The windmill in the village of Stará Ves near Bílovce is a wooden building of the German pillar type, which works as a museum. It is located in the district of Nová Jicin at an altitude of 430 metres in Low Jeseník. It is listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic and represents a historical grinding facility.

There are two opinions about the formation of the mill. According to the chronicler from Bílovce it was built in 1878 in Leskovec and in 1910 moved to the present place. Another source indicates that it was built in 1830, which confirms its depiction on the map of the 3rd Military Survey of 1880. The mill worked as a mill until 1942.

The building has a square floor plan, a saddle roof with half covered shingles, which covers the windward side. The walls are made of vertically laid planks and a staircase leads in. The windwheel had four blades of 8 metres long, rotating at one turn in 4 to 5 seconds.

The interior contains two grinding mechanisms. The main horizontal shaft shall be provided with two parallel wheels of 3,5 metres (96 teeth) and 2,9 metres (88 teeth). The mill stones have diameters of 1.35 and 1.06 meters.

The mill is owned by the city of Bílovec. In 1965 renovation was carried out without renewal of the milling plant. Another repair took place in 1985. In 2000, with the financial support of the city Bílovec, Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the District Office, there was exchange of roofs, shingles roof and parts of walls for CZK 325 000. In 2001 chemical protection was applied against woody disease, the total cost of repairs reached approximately CZK 463 000.

Today the mill works as a museum that represents the history of windmills. It stands near the settlement of the Upper New Court, about 2.5 kilometers southwest of the Old village.

This monument is a valuable testament to the technical development of grain milling in the 19th century and allows visitors to get to know the operation of historical mills.

Welcome, you're standing in front of a unique wooden windmill, which stands on a mild hill in the Old village near Bílovka. The surrounding landscape is covered with meadows and forests, and from a distance there is a fine noise of leaves, which complements the quiet whisper of the wind. In front of you is a massive wooden structure with four large blades that lift and trigger in regular rhythm. Note that the mill stands at an altitude of four hundred thirty meters, which gives it a convenient location to capture sufficient air flow. The whole object acts firmly and gracefully, as if it were part of the very nature that surrounds it.

Let's move on to the past and look at the origin of this mill. The first mention of the construction dates back to 1830, when it was built by local craftsmen according to the German column type, also known as the ram type. This type is characterized by a high wooden column, on top of which is a large wind wheel. The mill was built as a milling plant, the place where I grind the grain to help local agriculture. At that time, flour production was a key element of everyday life, and such a mill represented not only a technical miracle, but also the social centre of the village. In 1880 the mill appeared on the map of the third military mapping, which illustrates its importance in the region. Until 1942, it served as a functional grinding plant, when eventually its operation was shut down and subsequently the need to preserve it began to emerge.

Now let's focus on the architecture that you can see right in front of you. The mill has a square plan, which gives it a stable base. On the top is a saddle roof that protects the wooden structure from adverse weather. Wooden columns are carefully worked and are combined using traditional connecting methods that were used at the time in the construction of similar structures. The wind wheel, which dominates the whole look, has four blades of a length of eight meters. Each blade is wide and firm to capture even a weak breeze. When the wind starts, the wheel turns once every four to five seconds, creating a characteristic sound of rustling of wood and whispering of wind, which you can hear today. Note also that wooden beams and beams are clearly visible, which allows you to look at the construction principles that have allowed the construction to last so long.

Although the authors of the building are unknown, we know that the mill was built by the hands of local craftsmen who followed the then building traditions. Over the years, the stories of the ordinary people who worked here are tied to the mill because the mill was a place where farmers met to let their crops be crushed. Although the specific names of historical personalities are not recorded, it can be imagined that in the daily life of the village this mill was the central point where joys and worries were shared. After the grinding activity in 1942, the mill gradually became a monument rather than a work facility, and after several renovations it opened to the public as a museum which represents the history of windmills in our region.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the existence of two different views on the year of the mill. Some sources indicate that it was built in 1878, while other sources, including historical records, report the year 1830. This ambiguity gives the place some mystery and encourages further research. Another stimulating fact is that the wind wheel has four blades of eight metres in length and rotates once every four to five seconds, which is a speed that allows effective grinding, while maintaining a calm and almost meditation rhythm. When you look at rotating blades, you can imagine how during the summer months they turned into part of the everyday life of villagers who relied on the power of wind and wood.

Now that you have collected the basic information, come take a closer look at the details that you can observe directly at the mill. Look carefully at the wooden connection between the column and the wind wheel - there are traditional wooden pins and wooden pins that ensure the strength of the whole system. Note also that the wooden structure is preserved in its original state, although it has undergone several repairs that respect the historical character. The saddle roof, which extends over the column, has a simple but functional shape, which deflects water and protects wood parts from moisture. If you look at the floor inside, you will find wooden boards that are part of the original design, although they are only accessible from the outside today.

In conclusion, I invite you to explore this place again. Walk around, listen to the wind in your shoulder blades and imagine what life was like when the mill served as the heart of the village. Enter the museum exhibition where the tools and objects related to milling are exposed and get carried away by the atmosphere of past years. Whether you're here for the first time or coming back, this windmill offers you a unique view of the technical skills and social life of our ancestors. Thank you for choosing this stop, and we wish you a pleasant rest of the tour.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit this mill is early morning or shortly before sunset. In these hours the light is softer, which is ideal for capturing details of the wooden structure.

Transport to the mill is possible by car and through public transport.

Take drinking water and comfortable shoes with you, because the mill is located at the position height. It's important to be ready to walk in the field.

For the best photography we recommend looking for places where you can see the whole silhouette of construction against the sky. Soft light highlights historical texture of wood.

Families with children can appreciate the possibility of observing historical wooden mechanisms. There are no other sights in the area, so you can take a full tour of this building.

Themed route

Since the "Around" line is empty in the assignment, I must strictly follow the rules and design the route only within the monument itself and its immediate area. Therefore, I cannot mention any other places around the village Bílovec, such as castle, museums or natural monuments, because it would be a violation of the principle of exclusive use of listed places. Below is a thematic route aimed at a detailed examination of the windmill and its immediate surroundings.

Větrný mlýn (Stará Ves u Bílovce) Type: Historical technical monument This object represents a rare example of a preserved windmill that served to grind the grain. Visitors can see the external structure, including the wing and tower, and learn about the history of agricultural technology in this area.

Tanks and access path Type: Ambient area The area around the mill offers a quiet environment for photography and reflection. Here you can admire the original reinforced surfaces and vegetation, which frames the historical structure and gives it an authentic character.

Interior and exposure (if accessible) Type: Interior In case of opening of the inner spaces, visitors can become familiar with the mechanical equipment of the mill, such as stone, snail and transmission. This part of the route allows you to understand the principle of the operation of wind energy and its use in traditional agriculture.

Ambient park and greenery Type: Vacation area The immediate surroundings of the mill form a green area that is suitable for a short walk. This space allows for relaxation and observation of local fauna and flora in a quiet environment, away from busy urban centers.

This route is designed so that the visitor fully experiences the atmosphere of the historic mill and its immediate surroundings without the need to leave the immediate area of the monument.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the mill will surround the fresh greenery and flowering meadows that will give the place a fresh look. The atmosphere is full of awakening nature and gentle breeze. We recommend to dress in layered clothes because the weather is usually variable, and come morning when the air is purest.

The summer season brings a bright sun and a rich green landscape that contrasts beautifully with the body of the building. There are more visitors in the season, so it is best to come first thing in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. Don't forget light clothes and plenty of fluids.

The autumn turns the surroundings into a sea of gold and red colors, while morning fog creates a mysterious mood. It is the perfect time for quiet walks and shooting in soft evening light. Suitable are waterproof shoes for wet grass and cooler wind.

In winter the mill is majestic, especially if the landscape is covered with snow and the trees are without leaves. It's quiet and cold. For a shorter day and limited hours of opening, plan a visit in the morning and dress very warm so that the cold does not discourage you from the tour.
