Žampach is situated on a wooded design in the same-name village of Ústí nad Orlicí district, about six kilometres southwest of Žamberk. It is a ruins of a castle built in the early 14th century, which is protected by the state as a cultural monument.

The castle was built during the intense colonization of the sparsely populated border forest of eastern Bohemia, which was carried out by members of the noble family "from Zebín" during the time of the last Přemyslovovci. This territory belonged to Czechoslovak royal property. The first indirect mention of the castle appears in 1309 in connection with the name Petra "de Santbach" as the owner of the castle. In 1312, the owner is reminded of Křesislav ze Žampachu.

The castle changed owners in the following century. Before 1324, Jan Lucemburský owned it and pawned it to Henry of Lipé. In the property of the Lords of Lipé, the castle is still mentioned in 1340 and 1346. A fundamental change was brought about by Jan from Smojno, called "Armour," who became the owner after 1346 and built a base from the castle for robbery trips around the area.

These activities were put to an end by the criminal expedition of the Czech king Charles IV, who besieged and conquered the castle, had Jan Pancír executed and the estate submitted to his own administration. The timing of these events is between the autumn of 1355 and spring of 1356. This dramatic chapter later became the subject of folk legends.

In 1357 he donated Karel IV. Manor Žampach to Čeňek from Potštejn as a replacement for Potštejn Castle, which confiscated his father. The Czech successors were his sons John and Nicholas. In particular Mikuláš Žampach from Potštejn († 1427) opted towards Hussite teaching and in 1415 he co-sealed the prosecuting list of Czech and Moravian nobles against the burning of Jan Hus. For this jurisdiction, the manor of 1421 was plundered by Silesian Catholic troops.

In the 15th century the owner was regularly changed by means of pledges and arrivals of various noble families. From 1513 to 1539, the castle was pawned by a number of owners who did not occupy it, so it was decaying during these decades. In 1539 Zdeněk Žampach from Potštejn paid him out of the pledge and tried to restore the estate.

The chapel, the first mentioned in 1540, stood in the forefront. In the 16th and 17th centuries it served as a family tomb of the House of Bukovsky from Husttiřany, in 1672 the Jesuits rebuilt it and dedicated it to the Holy Cross. It disappeared after 1787.

In the first half of the 16th century there was a cash-cassette shop in the castle. In 1542, suspected men were detained, who during the interrogation described the production and distribution of fake coins. Workers, including Jampashan blacksmith John, were sentenced to death by burning. The workshop probably worked with the knowledge of the local authorities until the payment of the castle from the collateral in 1539.

The castle Žampach thus witnessed medieval conditions in the Czech Republic - from scientific administration to chivalrous passions to economic decline and criminal acts of royal power.

Žampach is a castle ruin on a forested hill of the same name, about six kilometres southwest of Žamberka in the Ústí nad Orlicí district. It is protected as a cultural monument.

The castle was founded during the reign of the last Přemyslids, when the sparsely inhabited border wilderness of eastern Bohemia, which was then royal property, began to be settled. The right bank of the Tichá Orlice was colonized by a family from Žebín, who had a hunting horn in their coat of arms. The first indirect mention of the castle dates from 1309. In 1312, Křesislav of Žampach is recorded as its owner. Later the castle belonged to John of Luxembourg, who pawned it in 1324 to Heinrich of Lipá.

After 1346 the castle was acquired by the knight Jan of Smojna, called Pancíř, and he turned it into a refuge for marauding expeditions in the surrounding area. Only King Charles the Fourth managed to stop him. The king laid siege to the castle, conquered it, and had Pancíř executed. This happened most likely in the autumn of 1355 or in 1356. Pancíř's robberies and his fate became the subject of several folk legends. In 1357 Charles granted the lordship to Čeněk of Potštejn as compensation for the confiscated Potštejn.

Čeněk's son Mikuláš Žampach of Potštejn embraced the teachings of Jan Hus and in 1415 co-sealed a letter of grievance from the nobility against his execution. In retaliation, Silesian Catholic forces ravaged the lordship in 1421. In 1425 Jan Městecký of Opočna took control of Žampach. When he then sided with King Sigismund, the Hussites with the help of part of the garrison conquered the castle in 1429 and handed it over to Mikuláš's son Jan.

Due to financial difficulties the family pawned the lordship repeatedly, and by 1513 the entire estate was pawned. Successive pledge holders did not reside at the castle and it fell into decay. Only in 1539 did Zdeněk Žampach of Potštejn redeem the pledge and reunify the lordship. He estimated the damage at four thousand groschen.

During the time when the castle was held by the lords of Pernštejn, a counterfeiting operation was active there. The Žampach blacksmith Jan produced false coins in it, apparently with the knowledge of the lords' officials. In June 1542 two suspicious men were arrested and during interrogation under torture they described the workshop. The blacksmith and two of his associates were sentenced to be burned at the stake.

A chapel stood in the castle's outer ward, documented in 1540. It served as a burial place for the Bukovský family from Hustířan. In 1672 the Jesuits rebuilt it and dedicated it to the Holy Cross. It ceased to exist after 1787.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit in late afternoon, when the sun creates interesting shadows on the ruins and underlines the historical character of the stones. Ideal are spring or autumn months when the weather is more stable and the views from the top are the cleanest.

Traffic to the monument is possible by car and public transport; The current connection and parking possibilities in the village Žampach please check the traffic search engines. Due to the position on the top we recommend shoes suitable for walking in uneven terrain.

Take plenty of drinking water and, if necessary, a snack in the way, because there is no refreshment facilities at the ruins. Families with children should assume that the terrain is rocky, which requires increased attention when moving between the ruins of the castle.

For photography are the most suitable places on the edge of the roof, from where you can capture the entire silhouette of the castle against the sky. The best light for landscape images can be obtained during the golden watch just before sunset.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings fresh energy and fine light to the surroundings of the ruins of Žampach, which beautifully highlights the texture of old stone remains. Nature begins with flowering around the castle, creating a pleasant environment for walking in the fresh air. Due to weather variability, we recommend choosing layered clothes that allow you to react easily to sudden temperature changes. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest and the movement of people is still minimal.

During the summer the atmosphere around the monument is lively and full of sun, while dense green vegetation provides a pleasant shade. The days are long, allowing for longer discovery of the surroundings in warm weather. To avoid the greatest heat and the largest crowds, visitors should arrive early in the morning. Remember the high-quality headgear, light clothing and enough drinking water to ensure comfort.

Autumn turns Žampach into a place full of melancholy and golden shades. The colourful leaves and the occasional morning mist in the valley provide the ruin with a mysterious and romantic touch. Due to the wet ground, it is necessary to have fixed and waterproof footwear. For the best visual experience of the colorful landscape we recommend planning a visit in the afternoon when the sun shines at a lower angle and the colors most excel.

Zimą makes the ruin very lonely and monumental, especially when the landscape is covered with snow. Without leaves on trees, the very shapes of the remains of the castle are better visible, which offers a different view of its architecture than at other times. Due to low temperatures and a shorter day, it is necessary to carefully aim for warm layers and have fixed footwear in case of slippery roads. It is the most peaceful period where you can enjoy the place in almost complete privacy.
