Vila Josefa Bondyho in Žatci is a Neo-Renaissance town house from 1884, which served as the headquarters of the hop producer. The building is an important piece of evidence of the Žetek hop history and urban architecture at the end of the 19th century. Since 2006 it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The construction was built in the 1980s when Czech countries experienced the expansion of industrial business and urban construction. In the then European architecture, historism dominated, returning to Renaissance and Baroque elements. This trend was reflected in the design of the Žetek builder Franz Franta. The original residential house was expanded in 1893 by a perpendicular attached court tract designed to store hops.

Architecturally, the villa features a richly decorated street facade with a central triaxial risalite, a closed triangular tympanone. The ground floor of the house is broken by belt barefoot and windows are separated by canned pilasters. The smooth floor is decorated with karyatis and post-term moldings unloaded on the consoles. The main entrance in the right part of the house consists of two wing doors with decorative fillings. The storey yard tract covers the counter roof; his windows are mostly segmentally sealed and placed in the shells. The interior has preserved original construction structures, fragments of stucco decoration and remains of decorative painting.

The original owner was the producer of hops Josef Bondy. In the second half of the 20th century, the storage part of the building was used by the plant, while the older residential part was divided into four separate units. In the 21st century the house ceased to be used and in 2019 it was offered as a decrepit object for sale.

The most interesting elements are the original hop oven in the western part of the yard, preserved in the form of a sulphur chamber with grates. This technical monument directly refers to the hop tradition which was economically crucial to Žatec. While the western side facade is adjacent to a number of other houses, the east side remains freely visible and apart from a single small window in the attic is completely undivided.

Vila Josefa Bondyho represents a valuable proof of the historical form of the city and its close connection with the hop industry. Although the current state of the building is marked by decadence, its architectural details and preserved technical background of the oven remain an important testimony about life and business in Žatec at the end of the 19th century. Visiting the historical center of Žatce offers a unique opportunity to recognize this building in the context of the region's wider hop heritage.

Welcome to Žatci, a city with rich history and beautiful architectural monuments. You are standing in front of one of the most interesting buildings in this area - Josef Bondy's villa, which is an excellent example of neo-Renaissance architecture. Look up at the front of the house and you will see a rich decoration with risalite and karyatides on the floor, giving you an idea of the artistic taste of the time.

This villa was established in 1884 as a residence for Josef Bondy, a local hop producer. Plans for building the house were drawn up before construction and the whole arrangement was designed to meet the needs of the then economic life. In 1893, the building was then expanded by a storage tract for hops, which is proof of the significant role this product had in the economy of that time.

Architect Franz Franta left his trail here. Notice his artistic approach to the decoration of the facade, which is full of details and tells of the wealth of the time. The architecture of the house is characterized by a harmonious connection of the residential part with the economic tract, which is typical of such construction projects.

Josef Bondy was a key figure not only in the history of this villa, but also in the company Žatce. His work with hops affected the local economy and contributed to the development of this industry in the region.

The interesting thing is that since 2006 this villa has been registered as a cultural monument. This underlines its historical and architectural value, although the object has been struggling with decrepit problems in recent years. In 2019 it was even offered for sale, which opens up interesting questions about its future.

Let's move closer and look at the original structure. Despite the decay of building elements, it is possible to feel the spirit of past times when this villa was a living part of the local community.

Let us now explore the surroundings and see how this historical object is integrated into the modern city. Whether the villa is in a decrepit state today, its history and architecture are worth exploring.

Thank you for your visit to this beautiful monument. I hope this guide inspired you to further discover and appreciate the historical wealth of the Žatka.

Tips for visitors

To visit Josef Bondy's villa in Žatci I recommend to choose a sunny morning, when the light highlights the neo-Renaissance details of the facade. Due to the poor condition of the building, the tour is possible only from the outside, so plan your time so that you can explore the adjacent economic tract in peace. You can easily reach Žatka by car or public transport, check the current connection in the traffic search engine. Parking is possible in the adjacent streets of the historical centre. Remember to take a high-quality camera, the best pictures will be taken from the opposite pavement, where the overall architecture of the villa will stand out. For families with children, a walk through the historical centre is ideal, as the city offers many attractions associated with the hop tradition that will impress the children with its uniqueness. In the vicinity of the villa do not miss a tour of the entire historical center Žatce, which is famous for its rich hop history and unique monuments associated with the cultivation and processing of this crop.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the garden around the house wakes up and the light is very fine. The air smells fresh, but due to the poor condition of the building, the soil around it can be very wet. I suggest you come early in the morning to enjoy your peace and avoid any rain. Dress in layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be low.

In the summer months the surrounding area is full of thick green and strong sun illuminates every crack in the facade. The atmosphere is alive, but high temperatures can be tiring. It is best to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and possible groups of people. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of fluids.

Autumn brings golden colors and morning fog, which gives the construction a melancholy look. The light is low, which beautifully highlights the details of the decaying architecture. Due to uneven and often muddy terrain, wear tight shoes. An ideal visit in the afternoon is when the sun shines best.

The winter makes the villa very lonely between naked trees. The sky is often gray and the air is freezing, which increases the feeling of abandonment. It is necessary to wear a very warm jacket and quality shoes for walking on slippery or uneven surfaces. Due to the short day, plan to visit around noon.
