sleep. Flowers and trees are beginning to bloom, which adds colored paint to the landscape frame of the monument. The sun illuminates architectural details more slowly than in the summer, highlighting their beauty and history. It is recommended to visit early morning or late evening when fewer people and the temperature is pleasant. Put on light but protective clothes to be ready for changing weather.

Summer: The summer on Vapence offers the most sunny hours and warm lights, which emphasizes architecture significantly. Nature is at the peak of its beauty with dense green trees and flowering fields. This time of the season may be the most visited, therefore we recommend to come in early morning or late evening when there is a milder temperature and smaller crowd. Do not forget the protective sunglasses, short gloves and enough drinking connection.

Autumn: In the autumn period, Vápenka offers a charming atmosphere with colored tree leaves that add fine nuances to the landscape frame. The sunny days are short, which can be ideal for shooting architecture in a quieter atmosphere with long shadow formations. The temperature is usually pleasant, so you can afford free movements without warm clothes. We recommend visiting at noon when the sun is medium and illuminates the details of the monument.

Winter: During winter, Vápenka offers a quiet atmosphere with fewer visitors. Architectural elements are marked on the pale background of snow, which is ideal for taking photos. Short sunny days and cold temperatures require well-insulated clothing, including hat and gloves. This time of the year is suitable for those looking for a quieter experience with the possibility to enjoy the cool air after visiting the sights.
