The water mill in Boaryn is located on the northwest edge of the same-name village in the Hradec Králové district and represents a preserved example of baroque water mill architecture from the 18th century. Protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 2003, it is part of an area with grafted mill building, grain and chicory drying plants and a spacious courtyard. Its importance lies in a well-preserved building complex that combines traditional grafted structures with local sandstone walled elements, reflecting the development of the agricultural industry in the region.

The first written mention of the mill dates back to 1569, when the mill drive had already turned away from the Bystřice river and served to drive the mill machine. A significant reconstruction took place in the 19th century: in 1874, the older mill was converted into a cylindrical mill for the peasant cooperative. The buildings therefore began to specialize in silencing the grain and drying the chicory, while the mill building remained mainly grafted, but on the side of the drive it was built from local sandstone blocks. Crop and chicory drying plants were built as two storey buildings, which are still part of the complex.

Architecturally, the mill is represented mainly by a grafted storey building with dimensions 9,5 x 22,5 meters. On the side facing the mill wheel, the building is decorated with sandstone blocks, which distinguishes its construction from typical grafting. The mill building is finished with a formatted superstructure covered by a saddle roof with an eternite cover. At present the condition of the mill is in critical condition: on the ground floor there is rotten grafting, fallen plaster and damaged roof cover, while the crov is inaccessible. Only the drying rooms had been repaired in 2023 and got a new roof and crows. This situation reflects the long-term lack of funding to maintain the monument, making it difficult to maintain it.

The area of the mill in Bobojni is protected as a cultural monument under the register number SAR 100041. There is a river Bystřice and neighbouring village Kunčice, which are part of the region Hradec Králové. The natural landscape with forests and fields is situated nearby, giving the mill a historical context in an agricultural-oriented environment. In the 16th century, when the mill was mentioned for the first time, the processes associated with the reform and confessional disputes that affected the development of agriculture and the use of water resources took place in the Czech Republic. The Baroque style was developed in the 18th century, which was reflected in the reconstruction of the mill complex.

At present, the mill in Boharyn is one of the most vulnerable cultural monuments of the Royal Hradec Region. The lack of funding makes it difficult to repair and maintain, although the drying plants were successfully reconstructed in 2023. For visitors, the object is accessible, but in the current state it is not fully functional. The mill is an interesting example of the history of the agricultural industry and architecture that should be preserved for future generations. His visit offers an opportunity to learn the history of the region and a demonstration of how tradition met modern technologies.

Welcome to the water mill in Boaryn! You stand before one of the oldest preserved mills in our territory, which can tell you about centuries of work, water and human effort. In front of you is a grafted 18th-century building, which is still on its foundations for centuries - as a witness to the past that cannot be ignored.

Let's see what you see right now. In front of you stands the main mill building, which is mainly made of wood - a typical grafted building where each tribe is carefully embedded in the other, as if holding each other's hand. On the side that looks to the drive, however, the material changes: here you can see the masonry made of sandstone blocks that supply the building with a fortress and at the same time distinguish it from the surrounding wood. Notice how light is reflected from smooth surfaces of stones - this is proof that this part was built for endurance.

Behind the mill is a spacious yard, which was once the living heart of work. There are two wall drying rooms - one for grain, the other for chicory. These buildings, built from stone, are like the tower guards of the past. Their walls are strong and spacious so that they can store the heat and moisture needed for drying crops. Notice how their roofs are tilted - this is typical of drying rooms so that the rain cannot disturb the drying process.

Now pay attention to what's going on behind the mill. Look at the drive that turns away from the Bystřice River. This drive was once a life-giving windmill - the water was powered by mill wheels and machinery. Without it, the mill could not function, and therefore it was built right here, where the water flow is stable and strong enough. Water was not only a source of energy, but also a symbol of work and livelihood for the whole community.

Let's go back to the past now. The first written mention of this mill dates back to 1569, when it was already connected to the river Bystřice. That means the mill has stood here for more than 400 years! At that time, it was driven by a water wheel which rotated with the power of the current. The grain was ground here, flour was made and people from around here came here for basic needs. The mill was not only a workplace, but also a meeting place - there was a decision about life, about livelihood, about the future.

In the nineteenth century, the mill changed. It was converted into a machine mill, which means that steam or mechanical machines started working here instead of old water wheels. This enabled the processing of grain faster and more efficiently, but also brought new technology to this old building. At the same time, chicory - a plant used to produce medicinal products - started drying here. The mill did not only grind the grain, but it also became an important place to produce other products.

In 2003 the mill was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This means that he was recognised as a place of importance for the history and culture of our nation. Since then, he's been looking after him to preserve his original form and to tell other generations about the past. The last repairs to the drying plants took place in 2023 - roofs and roofs were restored so that the mill could become a full-fledged place that can fascinate visitors.

Now look around you and perceive the atmosphere of this place. You are standing in the village Boharyně, which lies on the northwest edge of the same-name residence in Hradec Králové district. This site is not random - it was selected for its strategic location by the river, which enabled easy access to water and at the same time to commercial routes. Boharyně was once a place where people met, worked and lived. The mill was their important partner, providing them with basic needs.

The interesting thing is that this mill is an example of how technologies and traditions can come together. While water and wood are materials that have been used since time immemorial, machinery technology of the nineteenth century has brought a new dimension to work. The mill is not only an old building, but also a place where the different ages meet - from manual labor to industrial revolution.

There's a place in front of you full of stories. Stories about the people who worked here, the water that powered the mill wheels, the grain that was ground here, and the chicory that was drying here. It's a place that tells us about our roots, how we lived and how we evolved.

If you like this mill and want to learn more about history, about the technique that worked here, or about the people who worked here, I suggest you stay in Boharyn for a while. Walk the surrounding roads, visit other places that can tell you their stories. Boharyně and its mill are just one of many places that can show you how rich and interesting our history is.

Thank you for stopping by this place. The mill in Boaryn wished you to take away not only knowledge, but also a sense of respect for what we have built in the past. May you continue to travel our country!

Tips for visitors

The water mill in Boboyni is the most attractive when visiting from May to September, when the weather is pleasant and nature is blooming around. It is calmer in winter, but light is less favourable to photography. We recommend visiting in the morning when light is softer and visitors are less numerous.

The location is available by car from the vicinity of Hradec Králové. It is recommended to use public transport, such as buses connecting Hradec Králové to Kunčice. Transport is simple, but check the current routes and connections in advance.

Bring suitable clothes for weather changes for your visit. We also recommend a small object for odour (e.g. towel or scarves), because there are forests and fields in the surrounding area where insects can occur. It is useful for photography to have a light gauge or a photographic apparatus with a good zoom, because the light in the mill building can be shady.

The best places for photography are mill buildings with formatted superstructure and windows that are lit by natural light. It is recommended to photograph in the morning or afternoon hours when the light is softer. Also interesting are the surrounding forests and fields where typical landscape elements of the region occur. Avoid shooting in strong sun to avoid strong shadows.

It is possible to visit the natural landscape with forests and fields offering beautiful views around the water mill in Boboaryn. It is also appropriate to visit local forests where there are different species of plants and animals typical of the region.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring The Boaryan water mill offers a unique atmosphere in spring months, when nature wakes up after winter peace. The area of the mill wakes up from an icy sleep, the stream starts to fill up the water and the primordial blooms are blooming around. The light is softer, the sun is reflected from wet grass and the shadows are longer, which creates a lovely lighting. The air is fresh but still cold, often with sudden changes in weather. It is ideal for visiting when you avoid rainy days because the roads to the mill can be muddy. I recommend visiting the mill early in the morning, when the least people are here, and taking with you light, waterproof shoes. Hot clothes with layers are necessary because spring weather is unpredictable - from sunny heat to heavy rain.

Summer In the summer months, the mill becomes a popular tourist attraction and therefore more visitors should be expected. The sun shines intensively here, creating clear contrasts between the shady places near the water and the illuminated facades of the mill. Nature is lush, the stream is full of water and green meadows spread around. The atmosphere is lively, there are often short-term events or sales stands with local specialities. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the heat is less demanding and the crowds disperse. I recommend light, airy clothes, hat or sunglasses and plenty of water. If you are going to stay longer, bring a light blanket to sit by the water.

Autumn Autumn visit to the mill offers a unique atmosphere where nature turns into yellow, orange and red. The leaves on the trees around the mill change colour and fall to the ground, creating beautiful autumn scenery. The light is softer, the sun no longer seems so intense, but the daylight is still sufficient for walking. The air is colder, often with a mild wind that blows the fallen leaves. It is ideal for visiting days when it does not rain because wet roads can be slippery. I recommend warmer clothes, but still light layers because temperatures can change quickly. It is also appropriate to wear fixed shoes because autumn paths can be uneven.

Winter Winter visit to the mill is quiet and mysterious, when nature covers itself with white snow. The surrounding area of the mill is covered with ice and snow, which creates beautiful winter scenery. The light is dimming, the sun appears only briefly and creates long shadows. The atmosphere is calm and quiet, without crowds of tourists. It is best for a visit when there is enough snow to create ice formations by the creek. I recommend warm clothes, including warm gloves and hats, because temperatures are usually low. The best time to visit is early afternoon, when the light is still sufficient, but the crowds are already scattered. If you decide to visit the mill in winter, don't forget the fixed shoes, because the roads can be covered with ice.
