Vila se sušárnou a skladem chmele Gustava Epsteina a Adolfa Mendla is a cultural monument located in Žatec, specifically on Kovárská street under the numbers described 1257 and 753. This area includes a representative villa, a garden pavilion and a storage area with a hop oven. The area was designed by architects Wilhelm Fuchs and Hildebert Kolb and built for the business company Epstein, Mendl & Grube in 1913. Since 2021, the whole complex has been registered as a cultural monument.

The area was designed at the beginning of the 20th century when intensive industrial development and modernisation took place in Central Europe. New architectural styles, such as Art Nouveau, appeared in the Czech Republic, which also affected this building. Architects have designed a complex with emphasis on connecting a representative villa with production and storage facilities. In the 1950s, hop and elevator presses were built in the warehouse.

The architecture of the complex is characteristic of the Art Nouveau, which is particularly evident on the facade with lisen vertical frames. Warehouse and Drying Room No. 753 are a walled four storey building with a mansard roof, where there are two other floors. The facade is divided by the lisen vertical frames, in which are hidden pillars that strengthen the perimeter walls. It has prism continuous interwindow pillars and profiled ledge above the fourth floor and under the Mansard roof. The main ridge of the Mansard roof is perpendicular to the street facade, while the shield risalts have a valb roof. The windows of the main facade correspond to the industrial character and are divided into individual tables. In the southeast facade there is an extension of the raw chambers and communication space, while in the eastern part there is a factory chimney for the sizing and drying of hops. There are remains of fuel and hazelnuts in the sulphurising chamber, and there are preserved hop presses from 1964.

From 1912, Epstein, Mendl & Grube was the owner of the complex until its cancellation in 1938. After February's events 1948, the premises served the national enterprise's hop shop. Since 2000 the warehouse has been property of CHALLARY, the team Žatec and the villa is privately owned.

The area has several attractions, such as hop presses from 1964 in the warehouse or a symmetrical double take-up with laminated doors attached to the gate of the complex. Vila se sušárnou a skladem chmele Gustava Epsteina a Adolfa Mendla is today a cultural monument worth visiting for its historical significance and architectural rendition. The area is an interesting example of the connection of representative housing with industrial activity in the early 20th century and is an important part of the Zátek hops Region.

Welcome to the beautiful city of Žatec, a place where history mingles with the scent of hops and traditions that go deep into the past. Right now, standing in front of this historic monument, you have a unique opportunity to see the world that has been made up of success, work and great ambitions. In front of your eyes, there is a unique complex that is not just a simple set of buildings, but a complete story about the connection of private life and big business. Look at the representative villa that dominates the whole place with its presence and gives the impression of stability and grandeur. Note how the garden pavilion is present in the area, which gives the whole place a quieter and relaxing character, as if it were intended for moments of calm in the middle of the working day. And right next to them, as a necessary and practical part of this whole, there's a warehouse with a hops oven. This view, which you are experiencing right now, immediately transmits you to the beginning of the twentieth century, when Žatec profiled itself as the world center of its most valuable product.

Let us now return together to the year one thousand nine hundred and thirteen. This was a crucial year when the construction of this important site began to take place. At that time Žatec was in full bloom and hops were the most important pillar of the local economy and the whole region. This complex was not only built for aesthetic purposes, but was very carefully designed for the specific needs of the business firm Epstein, Mendl and Grube. At that time, this company was a major market player and needed a place to prove its strength, its wealth and its stability. The villa served as a representative residence, a place where important trade agreements were decided and important traders from all over the world hosted. The warehouse and the drying room then formed the real heart of the business, the place where the most valuable fruit of this region was processed and where it was prepared for further travel in the area.

Now pay attention to the architects who were behind this whole proposal and implementation. It was Wilhelm Fuchs and Hildebert Kolbe. Their task was to create a harmonious and functional whole, where the elegance of the residential house would be irrevocably combined with the practical requirements of industrial operations. Looking at the buildings you're seeing right now, you can feel the effort for perfect balance. The architecture of this place was designed to reflect the high status of the company and its owners. Note how the individual parts of the complex complement each other and communicate with each other. The villa, the garden pavilion and the warehouse are not only isolated objects, but they form one coherent and sophisticated whole, which was designed with regard to every need for life and business at the time. The architects were able to create space that was also home and a modern workplace.

If you look at the warehouse and the oven now, try to imagine what it was like decades ago. Hops required constant and very careful care and above all the right conditions for drying to maintain its unmistakable quality. The oven was an absolutely key element that allowed hops to prepare for the next trade and ensure its long shelf life. Even though the world was constantly changing around, this place had to adapt to new times and new technologies. In the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-four there was a very significant modernization, when new hop processing lines were installed in the warehouse. This shows us how this area remained a living and functional place even in much later years, far after it was first built. This ability to adapt to more modern methods of work was proof of the constant life of this place.

You may now wonder how this area has managed to remain in such good condition until today. The answer lies in its incredible historical and cultural value. Since the year two thousand twenty-one, the entire area has been registered as a cultural monument. This is very important because it means that its importance for the history and culture of our region is officially recognised and protected for future generations. It's not just a group of buildings, it's a living testimony of an era that shaped the identity of the Žatka. Although the names of the individual individuals who lived in these premises may have been lost in some historical records, their legacy and their visions are still very strongly present in every stone and in every line of the site.

The interesting thing that may interest you in your search is the infirmity of this place. While the world was constantly changing around, new technologies, new political systems and new ways of life were coming, this area maintained its fundamental nature and structure. The original intention, namely to combine representative and luxurious housing with practical and necessary processing of hops, remained in the architecture itself and layout of the space. It is a rare and beautiful example of how industrial history and architecture can connect into one harmonious entity, which today teaches us about the past and how people have built their success in the past.

But now I will not hold you at this point any longer. I'll ask you to take another tour and continue to discover this place. Explore the whole area, perceive the atmosphere that still hangs there, and let yourself be carried away by your own imagination. Maybe by looking at the villa or looking at the warehouse, you'll see some small details that you missed as part of this recording. Every corner of this compound has its own story waiting to be discovered. Thank you for spending this moment with us and paying attention to this historical monument in Žatec. I wish you a very beautiful journey and many other interesting experiences in the further discovery of our historical treasures. Goodbye.

Sun rays illuminate the architecture of the villa, while temperatures are pleasant for walking on the outside. Visitors should be prepared for sudden weather and wear clothes in layers. The best time is this afternoon, when they avoid crowds.
